1 Delivering Triple-Play Services via a Converged Network: A Triple-Play Solution Guide Overview As new technologies become mature and the expectations of bandwidth and advanced services requested from customers become more and more demanding, nowadays, service providers, cable operators or even utility companies of various scales face fierce competitions from providers that offer new business models and highly differentiated services with lower price. The increasing demands for bandwidth-intensive applications such as Voice over IP (VoIP), video on demand (VOD) and high-speed internet have intensified the importance of network scalability, flexibility and reliability. Therefore, for operators of various kinds, it has become less cost-effective to run diverse services in different networks since this not only makes the network not scalable at all, but also increases operational cost needed to maintain the network. On the other hand, for customers that have already subscribed to differentiated services delivered via a mixture of copper, fiber or cable TV, customers satisfaction and loyalty to a service provider may be minimized if they need to pay for different service providers for different services they used. Therefore, with the maturity of new technologies and the shift of circuit-switched network to IP-based one, transporting multiple services via a single and converged network infrastructure becomes an inevitable and dominant trend. To address requirements from new technologies and accommodate demands from ever-increasing customers expectations, distributing multiple services over a converged network becomes crucial and pivotal to sustain the business. Generally, the multiple services or triple-play services in particular consist of telephony, HDTV-based IPTV, and high-speed internet service which are delivered via a single infrastructure such as xdsl or FTTX to a large number of residential bases. With the popularity of next generation network (NGN), the delivery of triply-play services via IP netowrk is one of the most suitable and cost-effective choices for both service providers and broadband providers 1

2 since this infrasturcture will guarantee that the network infrastructure and services are separated and configured by independent service. In other words, IP packeted network can make the network more scalable and provide flexibility for future mainteannce such as using auto-provisioning service. The deployments of triple-play services offer multiple benefits that include: Delivery of multiple services such as data, voice, video, WiFi (Quadruple play service) over one single infrastructure Flexible scalability for future upgrade and maintenance Prioritize real-time streaming services such as video, voice and allocate bandwidth to specific applications to optimize quality of user experience (QoE). 5 Triple-Play Services over Closed Network In the network topology described below, the service provider who is also the network owner can offer various content-oriented services such as IPTV/Video services, VoIP Telephony services and high-speed Internet services to end users via Metro Ethernet Network. In the access site, the layer 2 switches such FOS-3126-PLUS, FOS-2128G can be used to inter-connect s at the remote site.
