2 Lorenzo Manes Photographer Ravenna is a beautiful city renowned worldwide from an artistic and hystoric point of view. Last capital of the Roman Empire before the barbarian invasions, Ravenna treasures extraordinary monuments and mosaics that are Unesco World Eritage Sites San Vitale, Galla Placidia, Sant Apollinare in Classe only to mention the most famous. The territory is also very rich and unique as far as the environment is concerned. The municipalities of Ravenna and Cervia belong to the Emilia Romagna part of the Po River Delta Park, the biggest park in the region and one of the biggest ecosystems in Italy with more than three hundred bird species. Inside the Park the piallasse (marshes) situated in the inland of Marina Romea, are an uncontaminated stretch of water that can be explored by taking a relaxing electric boat cruise. One of the little islands that rise from this small lagoon the Spinaroni Island was a secure refuge for the partisans that freed Ravenna from the Nazi-Fascists and has

Just a few kilometers away, past the Guiccioli farm in Mandriole, the place where Garibaldi s wife Anita died, we find ourselves in the southern part of the Comacchio valley: here the Boscoforte peninsula welcomes visitors with its many walking paths on a narrow land line from which many different birds can be observed. Top of the list are the wonderful flamingos: watching them take flight is an unforgettable experience. Further south, the ancient pine forest of Classe (the place where Dante wrote the Paradise) is today a wondeful oasis that can be enjoyed peacefully in many ways, from bicycle to canoe, while the salterns in Cervia which date back to the Etruscan age combine a unique natural environment with the opportunity of watching the old art of the salinari (salt harvesters) and their thousand-year hold legacy.
