1 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 8, 2012 Contact: Joanetta Bolden, n4a Recognizes 44 Local Aging Programs with Aging Innovations and Achievement Awards Local Aging Services Seize Opportunities to Continue Providing Necessary Support Aging Americans Washington, DC Today, the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (n4a) today honored 44 aging programs from across the U.S. for developing initiatives to help older Americans remain independent in their homes and communities. n4a announced the 2012 recipients of its prestigious Aging Innovations and Achievement Awards at its Annual Conference, this year in Denver, CO. The awards program, sponsored by CST your Link to Life (CST-LTL), recognizes Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs) and Title VI Native American aging programs that have developed innovative initiatives to support older adults, persons with disabilities and family caregivers. In addition to receiving their award, honorees shared highlights of their programs with peers at the Conference, where over 500 Aging Network leaders gathered to discuss the key issues facing aging America. As the nation s older adult population continues to grow dramatically, we are going to need to develop more and more innovative strategies to address the needs of the 60+ population as well as to find new ways to utilize the many assets they possess. We are so pleased to be able to recognize and honor these innovative and successful programs and practices that are doing just that, said Sandy Markwood, n4a CEO. Our award winners are leaders in developing creative solutions, born out of the Aging Network s ongoing commitment to support the independence and wellbeing of older adults. We congratulate and thank each of these programs for being true models for the entire Aging Network. Thirty-four (34) programs received Aging Achievement Awards and 10 top-ranking programs were honored with Aging Innovations Awards. 2 All n4a members are eligible to submit award nominations. To qualify for an award, programs must be between one to five years in operation, receive minimal assistance from outside experts and, most critically, demonstrate innovative approaches in either offering new services or improving existing services. Award criteria include demonstration of measurable results, e.g., cost savings, improved client service and enhanced staff productivity. See the attached list of Aging Achievement Award recipients. n4a is the leading voice on aging issues for Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs) and a champion in our nation s capital for Title VI Native American aging programs. Through advocacy, training and technical assistance, n4a supports the national network of 629 AAAs and 246 Title VI programs. The fundamental mission of the AAAs and Title VI aging programs is to provide services that make it possible for older individuals to remain in their homes, thereby preserving their independence and dignity. These agencies coordinate and support a wide range of home and community-based services, including information and referral, home-delivered and congregate meals, transportation, employment services, senior centers, adult day care and long-term care ombudsman programs.
