Fashion Show Artwork Kat Feva Fashion Design Volume 1, Issue 1 Q. What are your career plans after school? A. I'd like to work for a large fashion brand first and learn the ropes hands on, then eventually start my own line/boutique. Q. When do you anticipate graduating from MCC? A. Most likely next semester, Fall Q. Your declared major in the program? A. Fashion Design. Q. You are currently a member with any organizations? A. Fashion Focus Club & Phi Theta Kappa. This semester with the fashion show, I didn't take on anything extra, but next semester I fully intend to join Honors Take Action. Q. Do you have a current fashion related job? A. I do currently have a fashion related job as an intern at Hapari Swimwear, it's an enriching opportunity that I got because of MCC. I learn new things everyday about the complexities of running a line and I'm really appreciative of the hands on experience. Q. Anything else that you would like to add? A. Just that I can't wait to use my print designs from CAD class in my senior collection. Everyone should really take advantage of their time with the CAD Software, it s very important to have that skill. take your education outside the walls of the classroom in order to gain valuable fashion experiences. Be ambitious and take advantage of numerous academic opportunities! Consider: internships, job shadowing, study abroad, attending career days, entering competitions, traveling to fashion market centers, joining student organizations like Fashion Focus Club, and most of all fashion related work experience. Each of these opportunities is resume worthy and makes for a wellrounded education. Meet with Evonne, Lori or Kim to assist you with your academic career plans. Join Phi Theta Kappa organization if you hold a 3.5 GPA or better for more scholarship opportunities and for their accreditation. Job Shadow & Internship

I am a member of the fashion focus club and will be joining Phi Theta Kappa next month. Q. What professional organizations are you a member of? A. I am a former member of IATSE (The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees) from my days as a wardrobe and wig supervisor on Broadway tours. I am also interested in joining the Phoenix Fashion Group. Q. Do you have a current fashion related job? A. I work for the Last Chance clearance division of Nordstrom as a lead pricer. I also freelance every now and then as a costume or wig designer for live theatre. Q. What are you doing with your internship now? A. I am currently at the Phoenix Art Museum as a curatorial intern of fashion design. I am involved in the upcoming Hollywood Costume Exhibition and also assisting with an Oscar gown exhibit. A typical day could include research for the exhibit, storing garments in the fashion vault, dressing a mannequin and helping with installation of an exhibit. Last week I helped deliver Amy Adams Academy Award dress to a photo shoot. Every week is different and exciting. Denita Sewell the fashion curator and her assistant Casey have been so kind and helpful. Every week I learn so much from them. It is a very hands on internship. They treat me very well and value my opinions and ideas. I am so lucky to have received this opportunity. There are two of us in the department and we beat out 50 other students from schools across the state. I am very proud to represent MCC. Q. Who have you met so far during your internship? A. I have met Denita Sewell the curator of fashion design and her assistant curator Casey. Last week I was invited by them to attend a benefit luncheon at the museum where I was fortunate to have met Jon Stevens, Visual Director for Barneys Fashion Square. I also got to meet Ken Dowling who is a well known photographer and works on most of the fashion departments advertising photos. Next month I will be introduced to Deborah Landis curator of the Hollywood Costume Exhibit and original costume designer of the Indiana Jones movies. Denita is great about having me network with as many people as possible. I am taking advantage of every opportunity.
4 Page 4 COURSE HIGHTLIGHT of the month: TEC 125 Design This course is the foundation course for Fashion Design majors that means you should be taking this course with sewing classes your first semester, along with other design foundation courses such as TEC 110, 111, or 105 and any of the mini-skill classes in the TEC 113, 114, 115 series. Design & Product Development In this course you will explore worldwide fashion centers, learn about design & manufacturing specialties and develop a portfolio of your own designs. The course is comprehensive in that it will cover all aspects of the design process. It will be challenging, creative and fun. *a page from her collection in her portfolio Portfolio Collection: Gold Mint Ladies Eveningwear Apparel Crystal moved to Chicago and is interviewing for design positions.
5 Page 5 COURSE HIGHLIGHT of the Month: TEC 109 Intro to Fashion Merchandising Buyer, Merchandiser This course is the foundation course for all Fashion Merchandising majors that means you should be taking this course first, before other TEC merchandising courses. It is the perfect class to take your first semester at MCC along with general education classes like ENG 101 and a math class. This course is an exploration of contemporary fashion careers learning what the fashion industry does and then finding the perfect career within the industry. Merchandising includes such careers as a retail fashion buyer, visual display manager, store manager, special events coordinator and social media manager. We also often work in design through the process called product development and help develop private label merchandise. In today's world of the internet and instant media almost everyone has some kind of fashion knowledge. You will be able to formalize what you already know into real world business concepts used by executives in the industry. You will discover how the fashion cycle predicts what will become the newest trends or decide what is on its way out. You study consumer behavior and just how the industry keeps us shopping. In the business side of the industry we examine traditional store and manufacturing while adding all the newest online businesses showing you how to become a fashion entrepreneur.
