2 MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN Dear Colleagues: The 21 st century arrived. Russian business develops at an ever increasing rate. Moreover, this development is not only quantitative, but also qualitative. Higher world prices for traditional Russian exports and capitalization growth of large Russian companies lead to a very noticeable flow of capital into the Russian economy. And this, in turn, by opening growth opportunities for Russian companies, materially changed the significance of key business factors. Finance and technologies, whilst remaining key factors in business success, take a back seat. The human factor and, especially, management efficiency come to the fore. Globalization requires improving not only the quality of management, but changing the whole approach to management. Russian business leaders have to manage differently not only from the Soviet times, but also from the first decade of the transition to a market economy in the 1990 s. Business changed qualitatively. New demands were made on management, which led to business education having to change in order to follow the evolution of business. GSBA MSU has always aspired to be a leader in business education, to be adequate for new challenges and demands. We believe that the more difficult the task we have to solve, the more opportunities we can find; the more ambitious the challenge we wish to meet, the more results we can achieve. Being a Russian business school, we naturally pay attention to the specific character of Russian business and management style, and to the Russian institutional environment. But, having paid due attention to them, we want all our students undergraduates to MBAs to be competitive not only in our country, but in the global context. In training our students we put the main emphasis on developing skills and behavior adequate for the demands of tomorrow s world. We realize that to accomplish this difficult task we have first to achieve perfection ourselves. One of the ways to do this is to develop solid international connections. We are open to all kinds of cooperation, seeing in it one of the most important conditions for accomplishing our mission to prepare highly qualified professionals, whose eyes are on the future, and who behave ethically and according to the world s best practices. 6 MISSION AND GOALS OF THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION The mission of the Graduate School of Business Administration (GSBA) is to prepare competitive business leaders by providing them with knowledge and skills to achieve success in the rapidly changing business world. School s curricula and supportive environment fuse the art, science and technology of business. The main difference here is ethics and morality," says Mr. Oleg Vikhansky. 7 SHAPE THE FUTURE GSBA DEGREE-GRANTING PROGRAMS GSBA accomplishes its mission and achieves its goals by providing the students with the highest quality management education. All GSBA degreegranting programs are responsive to the needs of both their students, actual and potential employers and the demands of the labor market. GSBA prepares its students to be effective managers in business, government, civil society and international organizations. Workload is deliberately demanding of GSBA students and faculty. All programs require a rigorous course of academic study and practical business involvement. All GSBA degree-granting programs build on the use of action-oriented methods of teaching which include practical exercises, case method, business games, and group projects, supported by superb teachers and instructors. These methods encourage students to internalize and activate the disciplines studied and simultaneously develop teamwork skills. July 8, 2005 Schools to grow GSBA requires high entry standards, which guarantees admission of exceptional candidates. The School offers the following degree-granting programs: MASTER OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (MBA) Creating Life-long Networks The GSBA MBA is a general management program offering a rigorous core curriculum with a wide range of electives that allows students to customize their MBA to meet individual interests and needs. Three different MBA programs allow MBA candidates to choose a specialization and schedule tailored to individual requirements. PART-TIME MBA Students study for two years without interrupting their career and attending the GSBA twice per week and one full day on the weekend, supplemented by distance learning. EXECUTIVE MBA Designed for professionals based outside Moscow or with time constraints due to travel requirements, this modular program requires intensive school and distance learning. MBA IN OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT The program is focused on teaching modern production systems, such as, the Toyota Production System, Kaizen Management System and Lean Manufacturing. 6

8 SHAPE THE FUTURE MASTER IN INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS (MIB) This intensive part-time program allows GSBA to welcome ambitious and creative students who choose to study and work at the same time. The MIB is a hybrid program, designed for students with non-managerial degrees. Utilizing modern learning tools, it provides students in-depth knowledge of professional business studies. Visiting faculty, innovative curriculum and international network of GSBA enable MIB students to pursue their careers in a truly international environment. BACHELOR OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (BBA) Core Liberal Arts, Management Knowledge and Experience The BBA is a highly selective program. Annual admissions are limited to 40 students to assure that each BBA candidate receives an individualized classical university education, anchored in the liberal arts yet allows undergraduates to work in a real business environment to test the knowledge and skills obtained at GSBA in the real world. International exposure is crucial for tomorrow s business leaders. The BBA program, therefore, encourages students to obtain experience living and learning in foreign cultures. Each of our students can go abroad for a carefully vetted study tour. THE DOCTORAL PROGRAM (PhD) Mentoring Researchers in Applied Economics and Management Research and the development of knowledge are fundamental dimensions of all GSBA programs. The GSBA Doctoral program is designed and structured to foster academic research in applied economics and management. The program is intended for candidates with outstanding intellectual abilities and a strong commitment to research. Requiring a minimum of three years, the Doctoral program consists of compulsory courses within the first year of study, teaching practice during the second and third years of study. Research, leading to the dissertation, starts in the first years and continues through the course of study. A wide variety of research options are available to PhD students: managerial science, strategy, finances, human resources management, and organizational behavior theory. The limited number of students and the breadth of subjects covered ensure that students receive personal attention and guidance from faculty members throughout their doctoral studies. 7

9 STRIVE TO DEVELOP GSBA TEACHING METHODS Asked what impresses them most about the GSBA, the students often say it s the way GSBA teaches. ACTION REFLECTION LEARNING GSBA s teaching philosophy In the Russian environment, GSBA pioneered in the utilization of the case study method. The core curriculum of each GSBA program includes cases based on Russian and international experience. GSBA faculty develop and refine their teaching and presentation techniques by participating in regularly scheduled faculty workshops. Cases confront students with complex decision-making situations, based on current business issues. Thoughtful case analysis and discussion allows students to formulate strategies that apply to their own business environment, especially as they participate in small teams that aggregate their collective functional, industrial and international experience. Teamwork provides individual participants with insight into each individual s strength and weakness while interacting with others and, thereby, contributes to inter-personal skill development. The final presentation of results of both individual and team efforts facilitates the development of essential communication skills. Students work on their group projects assignments during their free time. Presentation of group projects is an experience in itself. The results can be presented as a remake of a sensational blockbuster movie or as a standard business presentation. Students compete in both their creativeness to attract audience s attention and to demonstrate the results of their work. Linkages between the corporate world and GSBA operate on several levels. Top executives from several Russian and multinational companies lecture at the school and interact with MBA students at the Meet with Leaders seminar. Undergraduates are introduced to actual business situations by participating in Business Practice course. Distance learning tools are actively used in GSBA Executive MBA and MBA in Operations Management programs. Audio and video materials are regularly employed. GSBA has a large database of teaching videos. 8

10 STRIVE TO DEVELOP Skillful utilization of computer-simulated business games allows GSBA students to see the interrelationship between key functional courses and deepens and strengthens a range of practical business skills. Learning how to compete in a global business environment is a primary lesson learned in The Management Game, organized by Carnegie Mellon University. GSBA students compete against business school teams from US, Argentina, Chile, China, Japan, Mexico and Ukraine. The MBABEST21 Business Game was developed by Toshiba Corporation at the request of the ABEST21 Association. This market environment simulator offers a virtual marketplace whereby virtual companies led by student teams from all over the world compete against each other in different product and regional segments. The Business Game is utilized in Strategy courses throughout the ABEST21 network. The Financial ABEST21 Game is an interactive computer simulation, designed to mimic the goals and constraints of a real life business firm. The game pits teams of MBA students from dozens of business schools against each other in an interactive management game spanning continents and time zones. The goal of the simulation is to develop basic managerial skills by challenging participants to apply the knowledge base and skills of all major business disciplines (finance, marketing, strategy, operations, etc.) in a constantly changing cultural environment of intense rivalry. Jointly with the Russian Trading System «Stock Exchange» GSBA organizes a series of practical seminars to develop practical skills for trading stock, futures and options markets. Students learn to trade by means of an electronic trading system and analyze their positions using the toolkit granted by the stock exchange. 9

11 PUSH THE LIMITS OTHER GSBA PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES Theoretical and applied research programs with the Institute for Complex Strategic Studies GSBA places a premium on the linkage between the educational process and economic and managerial research. GSBA was the first school in the post-soviet area to develop a data base of cases, relevant to the Russian environment, and to provide strong methodological support to faculty from Russian regions. Today most of the research projects are realized through an affiliated membership with the Institute for Complex Strategic Studies (ICSS). ICSS is a leading Russian think tank and is a strategic partner of GSBA. ICSS aim is to contribute to the quality of economic policy in Russia through open, fact-based and policy relevant research analysis and discussion. Supported by leading Russian private sector firms, and contractual relations with several ministries, such as, the Ministry of Industry and Energy, the RF Presidential Administration and grants from the Moscow Scientific Foundation, ICSS research covers a broad range of issues including monetary, energy, taxation, industrial and social policies. GSBA-ICSS Summer School is a week worth of years. Besides getting new knowledge and meeting new people, we realized something else: to be successful, we have first to be ready for changes, not to be afraid of them, and second, to be able to change. And we decided to change for the better, to be different. Dana Karashaeva, Nalchik, North Caucasus In everybody s life there are meetings, able to change the deepest attitudes and the whole way of life. For me such a meeting was the GSBA-ICSS Summer School. Ilshat Kharisov, Kazan ICSS researchers were recently awarded the prestigious Naschold Award for Excellence in Scholarship in Public Management by the International Public Management Network for their pioneering work on infrastructure development in Brazil. GSBA Summer School for Young Economists Annually, GSBA and ICSS Summer Schools contribute to the intellectual and human capital development of Russia. Participants from Russian regions, selected on a highly competitive basis, learn key economic and management concepts at lectures and workshops offered by leading Russian and international economists. GSBA School for Young Managers As a public service, thirty competitively selected secondary school students participate annually in this tuition-free program of basic economics and management courses. 10

12 PUSH THE LIMITS Strategy for Development Seminars Since 2001 GSBA has worked jointly with ICSS to present a research seminar Strategy for Development, which convenes monthly and gathers over fifty of Russia s most important decision-makers and molders of public opinion for the corporate, governmental, media and academic communities. The seminar is held in high esteem as an effective venue to organize wide and frank discussion about the most acute questions for Russia s economic and social development, including economic growth, public administration reform, national security, industrial and energy policy. The most recent topics and speakers were: Public Investments and Economic Diversification: International Experience and Russia, Dr. John Litwak, Chief Economist at the World Bank in Russia. Russian Economy Growth in 2005, Dr. Andrey Belousov, Deputy Minister of Economic Development and Trade of the Russian Federation Russian Economic Policy in 2005, Dr. Evsey Gurvich, Director of the Economic Expert Group Demography and Demographical Policy in Russia, Prof. Valery Elizarov, Director of the Center of Population Research, School of Economics, MSU Trends in Innovation Activity in Russia, Prof. Leonid Gokhberg, Director of the Institute of Statistics and Economics of Knowledge (ISEK), Higher School of Economics Trade-Unions and Other Labor Organizations in the Economy: A Comparative Analysis, Dr. Rafael Gomez, London School of Economics Russia: the Heritage of the Soviet Union, Prof. Ruslan Grinberg, Director of the Institute of International Economy and Policy. 11

13 PROGRAMS OF INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION IN International experience is crucial for today s business leaders just as it is for GSBA students and alumnae. To prepare GSBA students for successful participation in the global economy international cooperation is a crucial dimension of GSBA s comparative advantage. For many years GSBA students have been given the opportunity to participate in traditional field studies in Japan, where they visit leading Japanese companies and immerse themselves in the experience of living in a foreign culture. GSBA is proud to say that each of its students has the option of participating abroad in a carefully designed study tour and can fully benefit from the very effective faculty and student exchanges, research collaborations and association memberships of GSBA. ABEST21 Seminar ABEST21 Seminar is a summer event for students from member schools of ABEST 21. Launched by Graduate School of International Management, Aoyama Gakuin University, ABEST21 Seminar consists of a business game competition, international students teams presentations, lectures on business and management topics, company visits and cultural program. ABEST21 Seminar, from 2007 taking place in different countries, is a unique opportunity for students from participating schools to internationalize and to meet with colleagues from around the world. Teaching Materials In 2005 ABEST21 launched an initiative to create a portfolio of teaching materials. Teaching materials, developed by faculty members of participating schools, represent business and management of countries of origin of participating schools and contribute to promotion of the international perspectives in the learning process of ABEST21member schools. In 2006 a first volume of ABEST21 Teaching Materials has been published. 12

15 GSBA S INTERNATIONAL PARTNERS Graduate School of International Management, Aoyama Gakuin University, Japan Graduate School of International Management (GSIM) is a co-founder of the ABEST21 and the main academic and research partner of GSBA in Japan. GSIM students and faculty participate in the annual field studies of GSBA MBA students. For many years GSIM has welcomed BA and MA students for a Tokyo Seminar - an intensive program combining academic and practical events, including lectures, factory visits and a business game. Northeastern University, Boston, USA The College of Business Administration, Northeastern University, Boston, USA, has been GSBA s partner since 1990, with mutual research projects, student exchange and faculty visits being a part of this cooperation. In June, 2006 a study tour for GSBA undergraduates has been organized at the NU College of Business Administration. Carnegie Mellon University, USA Carnegie Mellon University is a creator of Global Management Game - a widely recognized business game with over 70 international student teams participating annually, GSBA team being the only Russian participant. Playing the role of senior managers, GSBA students operate computer simulated manufacturing companies and compete with business school teams from Argentina, Chile, China, Japan, Mexico, Ukraine and the USA. The KAIZEN Institute Kaizen in Japanese means a process of a continuous improvement. The KAIZEN Institute is a global organization which provides consulting services and supports companies of all sizes and industrial segments as well as private and public service organizations. Experts of KAIZEN Institute participate as visiting lecturers in GSBA s MBA in Operations Management program. The London School of Economics The London School of Economics participates in GSBA s Summer School for Young Economists - a program for graduate economics students from Russian regions. 14

16 Guanghua School of Management, Peking University, China The Guanghua School of Management, Peking University is one of the best business schools in China. The School offers undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs, with a total enrollment of more than 3,000 students. Guanghua s MBA program won first place as the Most Influential MBA of China in a ranking, conducted by the World Executive. Guanghua is known for cutting-edge academic research, extensive involvement in government policy formulation, and close ties with the business community. School of Management, Fudan University, China School of Management, Fudan University offers 6 programs for Doctor s degree, 10 programs for Master s degree, 7 undergraduate specialties, and 3 mobile stations for post-doctoral research. In teaching work, the guideline of the School is to keep pace with the world advanced level, train managerial professionals that are demanded by the Chinese economy, and emphasize designing of curriculums according to the international practice. Estonian Business School, Estonia Estonian Business School (EBS) is a private business school of university standing, offering Bachelor s, Master s and Doctorate level programs in the field of business administration, public administration and information technology management. Founded in 1988, EBS was the first institution in Estonia to introduce diploma business education. Currently more than 2000 students study in first degree and postgraduate programs, both part and full time. EBS teaching languages are Estonian, English and Russian. The school is accredited by CEEMAN (Central and East European Management Development Association) and Estonian Ministry of Education. EBS has the best library in economics in Estonia. European Business School, Germany European Business School is currently the most innovative private university in Germany. As one of the first business administration faculties in Germany, it has consistently switched to Bachelor and Master programs. The cornerstones of the new programs are: academic excellence, practical relevance, internationality, personality development. Queen s University, International Study Center, UK Internationalization is the cornerstone of the International Study Centre (ISC), Herstmonceux Castle experience. Living, studying and traveling together, students have the opportunity to share their own cultural heritage with their peers, as well as members of local communities around the Castle. All of this while learning about the unique culture of Britain and earning academic course credits from one of Canada s top universities. Management Institute of Paris, France MIP, Management Institute of Paris is an international business school which prepares students for the European Bachelor in Management (BAC + 3). The MIP proposes an education in management techniques, a complete knowledge of the corporate world as well as solid human and ethical training. 15

17 EMBRACE CHANGE MASTER OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (MBA) Creating Life-long Networks Coming from different environments and different backgrounds, GSBA students share one essential trait willingness to develop themselves. GSBA is pleased to help each of them to achieve their goals. Three different MBA programs allow students to tailor their studies so that individual career aspirations are achieved. I can definitely say that I got a new world outlook here. Andrey Serzhanov, MBA-2002 PART-TIME MBA Students study for two years without interrupting careers by attending GSBA evening courses twice a week and a full day each weekend. Curricula include compulsory foundation, management and change management modules. A wide array of electives is also available. Curricula are constantly reviewed and updated to ensure that graduates will be able to cope with rapidly changing business environments and to meet the challenges facing them, whether in manufacturing, commercial and financial services, consultancy or public sectors. In the end of the program MBA students present their diploma theses, which can be a summary of a professional project, business plan or market research. Typically, the diploma thesis is related to the professional activity of MBA students. This last important step allows students to strengthen their analytical skills and to bear witness to the knowledge and skills acquired at GSBA. Part-time MBA students take full advantage of the socializing opportunities at GSBA, participating in football and bowling tournaments, traditional country retreats and New Year celebrations. 16
