1 College of DuPage Spring 2016 Application for Center of Excellence at College of DuPage The Center of Excellence designation is determined by a set of direct and indirect measures that identify the applicant as being a top-rated College of DuPage discipline or program. As a Center of Excellence, the program stands out among other College of DuPage academic entities as well as among other national programs. The application process is meant to be rigorous. A selection of a discipline or program as a Center of Excellence is not mandatory for each review cycle. This application is a summary of the measures a discipline or program must meet in order to be considered a Center of Excellence at College of DuPage. There are direct measures and indirect measures. The applicant will need to have met five of the seven direct measures and five of the seven indirect measures at the meets or exceeds level of achievement. If a program or discipline is selected by the President as a Center of Excellence, the designation will be for a three-year cycle. The discipline or program must submit a self-assessment to the President at the end of years one and two validating that the program or discipline continues to meet the criterion as a Center of Excellence. At the end of year three, the discipline or program must submit a new application to the Application Review Committee for consideration to continue the designation as a Center of Excellence. The discipline/program will receive the following categories of recognition and awards as a Center of Excellence: A. Monetary award of $50,000 each year for three years to be used within each fiscal year for the following, or some combination of the following: 1. Purchase of equipment 2. Facility improvement 3. Grant match 4. Consultant fees 5. Conference fees or professional development 6. Another use defined by the discipline/program, subject to President or his/her designee s approval B. The discipline or program will receive the following Institutional communications: 1. Public recognition at annual College-wide events 2. Plaque for display in Board Room 3. Publicity in established College publications 4. Program or discipline specific advertising, marketing and signage

2 Process for Center of Excellence Application and Review by Committee The process leading to the designation of Center of Excellence is meant to be rigorous. Selection of a program or discipline for this recognition is not mandatory for each review cycle. The President appoints members for the Application Review Committee (ARC) for a two-year appointment. The Committee will make recommendations to the President for a program or discipline to be considered a Center of Excellence. 1. The Committee should be composed of: A. Three Academic Administrators with one representative from each academic discipline division. B. Three Faculty with one faculty from each academic discipline division i. At least one Career and Technical (CTE) Faculty ii. At least one Transfer Faculty 2. The Committee will review applications annually with an April application deadline date announced each year. The Committee will meet and make their recommendation to the President by the end of spring term each year. 3. If the Committee does not recommend a particular applicant to the President, the Committee will return the application to the appropriate program or discipline with recommendations for improvement. 3 Applicants must use the following list of direct and indirect measures for the outline of their application. Information cited for each measure needs to be outcomes oriented. Direct Measures For complete consideration, five of the seven direct measures must be met and enrollment growth, retention, and student success must be included in the five direct measures addressed in the application. All numerical College of DuPage data used for direct measures must be provided by the Office of Planning and Institutional Effectiveness unless otherwise noted. When responding to each measure, limit all historical details to the past five-to-seven academic years unless otherwise specified. Enrollment Growth The program or discipline has a minimum of 100 FTE students and has demonstrated annual enrollment growth over the past five years. (Use fall and spring semester FTE enrollments (by term 10th day) and include all instructional delivery modes generating enrollment.) Note: If appropriate, please explain if the program has enrollment capacity limits due to specialized accreditation requirements or the size of facility limits the student enrollment. Retention The within-term student retention in the discipline/program should be (1) sigma or 5 percent above the institutional within-term retention rate for the previous five-year period. Retention statistics shall not include comparisons to selected disciplines/programs within or across academic divisions. Describe specific strategies faculty use to retain students in the discipline/program. Grant Size The discipline/program can demonstrate significant and consistent generation of external support over a five-year period through grants, donations or other monetary awards (a total of $20,000 or more); or the discipline/program regularly contributes services of significant monetary value (a total of $20,000 or more for a five-year period) to the community through outreach efforts. In the description, identify which fundraising activities have included direct faculty involvement and/or the donations primarily resulted from the work of the COD Resource Development/Foundation office. Include and quantify donated equipment and software received by the discipline/program. For contributions to the community, explain what has been donated, its estimated monetary value, and how the donation has value for serving students in the discipline/program. Grant citations should include the time frame for the award, if the grant application has been funded or is pending, and the funding source. National Accreditation The discipline/program has received outside validation through the highest level of national accreditation available to the program. Academic Partnerships Provide an overview of the academic partnerships associated with this discipline/program including collaborative agreements with area high schools for dual credit and dual enrollment class offerings, hosting special competitive events on campus for high school or college students to compete in the discipline/program, articulation/transfer agreements with colleges and universities (e.g. 2+2 and 3+1), and other education/community outreach efforts directly related to the discipline/program. 4 Awards and Recognition The discipline/program has received awards from outside agencies, industry groups or organizations recognizing program excellence. The discipline/program is recognized regionally and/or nationally for workforce education or transfer discipline education. Faculty has received regional or national industry recognition, and/or recognition for scholarly work. Awards for academic excellence given to students and faculty in the discipline/program should be included such as students recognized for academic performance at a state, regional, and/or national competition. For all awards and recognition clearly state if it has been awarded to an individual, group, or to the program. Student Success The success rate (students completing courses with a passing letter grade) should fall above the current institutional average. Term data for fall and spring semesters will be used and dual credit, dual enrollment, independent study, special topics, and field study courses will be included. 5 Indirect Measures For complete consideration, the applicant must meet five out of seven indirect measures and Mission, Improvements from Student Learning Outcomes, and Curricula must be included in the five indirect measures addressed in the application. Other indirect evidence may be included in addition to the following measures. When responding to each measure, limit all historical details to the past five-to-seven academic years. Mission Briefly explain how the discipline/program exemplifies the mission of College of DuPage. (Go to to find the Mission Statement.) Improvements from Student Learning Outcomes The discipline/program can demonstrate program improvements resulting from the assessment of student learning outcomes for General Education and the Student Outcomes Assessment Projects (SOAPs) which are part of the Academic Program Review. Examples may include curriculum updates, new pedagogy, program design modifications, etc. Program Viability The program or discipline can demonstrate long-term viability through Chicagoland area, State of Illinois, Midwest regional, and U.S. government employment projections. Faculty Credentials Faculty credentials are exceptional: 75 percent of the program or discipline faculty hold a terminal degree, special licensure, or certification in their field; and evidence is provided that faculty engage in continuing education and professional development related to the discipline or program. In citing faculty credentials, include the definition of the terminal degree for this specific discipline/program. Provide only a summary list of faculty credentials not complete vitaes. In the list of faculty, identify those who are full- and part-time and those who only supervise clinical, practicum, and/or internship experiences. Curricula The discipline/program has a modern, up-to-date curricula using progressive teaching methodology. This section may also include how curricula in the discipline/program are delivered. Examples may include delivery modes such as online, hybrid, and accelerated and/or course offerings in the Honors Program, Field and Experiential Learning, Study Abroad, or incorporating Learning Communities or Service Learning. Program Facility, Equipment, and the Integration of Technology Describe how the discipline/program uses their facility, instructional equipment, and the integration of technology and software to enhance teaching and learning. (A new or recently remodeled building is not required for this measure.) Other (in addition to five out of six measures listed above) Examples may include but are not limited to additional evidence of student engagement, service to the College community, and innovation in the discipline/program.
