Want to change tomorrow? Start with us, today. latino memphis
Amigos, Our Mission Latino Memphis was founded in 1995 and today we assist Latinos in the Greater Memphis area by connecting, collaborating and advocating for health, education and justice. Our Vision We envision a future in which every Latino in the Memphis metropolitan area has the opportunity and the resources to become an engaged and active member of the larger community. I discovered Latino Memphis a little more than 10 years ago. I was looking to work with a committed group of people that shared what I call my practical idealism a belief that through effective programs, service organizations can make a real, concrete difference in people s lives.when I walked through the door, I had no idea I had found just such an organization, much less that I would spend the next decade working for, volunteering with and serving Latino Memphis. I ve gladly given so much of my time to Latino Memphis because I believe its work provides a fundamental service not only to its clients but also to our city and our country. Throughout this country s history, waves of immigrants from across the world have helped reinvigorate our democracy continually infusing and reinventing our shared culture. America is stronger as a result. Through its work in education, health and justice, Latino Memphis facilitates this process at the local level, helping new immigrants integrate into the fabric of the community. But Latino Memphis and its clients are more than local melting pots they represent a real opportunity for our city. For more than 50 years, Memphis has seen itself through a black and white lens, unable to grow beyond this historic perception. The growth of the Latino community in Memphis represents an opportunity for us to create a new city one that learns from the past, moves beyond it and becomes a welcoming, multiculturally vibrant community not only tolerant of diversity, but embracing it. Latino Memphis is helping lead the way towards redefining what it means to be a Memphian. I support Latino Memphis and I encourage you to join me in assisting Latino individuals, children and families while building a stronger Memphis at the same time. Gracias! Bryce Ashby, Board Chair

EL CENTRO program success: 2,500 referrals The Center The Latino population in Memphis has more than doubled since % live in poverty. when given the chance, secondgeneration Latinos are more likely than their immigrant parents to graduate college, have high-paying jobs, live above the poverty line and own homes. Sources: US Census Bureau, The University of Memphis, and the Center for American Progress At the core of our work is El Centro, where Latino immigrants in the Memphis area can turn for help of all kinds. We listen first because we know that each client s situation is different. We carefully evaluate each one, then connect each client with an organization that meets his or her unique needs. Through El Centro, we also provide support such as access to computers for online government forms, help with job applications, assistance in filling out forms for the Department of Human Services and other government agencies and clerical support such as copies and faxes. Program Goal: Expand community partnerships to connect more Latinos with the services they need
Tu Voz Your voice A free and just society demands people be informed, thoughtful and engaged in the sometimes hard and messy work of governing. On critical issues of health, education and justice, Latino Memphis has found its voice in Tu Voz and it is a voice that needs to be heard. Jeff Fedorchak, VP of Corporate Government Affairs, ServiceMaster Member of Tu Voz Policy Team Latinos are a growing part of our community. They need a VOICE
Tu voz Tu Voz is an ear, a voice and an agent of change on issues impacting the Spanish-speaking community of the Memphis area. We provide opportunities for education and dialogue to the community and to decision makers. Through advocacy, policy research, training and civic engagement activities, Tu Voz helps the Latino community become more engaged and influential in the policies and processes that impact our daily lives. Through Tu Voz, we are forging top-of-mind awareness of Latino issues for the wider Memphis community including community groups, businesses, schools and government agencies. >Program Successes Launched Latino Policy Team of local business and corporate leaders to create a latino memphis policy agenda Took Memphis students to meet with members of Congress and their staffs in Washington, D.C. Built growing partnerships with education, health and law enforcement agencies

derechos Program Successes: Dispelling fears and building trust between the Latino community and law enforcement In the first 3 months: - 58 client safe haven consultations with Memphis police without fear of deportation - Legal referrals for our clients in over 50 cases including child custody, divorce, traffic, robbery, child support, internal affairs, vehicular homicide and DCS Derechos is an access to justice program that provides affordable legal services to the community. In addition, we build strategic collaborations with other service providers and government agencies to address the community legal needs for information and effective services. Derechos also acts as a liaison between law enforcement and the community to dispel fear and build trust. Program Goal: Double safe haven crime reporting opportunities by 2016

Abriendo Puertas is a place where students feel comfortable and safe, a place where they can build personal and professional relationships. Dante Bonilla, Graduate of Kingsbury High School, now attending Mid-South Community College Source: Hispanic Trends Project, Pew Research center
Abriendo Puertas Program Successes Student participation tripled during the first year 91% of students graduated high school and were accepted into college ONe-Third of students applied for and received scholarships totaling over $120,000 Expanded from one to five high schools during the first year Latinos are the fastest-growing student population in America, but graduation and college attainment rates for Latino students are among the lowest. Abriendo Puertas partners with local high schools to provide Latino students with comprehensive education services. This program helps students reach above and beyond their educational goals by providing mentoring and offering college-preparatory activities to ensure students success in post-secondary education. In one year, Abriendo Puertas had a hand in helping 91% of its core group of Kingsbury High School seniors graduate High School, and apply for and get accepted to college. Abriendo Puertas will continue working with these students, as well as other Latino college students, to increase retention and graduation rates and promote achievement and career success. Program Goal: 50% of participants will earn a post-secondary degree by 2017.
