3 Michigan Physician Profile Shortage of 5000 physicians in Michigan by % of Michigan s physicians plan to retire in next 10 yrs. 47% are 55 years of age or older. 45.5% completed a residency program in Michigan. If both UME and GME are in Michigan 66% stay in state. 34% of Active Physicians are Primary Care FP, IM, Peds 28% of Active Physicians are International Medical Graduates.

5 U. S. Physician Workforce 64,000 - Projected shortage of Physicians in US in PCP by 2025 Projected national shortage of 200,000 physicians by ,304 Physicians in the U. S. 25% of the national physician workforce is age 60 or older.

6 Demand 700 plus open physician jobs in Michigan today. Some Employers are in a recruitment holding pattern waiting for an economic turnaround. The recession has affected physician relocation creating a pent up demand for a career move. 46% of CEOs said access to care in their service areas has been compromised by a shortage of physicians. Obstetrics, Emergency Medicine, General Surgery, Psychiatry. Anticipate 300, ,000 new Michigan Medicaid patients in 2014 who will see them?

7 Distribution HPSAs - designated as having a shortage of primary medical care, dental or mental health providers. Urban or Rural areas, population groups or medical facilities. 224 Total HPSA Designations in Michigan. 10 whole counties, 19 service areas, 54 population groups, 141 facilities. Mal-distribution is not just in rural communities. 22% of all recruitment takes over 12 months to fill.* 35% of physician recruitment searches remain unfilled.* * MGMA/ASPR Recruiter Benchmarking Survey 2009

9 Demand, Distribution and Migration 50% of all physicians leave their first practice within 3 years % leave due to practice culture % leave due to compensation % leave due to family reasons. According to the American Hospital Association 65% of Hospitals are attempting to increase the number of employed Physicians. 80% are increasing the number of employed Primary Care physicians.

10 Opportunities Create community based efforts to promote local opportunities to candidates during their training. Shift more training of medical students and residents to community, rural and underserved settings.

13 National Health Service Corps Michigan is 4 th in the nation with over 161 participants. The loan repayment program $60,000 for two years of service and up to $170,000 for five years. Part-time clinicians working at least 20 hours a week can receive $30,000 for a two-year contract or up to $60,000 for four years. Allows awardees to count as many as 20 hours per week of health center teaching time toward their weekly commitments. Michigan State Loan Repayment Program Money paid directly to the clinician in practice up to $35,000 per year with a max of 4 yrs. 50% local funds 50% Federal funds Two years of service in a HPSA designated location.
