Mode of Instruction and Participant s Evaluation The following strategies will be used for effective instruction Lectures Demonstrations and Discussions Hands on practice sessions Assignments Local visits to other organizations, who are using GIS extensively Field visits and outstation visit to eminent organizations working in the field of GIS, like the IIT, IRS, Anna University, French Institute of Pondicherry, Survey of India, MIDAS, Mahendra World City.. Conference and workshop The following strategies will be used for effective performance evaluation of participants Evaluation of assignments Evaluation of Hands on practice Paper presentation in the conference Workshop output Evaluation of Project work and subsequent presentations The participants will be evaluated using the above strategies and the process of evaluation itself will be used as a tool for learning

4 COURSE PROFILE The spatial information originates from geographical representations such as maps and pictures taken from satellites or aerial photography. With rich tradition of mapping, a large number of maps today exist with different organizations across the country at various scales right up to specific cadastral survey number. The practice of using these maps, however, follows traditional methods. A major constraint with analog form of maps arises from its rigid format which prohibits the use of data in different ways. Also, overlay of maps is either not feasible or is a complicated process. There is also enormous wealth of spatial information in the country through pictures taken from aerial and satellite based platforms. A number of satellites spanning around the globe provide spatial digital data for various needs such as meteorology, land resources etc with very high resolution imageries providing minute details of the terrain. Utilization of such data requires geo referencing of images through maps developed with accurate geographical control points. The spatial data development, hence, has to consider use of maps generated by survey procedures and update of the same using emerging technologies. Advent of digitization of maps has revolutionized the cartographic representations. Here, the main advantage lies in the flexibility of representation, with layers of map, a capability that allows interactive experimentation, editing and overlays. The emphasis from map making in recent years has shifted to spatial digital database derived from precise navigation, imaging satellites, aircraft and transactional database. As technology incorporates ease of data manipulation and resolves complexities, GIS has been making tremendous impact in business. In the present day context, any project or activity is geo referenced and it has to be executed taking into consideration, the physical constraints, the influencing conditions along with the time constraint in an economical way. With the advent of computers, appropriate algorithms and software packages, Geographical Informational Systems (GIS) has evolved as an efficient management or Decision making tool. The usefulness of this tool is enormously felt by engineers, scientists, managers, trainers, teachers, policy makers, administrators and executers. Many a times, appropriate decision making is the crucial aspect in any project or activity. Wrong decisions lead to wrong results. This tool and technique of GIS really assists the above category of people in appropriate decision making in their endeavour. The rapid developments taking place in the field of GIS in terms of efficient use of software packages, modelling and presentation techniques, examining alternative solutions and arriving

5 at appropriate decisions for e governance, has created a dire need for the training of personnel of the above category. Identifying this need, NITTTR Chennai has established a GIS laboratory, wherein, training programmes to technical teachers, scientists, engineers, administrators, trainers and policy makers drawn from engineering colleges, polytechnics, universities, government departments, industries and companies have been organized, through short term and modular programs. The GIS concepts have also been introduced in the specific module in the overseas teachers programmes conducted by this institute in the areas of Environmental Management and sustainable development. Instructional materials in the form of appropriate learning tools, graded exercises, video lessons and project exercises have already been developed and validated. The institute has also been executing identified projects using GIS techniques in urban management, environmental management and that of water resources. With a good feedback from participants attending these training programs, the endeavour continues at the state, regional, national levels and presently the institute proposes to extend this training program to the international target audience, as a full time program for the year
