Helsinki and its intriguing districts offer plenty to see and do throughout the year. Every week is packed with a variety of events, from the fine arts to music and sports to exhibitions. More information about Helsinki and its main attractions in 11 languages can be found in the Helsinki Visitors Guide. Pick it up from the Tourist Information or download at: The coastal city of Helsinki has earned a reputation as a pocket-sized and modern metropolis where visitors can enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. Eastern and western influences from the past 460 years can be seen everywhere. With these tips you can visit Helsinki s versatile urban districts outside the city centre. Suomenlinna Suomenlinna is one of the world s largest historical maritime fortresses and home to 850 city residents. With its museums, restaurants and events, the islands of Suomenlinna offer a unique experience for visitors of all ages throughout the year. Suomenlinna has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since The 15-minute ferry crossing to the fortress offers you a unique chance to admire and photograph Helsinki from the sea. Seurasaari Seurasaari is a popular museum island and recreational area located 15 minutes by bus from the city centre. The wooden buildings at the Open-Air Museum represent Finnish building traditions from the 18th to the 20th centuries. During the summer season various workshops and events at the museum present traditional handicrafts, customs, folklore and folk dancing. Kaivopuisto & nearby islands Kaivopuisto is Helsinki s oldest and most popular park, as well as a prestigious embassy district. The proximity of the sea, the rocky cliffs and the green lawns offer many opportunities to relax and enjoy the outdoors. Along the shore and on the nearby islands you can find several cafés and summer restaurants. Take a ferry to Uunisaari Island off the southern shore of Kaivopuisto Park or to Pihlajasaari Island and find sandy beaches and convenient services, attracting summer holidaymakers to swim and picnic. Kallio The former working-class district of Kallio is one of the most characteristic parts of Helsinki. Favoured these days by artists and students, the district s bohemian bars and trendy boutiques attract visitors with a sense of adventure. Visit also the over 100-year-old Hakaniemi Market Hall and its outdoor market, where you will find everything from groceries and flowers to clothing and handicrafts for sale. Arabia The area of Arabia is a modern centre for the sciences, design and the arts, as well as a waterfront residential district. Home of the School of Art and Design and the 130-year-old Arabia porcelain factory, museum and gallery, Arabia continues to be a pioneer in modern Scandinavian design. Helsinki s attractive and unique character comes not only from its colorful past but also from its proximity to the sea, which offers an endless number of exciting activities. The city s many green parks are popular gathering places for visitors and residents alike. Forest is also nearby and can be easily reached during a daytrip. The fresh sea air, beautiful parks and excellent recreational facilities in Helsinki offer you unlimited possibilities to enjoy healthy activities throughout the year. Thanks to its compact size, Helsinki is ideal for walking and jogging, or you can just as easily enjoy the scenery by cycling or canoeing. While you are in Helsinki you can relax in a genuine Finnish sauna, which you can also combine in wintertime with a swim in the sea through a hole cut in the ice! The newest and most intriguing of Helsinki s public saunas is the Kulttuurisauna culture sauna on the shoreline in Hakaniemenranta. From the terrace you can enjoy a beautiful view to the sea. Design District Fans of design must visit the Design District. The area is home to around 200 designer shops, interior decorating studios, antique dealers, clothing and jewellery boutiques, galleries, museums and restaurants. 18 HÄMEENLINNA The Birthtown of Jean Sibelius Birthplace of Sibelius Inland cruises Häme Castle Welcome to Hämeenlinna! The city of Hämeenlinna was founded in 1639 so Hämeenlinna will be celebrated in Located only one hour s train ride from Helsinki, Hämeenlinna offers many interesting things to see and do. Here are some suggestions for places to go in the city; choose your favourites or visit them all! P.S. Did you know that the great master composer Jean Sibelius was born in Hämeenlinna in 1865? Birthplace of Jean Sibelius Jean Sibelius s childhood home is beautiful Empire-style house with amazing artifacts illustrating the composer s youth. Take a moment in the parlour, letting yourself be carried away by the works of Finland`s foremost composer. Sibelius will be celebrated in 2015, 150 years after the birth of the composer. The Castle peninsula Learn about history on the castle peninsula. A handy combination ticket gives entry to all museums in the area. The thirteenth-century Medieval castle is the main tourist destination of the whole city. Guided tours in English start on the hour daily in summer. Right next to the Castle is the interesting Prison Museum, which actually served as a prison until Museo Militaria The museum of Artillery, engineer and signals museum of Finland presents an interesting collection of old militaria, pictures and multimedia presentations. Sensing culture at Verkatehdas Make sure you spend time at this unique cultural complex. Verkatehdas is an old red-brick factory, which used to house a textile mill. It now provides a home, among others, to the City Theatre, a movie theatre, restaurants, a gift shop, a gallery and the ARX Art Centre for children and Young people. The Hämeenlinna Art Museum can also be found in the Verkatehdas precinct, and houses a significant permanent collection of Finnish art, as well as changing exhibitions. Experiences at Aulanko Aulanko is a wellness, experience and active holiday centre located just five kilometres from the city centre. Spending time in the wooded parklands, admiring the views from the lookout tower, pampering yourself at the spa, playing games and having riding lessons are just some of the many things to do. There are also several options for dining and accommodation. Shopping experiences in Iittala Iittala Glass Center is located 20 kilometres north of Hämeenlinna. It is without doubt the number one destination for shoppers, offering a large selection of Finnish design products, with small craft boutiques and the factory outlets of Iittala Glass Factory and the Kultasuklaa chocolate factory. In summer, visitors can view glass-blowers at work at the factory and learn about the history of glass-making at the Glass Museum. A small part of the Arctic north can be found just three kilometres from the Glass Center: visit the Iittala Reindeer Park to see live reindeer and hear stories from the north. Recommended visit Get to know the city from the water on a cruise on the beautiful Lake Vanajavesi. Cruises are available from Wednesday to Saturday between 4 June and 9 August Cruise tickets from the Tourist Information office or straight from the boat.
