3 Definitions BPM: ( Business Process Management (BPM) is a holistic management approach focused on aligning all aspects of an organization with the wants and needs of clients. It promotes business effectiveness and efficiency while striving for innovation, flexibility, and integration with technology. BPM attempts to improve processes continuously. It can therefore be described as a process optimization process Gerda & Walter Koch (AIT) 3

4 Definitions BPMN: ( ) Business Process Model Notation, the BPMN standard, provides businesses with the capability of understanding their internal business procedures in a graphical notation and gives organizations the ability to communicate these procedures in a standard manner. Business Process Modeling Notation was developed by the Business Process Management Initiative to provide a process modeling notation that is understood by all process modelers, users, analysts, etc. (maintained by OMG Object Management Group since 2005) Gerda & Walter Koch (AIT) 4

5 BPD: Definitions A Business Process Diagram (BPD) is a simple diagram, made up of a set of graphical elements, that depicts a business process. There are four primary elements of BPD: - Flow Objects - Connecting Objects - Swimlanes - Artifacts Gerda & Walter Koch (AIT) 5

14 ICOM/CIDOC working group MPI Museum Process Implementation 1) The working groups aims at implementing reference workflows for main business processes as found in museums, galleries and similar organisations. The elaborated work flows should constitute a basis on which museums of different kind and size can build up their own workflows adapted to their special needs. The design of the workflows is based on the BPMN (Business Process Modelling Notation) which has been standardized in 2010 by OMG (Object Modelling Group). To elaborate the workflows an open source tool will be used which converts the graphical design into an XML presentation which directly can be executed by native BPMN processing engines. 1) Gerda & Walter Koch (AIT) 14
