REINSURANCE (Vote for up to three candidates) Timothy S. Paris Katrina Spillane Michael Kaster Evan F. Rauch Jing Lang Alberto A. Abalo
Timothy S. Paris, FSA, MAAA Chief Executive Officer, Ruark Consulting LLC Simsbury, CT I am Chief Executive Officer at Ruark, which provides actuarial consulting and reinsurance brokerage and related services to insurance company clients. Much of our work centers on the annuity industry, where we have approximately 70% of the variable and indexed annuity markets participating in our ongoing industry experience studies of mortality and elective policyholder behavior. On the reinsurance brokerage side, Ruark has placed and continues to administer dozens of bespoke annuity treaties totaling over $1.5 billion of reinsurance premium. My role is to lead Ruark to continue to provide our clients with timely and insightful analytics, along with creative and practical risk management solutions for some of their most challenging and high profile problems. Prior to joining Ruark in 2009, I was an officer at several insurance companies, with responsibilities that included product management, pricing, valuation, expense management, financial reporting, and asset-liability management. Throughout my career, I have enjoyed leadership roles in the development of innovative retirement savings and protection products. I am a frequent speaker at industry events on the topics of longevity and mortality risk management and policyholder behavior. My work and commentary have appeared in National Underwriter, Investment News, American Banker, Annuity News, Retirement Income Journal, Insurance Risk, The Actuary, Reinsurance News, and Risk Management. I have been a Contributing Editor for The Actuary magazine, and through our company blog I am a contributing member of the Society of Actuaries online outreach team for the SOA Riskpertise website. I am also a member of Insurance Ireland's Business Advisory Panel. I am a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries, and a graduate of the University of Connecticut, where I earned a BS in Mathematics with high honors. Society of Actuaries Experience (Section and committee memberships and participation) I recently served a two-year term on the Editorial Board for SOA s magazine, The Actuary. I am currently a member of SOA Policyholder Behavior in the Tail risk management working group. I am a long time member of the Reinsurance Section, and I would like to take a leadership role to expand on the long and successful history of traditional reinsurance techniques in the life and annuity markets to champion the development, consideration, and utilization of creative data-driven reinsurance techniques to help companies better manage the array of complex risks they are facing in their product lines, many of which have emerged in recent years with new product types in large volumes. New structures, methodologies, and counterparties are needed to directly address these risks prospectively, such as longevity risk for individual annuity guarantees and pensions, and elective policyholder behavior risks (surrenders, partial withdrawals, premium persistency, etc.) for a wide range of long-term life and annuity products.
Katrina Spillane, FSA, MAAA AVP-Pricing, Canada Life Reinsurance Blue Bell, PA In 2010, I began my current role as head of the US Structured Life Reinsurance Pricing department for Canada Life Reinsurance. In that position, I supervise a staff of five and oversee the pricing of all US structured life products while meeting internal guidelines and achieving our client s goals. Prior to that, I spent my first few years at Canada Life Re developing and pricing structured life reinsurance solutions for all types of life, health, disability and annuity products. I have been with Canada Life Re since While at Canada Life Re, I also spent time in the traditional life reinsurance pricing department where I gained invaluable experience about the traditional life market. My background also includes positions in financial reporting, annuity pricing and cash flow testing for direct insurers. Society of Actuaries Experience (Section and committee memberships and participation) Section member of: Financial Reporting, Health, International, Product Development, Reinsurance, Smaller Insurance Company Presenter at the 2015 Health Meeting Volunteer grader for the Final Assessment for multiple years With over 15 years of reinsurance experience, I believe I will bring a unique skill set to the Reinsurance Section. I ve seen many different reasons for entering into reinsurance, ranging from reinsurance for capital management purposes to traditional mortality reinsurance. And since the reinsurance that is priced in my department covers multiple areas of practice, I have a wide breadth of product knowledge. I look forward to sharing my experiences with my peers and I hope to gain knowledge from other members of the section. Michael Kaster, FSA, MAAA Senior Vice President Life Solutions Group Leader Willis Re New York, NY Mike is based in the New York office of Willis Re as the leader of the Life Solutions Group (LSG). An experienced life actuary, Mike has extensive experience in life, annuity and LTC reinsurance, which leverages his years of experience in capital management, insurance product and risk pricing and valuation. He joined Willis Re in early During his time at Willis, he has led the efforts to expand the reinsurance brokerage business into the growing asset-intensive life reinsurance business. LSG, under his leadership, has executed reinsurance transactions in life insurance, deferred fixed annuities, indexed annuities and long term care. He has also led engagements around several other closed block life and annuity businesses and more recently in the variable annuity reinsurance space. With over 30 years of experience in the overall life insurance market, Mike has held senior positions for major direct life insurance companies including Conseco, Allstate International, Irish Life and Lincoln National. He has also held senior consulting and managing principal positions with Watson Wyatt and his own consulting company, Kaster Actuarial Resources.
Society of Actuaries Experience (Section and committee memberships and participation) Mike has been very active in several industry leadership roles, including serving on three different section councils over the last 10 years. He previously was on the Reinsurance Section Council from 10/2011-9/2014, the Marketing and Distribution Section Council from 10/2008-9/2011 (serving as Chair in 2011) and the Product Development Section Council from 10/2005-9/2008. In addition to his SOA activity, he has also written several articles in the industry and presented at dozens of industry meetings. He also has served time with the Actuarial Foundation and the American Academy s Life Products Council. Reinsurance is what I do. It is something I have had as a part of my professional responsibilities for many, many years. Now as a reinsurance intermediary and advisor, I am working to help many clients deal with some of the more challenging of reinsurance opportunities. I am very well connected with reinsurers and ceding companies alike, and I would like to leverage my years of section experience for another three years in helping the Reinsurance Section move forward for the benefit of our members. In particular, during my previous time with the RSC, I have started a new set of educational seminars on Reinsurance, to help our members become more knowledgeable around reinsurance issues. I would welcome the opportunity to keep this programs going and growing for our members. Evan F. Rauch, FSA Director, Reinsurance Strategy Sun Life Financial Wellesley Hills, MA I have mainly worked in reinsurance since my student rotation in reinsurance at The New England from 1993 to I came to Sun Life s U.S. home office in 1995 and worked in annuity valuation in my final years as a student and first years as a fellow, including some responsibility for analyzing potential reinsurance deals and for administering reinsurance treaties. In 2000, I began working on the company s U.S. participating whole life line and also played a major role in the company s individual life reinsurance. In 2007, I moved into a full-time reinsurance position, although I eventually became involved in experience studies as well. Society of Actuaries Experience (Section and committee memberships and participation) Exam supervisor for many years. I think it s important for direct companies to have representation on the council. I have an unusually broad perspective because I have worked on reinsurance for individual life, group life, group health, and annuities. I have also worked on a number of international arrangements as well as some internal treaties. My reinsurance responsibilities have also been quite broad in that I have been involved in the whole process from the direct company side, from analyzing previous experience to writing the requests for proposals to answering the reinsurer questions to negotiating the terms of the deals to writing the actual contracts and finally monitoring the experience associated with the treaty.
Jing Lang, FSA, ACIA Assistant Vice President, Swiss Re Toronto, ON Previous: Retirement consulting (3 years); Valuation/Reserving with Swiss Re (3.5 years) Current: Business Development with Swiss Re Society of Actuaries Experience (Section and committee memberships and participation) Friend of the Council under the Product Development Section Presented at the 2015 LAS As a recently qualified FSA working in a non-traditional actuarial role, I can bring a fresh perspective in what the section can do to increase its visibility in the overall financial industry.
