1 STATUTE E2 DEGREE OF MASTER OF EDUCATION Part I: Admission 1. For admission as a candidate for the degree of Master of Education, a person must: be a graduate of the University or such graduate of another university as the Academic Board, on the recommendation of the Dean of Graduate Programmes and Research, National Institute of Education, may approve. have at least two years relevant experience. In addition, for admission to the following specialisation the following are required: (i) Mathematics Education The degree should have a major in mathematics or its equivalent and the relevant experience must be in teaching mathematics. (ii) Science Education The degree should have a major in science or its equivalent and the relevant experience must be in teaching science. (iii) Chinese Language Education The degree should be in Chinese Language and/or literature preferably with honours and the relevant experience must be as Chinese Language teachers. Part II: Degree by Coursework 2. The minimum period of candidature is two years and the maximum period of candidature is four years. 3. During the period of study, a candidature must pursue such courses of study and take such examinations as may be prescribed by Regulations made by the Board of Graduate Studies on the advice of the National Institute of Education. Part III: Degree by Thesis 4. Candidates for the degree of Master of Education solely by thesis are governed by clauses 6-14 of Statute 18 Degrees of Master. REGULATIONS MADE UNDER STATUTE E2 1. Subjects leading to the degree of Master of Education by coursework shall comprise 2 core methodology subject 5 specialisation subjects plus one open elective or 4 specialisation subjects plus 2 open electives a dissertation. 1

(1) The core methodology subjects are MEd 801 and MEd 802, except candidates for the Physical Education specialisation may take either MEd 802 or MES 802 Additional subjects for each of the specialisations are as follows: (i) Primary Education specialisation MPS 801 Curriculum planning MPS 802 Child Development and Learning in Primary School Three electives specialisation subjects with at least one from group A Group A MEd 811 MEd 836 MEd 838 MEd 841 MID 804 Instructional Design and Assessment: Issues and Research Cooperative and Collaborative Learning: Practice, Theory and Research Motivation and Instruction Individual Differences and Learning Integrating Computer Technologies into the School Curriculum Group B (i) All subjects in the Chinese Language specialisation (ii) All subjects in the Special Education and Early Childhood specialisations (iii) All subjects in the Educational and Psychological Measurement specialisation (iv) All subjects in the Science specialisation except MSC 885 (v) All subjects in the Mathematics Education specialisation. However, only those candidates with a degree in mathematics or its equivalent can register for MME 802 or the group B electives. (vi) All subjects in the Physical Education specialisation (vii) For Social Studies MEd 822 and MEd 823 (viii) All subjects for the Art and Music specialisations, MEd 892, MEd 893, MEd 894 and MEd 896. (ix) MEd 845, MEd 850, MEd 861 and MEd 886 (ii) Secondary Education specialisation Three required specialisation subjects MEd 811 Instructional Design and Assessment: Issues and Research MSS 801 Current Issues in Adolescent Psychosocial Development MSS 802 Implications of Social Psychological Theories and Research for Educators Two electives specialisation subjects selected from (i) All subjects in the Chinese Language specialisation. (ii) All subjects in the Special Education and Early Childhood specialisations (iii) All subjects in the Educational and Psychological Measurement specialisation (iv) All subjects in the Science specialisation except MSC 885 (v) All subjects in the Mathematics Education specialisation. However, only those candidates with a degree in mathematics or its equivalent can register for MME 802 or the group B electives. (3) The Board of Graduate Studies, on the advice of the Dean of Graduate Programmes and Research, National Institute of Education, may add or delete subjects from time to time. (4) The Dean of Graduate Programmes and Research, National Institute of Education, shall determine the distribution of subjects for each semester. 3. When selecting a topic for a dissertation, the Dean of Graduate Programmes, National Institute of Education, may require that candidates shall have completed at least two subjects in the appropriate area of the dissertation. Examinations 4. A candidate shall be examined in each of the subjects through a combination of assessment strategies such as assignments, tests, term papers and presentations. 5. (1) A candidate who has not completed and passed at least four subjects since his or her admission to the programme will be dismissed if he or she has either: failed to obtain a pass after two attempts in any one subject; or failed in two or more subjects at any one semestral examination; or failed his first attempts in a total of three subjects since his or her admission to the programme. (2) Regulation 5(1) will not apply to any candidate who has passed at least four subjects since his or her admission to the programme. (3) A candidate who fails an attempt in any subject is required to repeat the course of study in the subject before attempting the examination in that subject again. In the case of failure in an elective subject, the candidate may, with the approval of the Dean of Graduate Programmes and Research, National Institute of Education, offer an alternative subject, which for this purpose will be deemed a repeat attempt in the original subject. (4) Transfer of credits and subject exemptions granted will not be counted as subjects passed in counting the number of subjects a candidate has passed since his admission to the programme. 6

A candidate who is prevented by illness or other extenuating circumstances, from taking or completing the examination may be permitted by the Board of Graduate Studies to take the examination in the relevant papers again at a subsequent period of the examination provided that the illness is reported to the Registrar and a medical report submitted to the Registrar within forty-eight hours of the candidate's absence from the examination. In such a case, the candidate may be required, at the discretion of the Board of Graduate Studies. 7. A dissertation shall not exceed words (including footnotes, but excluding appendices, bibliography, maps, charts, statistical tables, graphs, illustrations). For candidates selecting the Chinese Specialisation the dissertation shall be between and Chinese Characters. 8. Copies of the dissertation must be submitted in accordance with the provisions prescribed in clause 10 of the Degrees of Master Statute (Statute 18). 9. The Academic Board may grant such exemptions as it thinks fit from the requirements of these Regulations. End of Statute E2 7
