4 EMERGENCY CLOSINGS In the event of severe weather or other types of emergencies, check the College s homepage (www2.stockton.edu) for updates on closings. Area radio stations oftentimes announce the status of the college. The school identification numbers are 913 and 2913 for day and evening classes, respectively. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The MSCP is built around a solid core of six required technical courses that provide common baseline knowledge for all students. This core is supplemented by four electives selected according to an individual s specialty area. Finally, two supervised research experiences (each worth 3 credits) are undertaken. In combination, the core, electives and research form a curriculum that can easily adapt to the needs of individual students and to the nation s growing modeling and simulation requirements. The goal of the two-semester capstone research experience in collaboration with a faculty mentor is the production of a publication in a quality journal. The program is structured to be completed in as little as two years and emphasizes substantial flexibility in course scheduling (e.g. night classes, hybrid traditional/distance learning). Undergraduate students interested in a five-year BS / MSCP accelerated dual degree option can pursue that option from their first semester at Stockton; transfer students are also eligible PROGRAM OBJECTIVES IBM estimate that two and a half million terabytes of data are created every day. This is the equivalent of over 300 million HD movies! Ninety percent of the world s data was generated in just the past two years. Data is created by: individuals (through social networks and smartphones); machines (through real-time, network connected, sensors the internet of things ); business and commerce (e.g. transaction records); science (e.g. bioinformatics, large scale simulation). Much of this data is real time and georeferenced through GPS. Making sense of this vast sea of data for the use and benefit of society is considered an imperative of the coming years, indeed many companies are already strategizing for big data. Computational or data scientists develop solutions for gathering, cleaning, archiving, analyzing and visualizing data for the purposes of making informed decisions. Some examples of data science projects include: Business: Use historical discounting data from a department chain store at fifty locations to predict how sales vary with department. Entertainment: Perform a sentiment analysis on the tweets about summer blockbuster movies sentiments and use to predict box office takings. History: Develop a geospatial database of conflicts occurring during the Scottish Wars of Independence ( ) Science: Analyze the jpg images of one million galaxies to categorize them according to their morphology. Health: Predict disease likelihood by exploring and correlating patient case history and genetic databases. 4

5 Criminal Justice: Gather and visualize real time crime statistics for a city for efficient resource deployment. Education: Create a web based dashboard for describing student performance metrics across a school district. Our program accentuates applied work where in-class assignments are supplemented by research projects and internships at local industry to provide for a smooth transition into either a professional or research career. THE CURRICULUM The self-standing Master s degree program consists of 36 credit hours (12 graduate courses) that can be completed in full-time or part-time study. Full-time study would typically require at least two years. Master s degree students are bound by the academic progress requirements of the College s graduate school, covered earlier in this Graduate Bulletin. All courses are for 3 graduate credits. Four core courses CPLS 5101 Data structures and analysis CPLS 5102 Data gathering and warehousing CPLS 5103 Data Visualization CPLS 5301 Data Practicum I Six additional courses from elective curriculum CPLS 5201 Pervasive computing CPLS 5202 Machine Learning CPLS 5203 Case studies in analytics CPLS 5204 Data storytelling CPLS 5302 Data Practicum II CPLS 5303 Data Practicum III Two Required Research Courses: CPLS 5800/5900 Research Project/Internship PROGRAM COMPLETION TIMELINE Students must complete all aspects of the program within six years of matriculation, not including time spent on school-approved leave of absence. Please see the Graduate Bulletin for details on the leave of absence policy. Students who do not complete all of their graduate work over the six years of matriculation will be dismissed from the program. 5

6 THE TWO-COURSE RESEARCH SEQUENCE (CPLS 5800/5900) Introduction Each MSCP graduate is required to undertake a two-semester research sequence with an MSCP or MSCP-affiliated faculty member. This research project shall include a significant contribution to a field of knowledge in computational science and a manuscript meeting the guidelines. The project may be a research project on a specific subject. Each student will also be required to present the results of his/her work in a Computational Science Seminar to his/her advisor and undertake an oral examination or defense of the work. Paper and electronic copies of the project write-up shall be submitted to the MSCP coordinator for his/her records. It is the goal (although it is not a formal requirement) that the manuscript will be submitted to a journal. Students are advised to initiate discussions about their project by the end of their second semester at the latest and then select an advisor for them in the third semester. A grade of In progress will be assigned until the project is completed and graded by the faculty advisor on the project. Only full time MSCP faculty members may advise student projects. In the event that a student works with another advisor outside of the MSCP faculty, an MSCP faculty member must cosign as an advisor to the project. By special arrangement it is possible that this two-semester research sequence may be undertaken as an industry sponsored internship. In this arrangement the student would work on a project with their employer which has a significant computational component. In this arrangement there would also be an industry advisor and an MSCP faculty advisor. The MSCP faculty advisor's evaluation of the project is determinative. The same standards of documentation and presentation will be held. ACADEMIC HONESTY Academic honesty is a very serious issue. All students enrolled in graduate courses at The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey are required to follow all College policies including the Academic Honesty Policy specified in the College Bulletin. Unless specifically designated otherwise, all work is expected to be the student s own, independent effort. When in doubt about how to complete an assignment properly, students need to consult with the appropriate faculty member. All students should familiarize themselves with the Academic Honesty policy. Research and Ethics If faculty and/or student research or scholarship involves contact with human or animal subjects, the research project requires pre-approval from the college s Institutional Review Board (IRB) before conducting the research. In addition to the IRB guidelines, Stockton s criminal justice faculty and students must adhere to the Academy of Criminal Justice Science s code of ethics regarding research. 6

7 AWARDS AT GRADUATION Students who graduate with a 4.0 GPA will receive the Dean s Award. Program distinction is awarded to students who end with a GPA greater than 3.5 and who receive the grade of A for both thesis courses. GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIPS Graduate assistantships are available on a semester basis. The number of credits awarded will be determined by MSCP program faculty in consultation with the Dean of the School of Graduate and Continuing Studies. A graduate assistantship requires 1-4 hours of service per week for each credit of waived tuition. The tuition waiver is granted for graduate courses in which a student is enrolled during the semester that an assistantship is held. Interested students need to submit a letter of interest, their resume, and the graduate assistantship application form (found on the Graduate Studies website or obtained from the Graduate Director) to the Graduate Director no later than October 31 for spring semesters and March 31 for fall semesters. Notifications will go out in early December for spring and late April for the fall. ACADEMIC PROGRESS/DISMISSAL All MSCP students must maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0. Students whose cumulative GPA falls below 3.0 during any semester are placed on probation and given one additional semester (limited to 9 credits) to raise their GPA. Failure to raise the GPA to 3.0 or higher will lead to dismissal from the program. 7
