MBA students are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner, both in the classroom and outside the classroom. A significant part of the learning process comes from classroom discussion. Students are expected to participate in classroom discussion. Students are also expected to respect other students participation in discussions. Students will avoid disruptive or discourteous behavior such as coming to class late, returning from breaks late, interrupting students while they are speaking, or not paying attention to other students while they are speaking or making presentations.
6 Criticism and debate are important components of classroom discussion. As such, MBA students will display constructive criticism of others views and not engage in personal attacks. Debate will be professional and centered on the subject matter. The classroom portion of the learning experience is dependent on the contribution of individual members to the group. Absence(s) of a student reduces the learning experience of all students. Each syllabus will specify course expectations including evaluation, attendance, and participation. Grade Appeals Policy A grade appeals policy has been developed for graduate students. The policy is located in the graduate catalog, which can be located online at Academic Honesty Heidelberg University s academic policy, covering all students, can be found in the student handbook. The student handbook can be accessed online at FIELD STUDY Field Study is a set of two capstone courses in the MBA program. The courses are designed to test skills developed throughout the program. In addition to the business knowledge developed in the program, field study will test students ability to collaborate, solve problems, communicate, and conduct research. Field study is an unstructured learning environment where students take charge of the project and faculty guide students toward successful completion. One of the goals of field study is to provide quality research and problem solving to a real problem being faced by a company or organization. Students are encouraged to discuss the possibility of offering this service to their employer or an organization with which they are affiliated. Priority for field study projects will be given to employers or organizations affiliated with current students and alumni. WRITING STANDARDS Heidelberg University s MBA program is writing intensive. Most classes will require written case analysis, some individually and some in groups. Each professor will disclose writing standards and grading rubrics within their syllabus. ASSESSMENT TESTING Assessment testing takes place at several points throughout the MBA program. Heidelberg University utilizes assessment testing to measure the learning outcomes of the program. Students will complete a Peregrine Academic Services pre- assessment test at the start of the MBA program, and a post- assessment test during capstone courses. The Peregrine assessment tests are delivered online and are completed outside of class.
7 Assessment testing of writing and oral presentation skills will also take place during the capstone courses. These assessments will be completed with the input of various program stakeholders. ASSOCIATIONS AND STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS The Heidelberg University MBA program has several associations for the benefit of current and former students. The MBA Alumni Association organizes events with the purpose of providing networking opportunities for both alumni and current students. The MBA Student Association gives students a chance to further their leadership skills. Leaders of this organization are charged with organizing events which provide networking opportunities for current students and Heidelberg University undergraduates. This group also provides students with an opportunity to deliver program feedback to MBA administrators. The MBA program has ombudsmen who periodically conduct anonymous student surveys to provide program feedback to MBA administrators. The ombudsmen also provide an opportunity for students to anonymously air grievances. The ombudsmen are alumni Stephanie Goller and Chris Patrick. Stephanie s address is stephaniepratt98@hotmail.com. Chris s address is Christopher- patrick@live.com STUDENT HONORS AND AWARDS Each spring MBA faculty and administration meet to discuss the awarding of MBA Student of the Year. The award is in recognition of exemplary scholarship and leadership in pursuit of the MBA degree. Two criteria are used to select recipients of this award. 1. High academic scholarship at the MBA level. 2. Demonstrated leadership consistent with the philosophy of the Heidelberg MBA program. Leadership can take a number of forms, such as: a willingness of the student to share their findings with other students beyond the typical in- class requirements of presentations and discussions; sharing their professional knowledge with other students in a class; taking a leadership role external to the class that benefits the MBA program; bringing fresh insights or approaches to the class. CAREER SUPPORT Heidelberg University provides career support services to graduate students through the Owen Academic and Career Support Center. Their web site is located at DISCLOSURE This handbook is designed to help students quickly find information specific to Heidelberg University s MBA program. In the case of discrepancies, The Graduate Catalog and student handbook take
