Introduction In general solo gateway is a complete solution for the computer and communication infrastructure of a small business, while remaining secure and easy to configure and use. Based on international standards and compatible with all technological platforms available today, your solo integrates easily with your existing network. It provides connectivity for your phone network, your local computer network, and the Internet, making management and access to these 3 networks unified and complete. SIMPLE. The complexity of IT equipment is the most deterrent factor for small business environments. solo makes everything easier for you by integrating all services provided. This means that there are no conflicts between different services and all the services use the same settings database. For example, User Management is global and applies for all the services you use, so are the Network Settings, Access Permissions, and so on, thus any changes on these will be automatically reflected to all services. But more importantly, using the Web Interface of SOLO Gateway is easy. Really easy. There is no need for you being an expert or having any advanced knowledge of IT systems; it is as simple as navigating and using your favorite website. COMPLETE. Integration of different systems is the prime issue when installing IT equipment. solo was designed as a complete solution for your business. Following this concept, the rich feature-set, the provided Web Interface and the several options for preconfigured hardware, make solo a turn-key solution, with batteries included. The features list is constantly growing, as our development team is actively integrating more and more features in each new update. ALL YOU NEED. Being the nexus of your communication and computing networks, solo is a simple, but powerful solution for Small Businesses looking for ICT infrastructure. The Total Cost of Ownership is lowered, as the feature-set that SOLO Gateway provides is so rich that conventional software and hardware solutions with the same functionality come with a much higher cost for licenses and support services. 7
Features As a complete solution, solo provides a broad range of features. You might not be familiar with the terms that are used, but here is a complete features list just to whet your appetite: Voice Network Computer Network Hybrid PBX Fax Server File Server Collaboration Server Printer Server User-to-site VPN Site-to-site VPN Local Network Management Hybrid PBX (telephone exchange) Analog/VoIP external lines Analog/VoIP internal phones IVR support w/ prerecorded clips Complete and advanced -to-Fax gateway Fax-to- gateway Using PBX analog external lines Unlimited Fax devices Storage spaces (shares) Detailed access permissions Personal Storage for each user Integrated Antivirus for all files Shared Calendars & Tasks Shared Addressbook integration Network printer-sharing Arbitrary number of printers USB / Parallel printer support Transparent connection to LAN from anywhere on the Internet No s/w installation required Transparently interconnect 2 or more LANs through the Internet High security, with cryptography WiFi Access Point operation with advanced encryption/security IP management, NATP & routing 8

Just for the short installation procedure, make sure you have the following attached to the computer on which you will install solo: Computer Monitor (either CRT or TFT/LCD) Checked! Keyboard (USB or PS2) Checked! 9
Additionally, you will need the following equipment: Broadband Internet Access (e.g. DSL or Cable) ready and Checked! working Broadband Router/Modem with Ethernet/LAN port (USB-only Checked! will not do) USB Hard Drive, in case you want to setup Backup for your solo Checked! Phones (Analog/VoIP) that will be connected to your solo Checked! Local Network cabling, along with switches or hubs necessary Checked! for accommodating all connected equipment, as described later in the network diagram Broadband Internet Access (e.g. DSL or Cable) ready and Checked! working Broadband Router/Modem with Ethernet/LAN port (USB-only Checked! will not do), with access to it USB Hard Drive, in case you want to setup Backup for your solo Checked! Phones (Analog/VoIP) that will be connected to your solo Checked! You will, also, need some information from your ISP: Your Outgoing Mail Server, also known as SMTP Server, so that your solo can send s to the rest of the world For your Outgoing Mail Server, you might also need a Username and Password. These should be the same used for logging in to your Internet Connection If you already own a Domain Name, like and you want to use this Domain Name with your solo, then you will need to be making changes to the settings of this Domain Name. Make sure you can, either by getting access to your ISP s corresponding management web-page or by verifying that you can make changes by phone or fax If you want to use a new Domain Name, then get it and make sure you have control over it, like described above Checked! Checked! Checked! Checked! The Local Network revisited Your solo is the center of your communication, either Data or Voice. That being said, it is easy to understand the following diagram of a typical solo installation: 10
Internal Analog Phones Internal VoIP Phones INTERNET ADSL Router External Network Interface Ethernet Phone Cables Internal Network Interface Ethernet Ethernet LAN Switch Ethernet Ethernet External Analog Landlines Fax Lines Phone Cables Phone Lines Phone Lines Ethernet To make all these connections possible, your solo provides the following communication ports: Internal Network Interface: this is the Ethernet port that the Local Network is connected to. External Network Interface: this is the Ethernet port that the Broadband Router is connected to. Wireless Network: with the appropriate expansion card, your solo can operate as a wireless Access Point, allowing wireless devices, like laptops and PDAs to connect to the Local Network. Analog Telephony Ports: through the use of a special expansion card, your solo can use plain analog lines and analog phones for the Telephone Exchange. Installing the software from the DVD 1. Make sure that your server does not contain any useful or important data. All data stored in the hard drives of the server will be permanently erased! 2. In case you have a server that is equipped with a hardware-based RAID controller and you have a pair of hard drives you want to use on a RAID-1 mirror, you have to configure the controller to have your pair of hard drives operate as RAID-1. When you boot the server, usually there is a message from the RAID controller prompting you to press a key combination to enter its configuration menu. If you do not see such a message and the RAID controller is embedded in the motherboard of the server, then you can access this menu through the BIOS Setup of your server. If you want to use RAID, it is vital to configure the RAID array before installing the software. 3. In case the server does not have a DVD drive, use a USB DVD drive. 4. Insert the Installation DVD in the DVD drive and power up the server. 5. If the installation of solo is not started, then please check the Boot Sequence or Boot Order settings in the BIOS of your server. You will have to set the server to try to boot first from the DVD drive, or the USB DVD drive. Save the settings and restart the server. 11
6. When the installation of solo is started, the following screen is displayed: Press the Enter button to start the installation procedure of solo. 7. If you are using a USB DVD drive, then after a few minutes you might be presenting with this screen: Using the arrows of the keyboard, select the option Select driver and press the Enter button. A list will show up: 12
Using the arrows of the keyboard, select the item USB Mass Storage driver for Linux (usb-storage), which is near the end of the list, and press the Enter button to continue. 8. From this point forward, installation will continue automatically, until it is completed. Installation might take a while. Do not power-off the server or interrupt the installation in any way. 9. When the installation is complete, the DVD will be ejected and you will be prompted to reboot the server. Use the Tab button of the keyboard to navigate to the Reboot button and hit the Enter button to reboot your server. 10. Make sure the server can boot even without a keyboard attached. If a keyboard is required, you can change this through the BIOS setup, so that a keyboard is not required. Then detach the keyboard and monitor from the server, since they are no longer used at any point by any user or the administrator of solo. Connecting to the Web Interface 1. Power-up a computer connected to the LAN-area of solo. Make sure the computer is not assigned a static local IP, instead it must use DHCP (automatic assignment of the IP address). 2. Wait for the computer to be connected to the LAN. If it fails ( limited connectivity ), then you should switch the LAN and WAN cables of the server. Wait again for the computer to be connected to the Local Network. 3. Open a web browser (preferably Mozilla Firefox) and use this address: 4. A Username and Password will be requested. Use the following: Username: admin Password: admin (You should change this password!) 5. Through this Web Interface you can administer and, also, use solo to the full extend. Activation is needed so that all modules are activated and you can see the complete menu. Activation 1. Connect to the Web Interface, as described above. 2. From the menu on the left of the Web Interface, select System Maintenance and then Activate solo. 3. To the screen that appears, insert your Serial Number. (Your Serial Number is located on the back of the DVD case. If you do not have a Serial Number, please contact Solo Gateway Support Department to obtain one.) Also, insert any more additional data that is requested. The additional data will make sales and technical support easier, so please provide accurate information. 13
4. After you have completed the form, click the Activate button. Your solo will connect to the central License Server to obtain a valid license and be activated. 5. If you get an error, then make sure your solo is connected to the Internet and make sure that you have typed your Serial Number correctly. If you cannot activate your solo, please contact Solo Gateway Support Department. 6. After successful activation, click the Back button. Your solo now is fully activated with all modules enabled. 7. Updates are automatic, but you should explicitly update your solo before using it, for maximum robustness. You can update your solo by selecting Maintenance and then Update from the menu. Now you are ready to get started with your solo gateway 14
