5 NON-PROFIT SPECIALIST HIGH SKILLS MAJOR (SHSM) Project 2One: Social Justice and Equity Through International Development In order to meet the growing demands for workers in the Non-Profit industry, students will be required to possess 21 st Century skills such as critical thinking, empathy, leadership and teamwork. These skills will ensure that students are prepared to meet the employment demands as well as prepare students for post-secondary pathways within the Non- Profit sector such as: Community and Justice Services, Human Resources, Project Management, Public Relations, Environmental Ethics, International Development Studies, Management/Leadership and Public Speaking. Stephen Lewis Secondary School is excited to offer this unique program that focuses on Social Justice and Equity through International Development. Students will have the opportunity to be immersed in rich life changing experiences that will build empathy and awareness, important attributes for 21 st Century global citizens. Our community partners such as Right to Play and the Stephen Lewis Foundation acknowledge and support this program through their commitment to experiential learning, certifications and exciting reach ahead opportunities. In order to complete an SHSM in Non-Profit students are required to: 1. Complete a bundle of 9 specific courses (see chart below); 2. Complete Sector Certifications and/or training programs; 3. Participate in experiential learning and career exploration activities within the sector (e.g. co-op work experience, job shadowing, job twinning); 4. Learn and document the industry Essential Skills and work habits using the Ontario Skills Passport; 5. Gain Reach Ahead experience connected to the student s post secondary plans.
