1 AN ROINN TALMHAÍOCHTA, BIA AGUS MARA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE, FOOD AND THE MARINE ACCEPTED MOBILE SHEEP HANDLING FACILITIES This list details all the companies that are accepted as producing mobile sheep handling facilities. The units will still be subject to a final inspection before grant-aid is paid. If a manufacturer is not included on this list, then initial approval for grant aid shall not be given unless the applicant arranges for the Departmental acceptance of the chosen system. If a sheep handling facilities manufacturing company which is not on this list wishes to be included, it should send detailed specifications of their units to: Unit, Nitrates, Biodiversity and Division, Pavilion A, Grattan Business Centre, Dublin Road, Portlaoise, Co. Laois, Ireland. Note 1: Mobile sheep handling equipment is defined as being equipment that can be transported using a trailer unit, attachable wheels or tractor three-point linkage. The equipment shall not be concreted, bolted or permanently fixed in place. Note 2: All separate elements of handling equipment, including penning, within one unit shall have the same unique serial number engraved (or printed on a securely fixed plate or securely fixed metal label or securely fixed plastic sticker) on each component. The serial numbers shall not be written on to the components using permanent maker or a similar such system. Only mobile ad-lib meal feeders, mobile fodder feeders and mobile hay racks are not required to have serial numbers. Note 3: Descriptions of Handling : A basic mobile handling race will consist of a gate, back gate and sides held together by pins. The handling race can be dismantled for transport. Mobile penning sections are then used to create collection areas at the and rear of the handling race. The handling race is the section between the gate and rear gate and may include two pen sections to act as a funnel to direct the sheep into the race. (Note: for grant-aid purposes mobile penning is considered as a separate investment to a handling race.) A Portable Sheep Handling Race with wheels will consist of a handling race that is permanently fixed together and mounted on wheels that may be detachable. The handling race may have a guillotine gate at the rear and drafting gate at the, non return gates and a footbath along the length of the race which can be covered over when not in use. The handling race is the section between the gate and rear gate and may include two pen sections to act as a funnel to direct the sheep into the race. (Note: for grant-aid purposes mobile penning is considered as a separate investment to a handling race.) The weighing facilities and rollover crate may be included along with the race or may be separate. (Note: for grant-aid purposes, weighing facilities and rollover crates are S 136A
2 considered as separate investments to a handling unit and must be applied for separately.) A batch footbath is a footbath that is separate from a handling unit and can hold around 8 to 16 sheep at a time. The footbath is surrounded by penning to retain the sheep in the footbath. Mobile Adoption unit with penning is a unit designed to restrain ewes for 1 to 2 days while adopting / fostering lambs with integral penning to keep the lambs close to the ewe. The units must be designed to allow the ewe to stand and lie and must be for the greater good of the fostered lambs and must not cause any unnecessary distress to the ewe. The ewe must have access to both fresh water and feed at all times while restrained in the unit. The units must have a minimum of 3.5m of penning this 3.5m excludes the adoption unit. A Mobile Adoption unit is a unit as described above for use with existing penning arrangements. PDA EID tag reader and management software package. This is an electronic system that reads the tag numbers of the sheep and additional information (such as weight, sex, No. of lambs, veterinary treatments, etc) can be recorded on the system in the field. It will include a full management package for recording all information about the sheep which can be uploaded to a computer or viewed on the PDA itself. EID tag reader and software. This is an electronic system that reads the tag numbers of the sheep, and has software to enable the numbers to be transferred to a computer. Mobile ad-lib Meal Feeder (creep feeders) these are designed for the feeding of meal to lambs or hoggets. They must be raised off the ground and covered. Semicircular troughs are not acceptable. Only Mobile ad-lib Meal Feeders that have been purchased are acceptable for grant-aid. Mobile Fodder Feeder (round or rectangular) these are designed for the feeding of large bales of silage and the sides are designed such that the sheep can insert their heads into the feeder to reach the silage. The feeders must be specifically designed for use by sheep. The use of inverted round feeders for cattle is not permitted. Only Mobile Fodder Feeders that have been purchased are acceptable for grant-aid. Mobile Hay Rack. Hay Racks shall be V-shaped and the sides shall be covered by steel mesh and shall be free standing. The hay area of the rack shall be raised, at least, 200mm off the ground. Only Hay Racks that have been purchased are acceptable for grant-aid. Note 4: All steel work on equipment must be either, galvanised to EN 1461 or shotblasted, primed, and painted as follows: All scale and rust shall be removed by shot-blasting to Sa 2.5 or ISP 8501:1980. A holding zinc-rich primer of 25 microns shall be applied within 12 hours of shotblasting. A further 50 microns of primer, and 50 microns of micaceous iron oxide finishing coat, shall provide a total dried coat of minimum 125 microns. (80 microns
3 in two coats of the proprietary paint ZINGA can be used as an alternative on shotblasted steel to the above standard). Note 5: Mobile ad-lib Meal Feeders (creep feeders), Mobile Fodder Feeders (round or rectangular) and Mobile Hay Racks are required to meet the specification set out in Note 3 above, but are not required to be purchased from a company on this accepted list..
