1 MLH System Community Benefit Report 2012 At Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare, we take our mission seriously and are committed to giving back to the community in a meaningful way. We continue to be the largest provider of TennCare services in the state, and our facilities serve all areas of the city and county. As a faith-based institution, access to healthcare for all of the community is important to us. By far, the largest percentage of MLH is the MHMH hospitals: Methodist Healthcare-Memphis Hospitals includes Methodist University Hospital, Methodist North Hospital, Methodist South Hospital, Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown Hospital and Le Bonheur Children s Hospital. Each of those entities gives much to the community each year and is supported by Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare. In 2012, Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare provided more than $143,700,000 million of net community benefit expense to Charity, Medicaid, TennCare, Medical Education, and community services. Net community benefit expense is calculated using a standard approach as required for government benefit reporting. Medical Education and Research Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare supports via direct salary and benefit contributions to the University of Tennessee graduate medical training positions (GME) at Methodist University Hospital, Le Bonheur Children s Medical Center, and Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown Hospital. These GME residents and fellows are employees and trainees at the University of Tennessee, but their financial support for salaries and benefits comes via Methodist. These trainees spend time at a Methodist hospital during the periods of Methodist support and are involved in patient care in addition to educational activities. Methodist supported the University of Tennessee Health Science Center with $27 million in education and training. Church Health Center/Christ Community Health Services As an early supporter of the Church Health Center, Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare strongly believes in its mission to serve the working poor. From its beginnings as a project of St. John's United Methodist Church and of Dr. Scott Morris to the comprehensive community resource it is today, the Church Health Center provides affordable health care, dentistry, optometry, pastoral counseling, and health education to those who need these services in Memphis. Methodist Healthcare is proud to support this worthy endeavor. Methodist helps support the

2 Church Health Center by providing patient care free of charge. We also gave $1,000 to support their Rock for Love concert/fundraiser. Methodist supported the MEMPHIS Plan in 2012 with $ 10 million in funds. The MEMPHIS Plan is the Church Health Center s employer-sponsored healthcare plan for small businesses and the self-employed. However, it is not health insurance. By relying on donated services from volunteer doctors, area hospitals and laboratories, the MEMPHIS Plan offers uninsured people in lower-wage jobs access to quality, affordable healthcare. This includes primary and specialty care, hospitalization and other medical services. The MEMPHIS Plan provides healthcare for uninsured working people who fall through the cracks of the current healthcare system because they earn too much to qualify for state or federal programs. It also answers the need of small business owners who care about their employees but cannot afford to provide traditional health insurance. With the MEMPHIS Plan, employers can provide an essential benefit while enhancing job productivity and retaining valued employees. Christ Community Health Services has focused on fulfilling the physical, spiritual and emotional needs of the poor, the uninsured and the homeless in Memphis since Through strategically placed health care centers and outreach programs, they provide high-quality health care and other services to thousands of patients, caregivers, students and families each year. Methodist provided $5,631,977 for patients of The Church Health Center and Christ Community. Community Education Methodist University Hospital hosted two education symposiums for the EMS community: "When Every Second Counts" Pre-Hospital Care Cardiac Symposium on May 22nd, with 192 attendees and "When Every Second Counts" Pre-Hospital Care Neuro Symposium on November 15 th with 219 attendees. Total cost of these offerings was $45,776. Methodist Healthcare provided training for 6,119 nurses, therapists, physicians, and other medical professionals from outside our organization either through conferences, rotations, or job shadowing. Le Bonheur Community Health and Well-Being Le Bonheur Children s Hospital s Community Health and Well-Being Division extends the work of the hospital beyond its walls. Through a variety of programs, we make a difference in the everyday lives of children in communities throughout

3 the region. While these programs are largely funded by grants, Methodist also provided monies to support these programs. Methodist Healthcare Foundation The Foundation raises funds to benefit and strengthen the Methodist Hospital programs and Centers of Excellence. Funds raised enhance clinical and research initiatives, underwrite costs for facilities, technicians and equipment and bridge the gap between what hospital reimbursement covers and what is necessary to stay on the cutting edge of medical science. In 2012, the Foundation provided $2,571,271 in support of these programs, all which benefited the community. Here are some highlights: The Foundation raised funds to open the Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center, located at Methodist University Hospital.
