3 PAGE 3 from the PRESIDENT What does IALL mean to you? by Martin Reimer (Western Iowa Tech ), IALL president This has been an interesting year to say the least. We have been experiencing a long, cold winter so far, but spring will be here before you know it. Spring signifies a change of season, a time of renewal, and a time to think about the future. I would like all of us to take this time to also think about how the ideas of change and renewal apply to the future of IALL. With those thoughts in mind, the IALL board has been working on several fronts to make sure IALL is moving forward. One method of making sure IALL is moving forward as an organization is its annual Legislative Breakfast. On Feb. 24, dedicated IALL members braved the cold weather to visit with state legislators. This yearly exchange is an opportunity for IALL members to thank legislators from across the state for their support of lifelong learning at our community colleges. It is also an opportunity for us to express our ideas and visions for how lifelong learning can play a role in strengthening and enriching the lives of Iowans. It is important that we are speaking with our area legislators not only on this one day but throughout the year on how they can help support us as we help Iowans on so many levels. The IALL board is continually thinking about the future and what our place is in it. While we always hope for the best, we must also be prepared for the worst. Recently, Nebraska s lifelong learning association one that that had been in existence for over 75 years dissolved. That event led to the realization that although IALL is strong and has no intention of dissolving, it did not have a plan to address that issue. With that in mind, the board has been drafting language to be incorporated into the constitution in the event that dissolution would ever occur. We plan to incorporate the following draft into the IALL Constitution at this year s conference in July. Please contact us if you have comments, questions, or suggestions. Your input and insights are welcome. PROPOSED CHANGE: IALL Constitutional Amendment, Article V Board of Directors, Section 1 In the event of the dissolution of IALL, in compliance with the Iowa Code, Title XII, as determined by a majority vote of the Board of Directors, the Board of Directors, after paying or making provisions for the payment of all liabilities of IALL, will dispose of all remaining assets of IALL. After all liabilities are paid, any remaining monies will be distributed to an organization(s) engaged in adult and continuing education under Section 501 (c)(3), as deemed appropriate by the IALL Board of Directors. Additionally, the board has been meeting to create a new strategic plan. The last plan was created in Much has changed in the world in these few short years economically, technologically, and demographically. This is a perfect time for IALL to define its strategy for the future. The vision for IALL is to be the leading force in lifelong learning education in Iowa. My question to you is how???? What do we need to do in the coming years to achieve this vision? That is where I encourage each of you to send me your ideas. We will be taking suggestions over the next few months and incorporating them into a plan that will be presented at the IALL conference this July. These thoughts are at the forefront for IALL leadership. We ask for input on these initiatives and other endeavors to make sure that we remain relevant and attentive to your needs.

5 PAGE 5 Important Update: IALL Annual Conference July LEADING THE CHANGE IN 2010: The Transformation of Lifelong Learning by Peggy Thie (Indian Hills ), IALL president-elect and Conference Planning Committee chair LEADING THE CHANGE IN 2010: The Transformation of Lifelong Learning is the theme for the combined conference of IALL and the Adult Literacy Institute. This conference will be held this summer at the Holiday Inn & Suites on Merle Hay Road in Des Moines on July MAKING A FEW CHANGES Change is inevitable and something all effective leaders in education and the workplace should embrace to create a better product for students and customers. Change is all around us in the way we promote our programs and engage our students. With this focus in mind, the IALL/ABE Planning Committee has been busy putting together an excellent lineup of break-out sessions and keynote/capstone speakers that will entice all aspects of education. Change also has taken place in the format of this year s conference. Not only is IALL joining forces with the Adult Literacy Institute to hold this annual conference, but the format of the conference has also been tweaked. PRECONFERENCE SPEAKER In prior years, the preconference was held the day before the main event. This summer the preconference will be held on Thursday morning, July 15, and will feature Kathy Lynn Cooper, Adult Basic Education specialist for the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges. Cooper will speak on the I-Best Model Moving Basic Skills Learners Further and Faster. This session will explore new ways to give all adult learners the opportunity to succeed in post-secondary education and take their place in the economic mainstream. Cooper and her team will also present at break-out sessions throughout the conference. KEYNOTE SPEAKER Dr. Jayne Witte, associate professor of communication skills at the University of Northern Iowa, will kick off the conference as keynote speaker. Witte is also an organizational communica- tions specialist who provides speaking and training services to educational facilities, health care, business and industry, and sales/service organizations. Her content-rich presentation will give you the tools and strategies to energize your programs to become more creative and innovative. She will deliver her message in a fun, interactive, and fast-paced manner that will motivate you to make changes in the way you do business every day. Witte will also present at a breakout session. CONCURRENT TOPICS The concurrent sessions Thursday afternoon and Friday morning will offer a multitude of topics to interest all conference-goers from ABE instructors to coordinators and staff of continuing education programs. The biggest hurdle you will encounter will be deciding which session to attend! CAPSTONE SESSION The conference will conclude on Friday with capstone speaker Barry Moltz, who is a recognized expert on entrepreneurship and customer service and has appeared on CNN, CNBC, and WGN, as well as The Big Idea by Donny Deutsch. He will educate, entertain, and inspire you to survive these trying economic times and give you tips on how to do so. Moltz will demonstrate how to develop the resiliency to bounce through these cycles as well as provide you with secrets, formulas, and wisdom to grow both personally and professionally. You will return home re-charged to make the changes necessary to succeed. Mr. Moltz will also present a breakout session on customer service. A GREAT INVESTMENT If you have funds for only one conference a year due to budget constraints, make this conference be the one. You will have the opportunity to interact with your peers and learn new things to boot. For more information on the conference and to register, go to
