14 Case Analysis Methodologies Persuasion, Argument, and the Case Method Persuasion, the art of convincing an audience to believe, think, or act as the speaker or writer wants them to Unless you are a subject expert, don t tell me what you think Most professors are less interested in the position a student takes than on how well they can prove it What Is a Case? A business case imitates or simulates a real situation, including irrelevancies, sideshows, misconceptions, and little information or an overwhelming amount of it

15 Case Analysis Methodologies Types of Cases Problems Define the problem, define root causes, fix it with relevant tools of the specialized business disciplines decisions Decision options (alternatives), decision criteria, relevant evidence No objectively correct decision, a good decision creates more benefits than alternatives and has fewer or less severe downsides evaluations Express a judgment about the worth, value, or effectiveness of a performance, act, or outcome Appropriate criteria, expresses a fit between evidence and criteria, includes both positive and negative sides (strengths/weaknesses) Rules When rules depend on assumptions, the values chosen for them require an argument (accounting and finance)

16 Case Analysis Methodologies How to Analyze a Case 1. (5) Situation decision, evaluation, problem, or rule 2. (15) Questions what do I need to know about the situation 3. (45) Hypothesis through close study, what seems most plausible to you 4. (40) Proof and Action What evidence do I have to support the hypothesis, what additional evidence do I need 5. (15) Alternatives What s the greatest weakness of the hypothesis, or what is the strongest alternative. (Don t wait for others to point this out)
