3 Planning, Development and Implementation Robert W. Johnson Southern Rural Health Access Program Pilot Area Funding provided a pilot recruitment program in underserved parishes in Southwest Louisiana Realized success of recruiting 4 physicians in the pilot area Led to the development of a state-wide non-profit recruitment program North Carolina Office of Rural Health Since its inception in 1973, their Medical Placement Services staff has recruited over 2000 primary care physicians, dentists & mid-levels. More than 50% of their placements were sites located in federally designated Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs) Recruitment Service is Free to eligible entities Provided Med Job Louisiana technical support

4 Act 162 of the 2002 Extraordinary Session Directed the Department of Health and Hospitals to: Increase the supply of primary care providers in underserved areas Develop and implement a strategic plan for the purpose of maintaining, enhancing, and expanding local health care services in the target areas Administer grant funds to qualified grantees to increase access to primary and preventive health care services 2004 Governor s Health Summit Identified the following Rural Health Issues: Health care provider shortages Increase access to primary and preventive healthcare services

5 AN OVERVIEW A non-profit recruitment and retention program designed to assist rural communities located in Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs) attract qualified health professionals A collaboration of the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals Bureau of Primary Care and Rural Health, the Louisiana AHECs, and local communities Serves as a referral source to the State Loan Repayment Program, the J-1 Visa Waiver Program, the Rural Loan Fund, and Rural Preceptor Programs offered by each of the AHECs
