Burdette, Jr., CDT and 2014 President Gary Iocco Congratulations to all of the 2015 NADL award winners. There are few greater honors than to be recognized by your peers for achievements in the profession that has meant so much to your life NADL President H a r o l d A. B u r d e t t e, J r., C D T Harold A. Burdette, Jr., CDT, is the CEO of Burdette Dental Lab, Inc., a Certified Dental Laboratory (CDL) in Birmingham, AL. He has served as Fiscal Officer of the National Board for Certification in Dental Laboratory Technology (NBC) and he has served on several of NADL s Committees including the Audit Committee, the Communications Advisory Board, the Budget & Finance Committee, and the Business Management Committee. Most recently, he has held the position of Treasurer and served as President-Elect in 2014 on the NADL Board of Directors. Mr. Burdette is a current board member with the CAL-LAB Group and an Advisor with the Southeastern Conference of Dental Laboratories. He holds a CDT specialty in every discipline except the Orthodontics and the Implants specialties NADL Awards

Friendship Dental Laboratory, Inc., CDL, is a full service laboratory specializing in full contour zirconia, e.max, implant solutions, and removable prosthetics. The company supports the future of the industry in many ways. Friendship has donated over $10,000 to the Foundation for Dental Laboratory Technology, with these funds going to grants and scholarships to provide education and opportunities to technicians, lab owners, and educators. 5 M e r i t f o r O u t s t a n d i n g A c h i e v e m e n t s Steve D. Killian, CDT Steve Killian is President and General Manager of Killian Dental Ceramics, a Certified Dental Laboratory (CDL) in Irvine, CA. Mr. Killian studied dental technology at Southern California College of Medical and Dental Careers and graduated in Soon after he joined with Glidewell Laboratories, CDL, and became a senior ceramist and general manager for two dental laboratories, El Toro Dental Ceramics and later Cal- West Dental Ceramics. With his growing interest and attention to premium aesthetics and quality, he opened his own laboratory in 1983 which continues today. Mr. Killian served on the NADL Board of Directors for four years, he is currently on the Board of Trustees for the Foundation for Dental Laboratory Technology and is the Fundraising Committee Chair, where he has really shined. He became certified in Ceramics in 1980 and has maintained his certification for 35 years. Personal Philosophy: As a Certified Dental Technician with 41 years experience, I have seen how dental technological improvements have advanced quality. The demanding nature of my specialties esthetic anterior restorations and implants has shaped my philosophy and perspective on dental restorative quality. This perspective influences my quest, for premium techniques and materials and their implementation in cooperative efforts with the dentist, to realize premium patient care NADL Awards 5

6 H a l l o f F a m e Henry Martin, CDT, TE Henry Martin is the President of Restorative Arts Dental Laboratory, a Certified Dental Laboratory (CDL) in Charleston, SC. He holds an associate s degree in dental laboratory technology from Trident Technical College/Medical University of South Carolina. Within our organizations, Mr. Martin has served in almost every role. He has served as Past Chair for the National Board for Certification in Dental Laboratory Technology, Past President of the National Association of Dental Laboratories, and is a Past Trustee for the Foundation for Dental Laboratory Technology. Restorative Arts Dental Laboratory, CDL, was one of the first Major Donor Labs to the Foundation and alone has pledged more than $13,000. Mr. Martin s leadership service to NADL began in the mid-1990 s. He has served on every committee NADL has, including over 15 years on the Budget and Finance Committee. Henry was one of the key individuals in the late 1990 s that identified financial issues that were facing NADL and NBC. As part of the non-board committee leadership at that time, he and several others took the bull by the horns to create a Special Task Force to turn the ship around, which included a financial reorganization of selling NADL s building in Alexandria, VA, developing financial benchmarks, and creating better protocols for board engagement, transparency and accountability. Mr. Martin is also involved in other associations within the dental laboratory technology industry, having been a Past President of the South Carolina Dental Laboratory Association as well as the Southeastern Conference of Dental Laboratories. He is also co-founder and Past Chair of the Eastern Conference of Dental Laboratories, a regional meeting cohosted by the North Carolina and South Carolina Dental Laboratory Associations. This is now the second largest meeting in the Southeast. In addition to membership in organizations listed above, he holds memberships in the Louisiana State Dental Laboratory Association, American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, American College of Prosthodontics, and the Academy of Osseointegration. Henry has dedicated so much to the betterment of our profession and our organizations. He is a true champion for NADL, NBC and the Foundation. I can t think of anyone more deserving of this honor. 7 V i s i o n The Vision Award is being presented to these individuals for having the concept to create the Race for the Future. This was a fundraiser held by The Foundation for Dental Laboratory Technology in conjunction with an ITU Triathlon in Chicago, Illinois. Through this event, over $30,000 was raised, allowing The Foundation to provide more scholarships and grants to individuals and educational institutions. Valerie Berger Valerie Berger works at Aegis Communications as the Vice President of the Laboratory Division. Her responsibilities include brand development and leadership for their print and digital magazines, tradeshows, webinars, and other custom projects. Ms. Berger graduated from Ohio State University with a bachelor s degree in Advertising/Business. Pam Johnson Pam Johnson works at Aegis Communications as the Editor-in-Chief for the Inside Dental Technology magazine. She sets and maintains the editorial direction for the publication to ensure the value of the brand to readership and sponsors. Ms. Johnson graduated from Eastern Illinois University with a bachelor s degree in English Education. Stuart Steinbock Stuart Steinbock is the Vice President of Business Development at Whip Mix Corporation, where he focuses on new business opportunities for the company. He was previously active in the company s strategic planning and new product opportunities with a focus on dental technology. Mr. Steinbock graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a bachelor s degree in Marketing and Management and went on to earn an IMBA, International Master of Business Administration degree, from the University of Louisville NADL Awards 7

8 C D T o f t h e Y e a r Dan R. Elfring, Master CDT, TE Dan Elfring has been in the dental laboratory profession for 36 years and currently works as the in-house technician at Pickle Prosthodontics in Colorado Springs, CO. Mr. Elfring joined the Air Force in 1978 and received his laboratory training while in the service. He culminated his 28-year career as the most senior lab technician in the Air Force, Chief Master Sergeant, and was selected as the Dental Senior NCO of the Year during his time. He earned his associate s degree in Dental Laboratory Technology, a bachelor s degree in Management, and then earned two master s degrees; one in Business Administration from the University of Phoenix and one in Human Resource Management from Webster University. In his capacity at work, Mr. Elfring manages all aspects of operating the lab from scheduling case workload, ordering supplies, training ancillary staff, to equipment maintenance. On top of everything that he does for his day-to-day job, he also donates countless hours to furthering the industry. Mr. Elfring worked with NBC helping to develop the Implant specialty and was selected in 2010 to assist NBC in updating the Job Task Analysis. This past year, he sponsored a team during the Chicago ITU World triathlon, which raised funds for the Foundation for Dental Laboratory Technology. Most recently, Mr. Elfring was selected as one of five speakers at Spectrum dialogue s Techno- Clinical Day in Chicago in February He is a past board member for the Colorado Dental Laboratory Association and has been given numerous other awards and recognitions. Outside of volunteering for the betterment of the DLT industry, Mr. Elfring has also been very involved in community service. He volunteered at the Colorado Mission of Mercy, helping make 53 appliances for the underprivileged. He worked with Donated Dental Services, completing laboratory work for two fullmouth complex rehabilitation cases. Mr. Elfring was first certified through NBC in 1995, in the Crown & Bridge specialty and was then awarded the Technologist designation in Since then, he has gone on to earn multiple specialties including Complete Dentures, Implants, and Partial Dentures. Just this past October, he became certified in Ceramics to earn the title of Master CDT! This year, we are excited to acknowledge Dan R. Elfring as the 2015 CDT of the Year! NADL Awards
