2 BACKGROUND TO THE PROPOSAL The New South Wales Department of School Education has a need for school counsellors, and has expressed a wish to have a pre-service (undergraduate) program available to students who wish to pursue such a career path. They require school counsellors to be trained in Education and in Psychology, and as well to be practising teachers. The Faculty of Education, in conjunction with the Department of Psychology is proposing a five year combined degree in Education/Science (Psychology) or Education/Arts (Psychology) to meet this demand. The combined degree will consist of 2 credit points over five years. At the end of either of these combined degrees, these students will be qualified to become secondary school teachers and to be provisionally registered as Psychologists in New South Wales. There are no new units of study to be included in Table 1 of the BSc. New school counselling units in the fifth year will be offered only to students undertaking this combined degree and will be offered through the Faculty of Education and taught by staff in Psychology and Education. There are no new units of study to be included in Table A of the courses for the Bachelor of Arts. 2

HECS FEE (local) Assumed Knowledge: Depends on subjects chosen refer to Table A prerequisites and assumed knowledge for first year subjects Major studies: Education, Psychology and teaching subject either in Science (Physics, Chemistry of Mathematics) or Humanities. Minor Studies: Arts/Science courses required to qualify for the degree B Science, or B Arts. Career opportunities: This program prepares graduates who will qualify as school counsellors as well as teachers in Secondary schools, either in a specified Science discipline area, or a Humanities area (such as English, History or ESL). Additional Information: Students study Arts or specified Science subjects which they will teaching in secondary schools and at the same time complete a major in psychology. Education and professional teaching practice are also studied, and there is provision for professional experience in teaching as well as an applied research component in psychology. The fourth and fifth years of the degree enable students to complete the equivalent of an honours program in Psychology, as well as specialist studies in School Counselling. The major in Arts or Science (Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics) is also completed in the fifth year. Note: Special government policies may apply refer to section 9. in part 1 of this Guide 3
4 ENTRY FOR THE FACULTY HANDBOOK BEd/BSc (Psychology) Students will meet the requirements of the BSc in the first three years of candidature, as follows: Years 1-III Total of18 credit points to be completed: 36 Junior credit points in Science 12 in Mathematics, 12 in Psychology and 12 in either of Chemistry or Physics; and 32 Intermediate credit points in Science 16 in Psychology, and 16 in Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry; and 32 Senior credit points in Science 32 in Psychology; and 8 credit points in Education. Years IV and V Students complete a fourth years (honours equivalent/graduate Diploma in Science), plus 16 credit points in school counselling, 16 credit points in Education and 16 Senior credit points in Science in either of Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry.. BEd/BA (Psychology) Students will meet the requirements of the BA in five years as follows: Years I-III Students will be required to complete a major in Psychology (12 Junior, 16 intermediate and 32 Senior credit points) and a major in one subject taken from Table A of the Arts handbook, together with a further 12 Junior credit points from Table A. The major study, other than Psychology, should be the student s proposed teaching subject, and may comprise English, History, a language that is taught in NSW Secondary schools, Linguistics, Music or Life Sciences Mathematics. In addition, students will complete 8 credit points in Education. Years IV and V Students will complete a fourth year of Psychology (honours equivalent/graduate Diploma in Science), plus 16 credit points in school counselling, 16 credit points in Education and 16 credit points Arts in order to complete the major area of study other than Psychology.
5 STATEMENT OF THE FACULTY SECRETARY At its meeting held on Monday 12 March, the Undergraduate Studies Committee of the Faculty of Education recommended the adoption of the proposal for the combined degrees in Arts and Science (Psychology) for School Counsellors. The Dean, by his signature, endorsed the proposal on behalf of the Faculty of Education. 5
6 GENERIC ATTRIBUTES OF GRADUATES 1. Knowledge skills Graduates should (a) have a body of knowledge in the field of school counseling/psychology; (b) be able to apply theory to practice in school settings; (c) be able to identify, access, organise and communicate knowledge about children and adolescents in both written and oral English; (d) have an appreciation of the requirements and characteristics of scholarship and research; and (e) have the ability to use appropriate technologies in furthering all of the above 2. Thinking skills Graduates should (a) be able to exercise critical judgement, especially while developing appropriate intervention plans for children and adolescents; (b) be capable of rigorous and independent thinking; (c) be able to account for their decisions, as well as evidence documentation or rationale; (d) be realistic self evaluators; (e) adopt a problem solving approach; and (f) be creative and imaginative thinkers. 3. Personal skills Graduates should have (a) the capacity for and a commitment to life-long learning; (b) the ability to plan and achieve goals in both the personal and the professional sphere; and (c) the ability to work with others, especially with children and adolescents.. Personal attributes Graduates should (a) strive for tolerance and integrity; and (b) acknowledge their personal responsibility for (i) their own value judgements; and (ii) their ethical behaviour towards others (c) adhere to the professional code of ethics in all aspects of their life. 5. Practical skills Graduates should (a) be able to use information technology for professional and personal development; and, where appropriate, be able to: (b) collect, correlate, display, analyse and report observations; (c) apply experimentally-obtained results to new situations; (d) test hypotheses experimentally; (e) apply technical skills appropriate to their discipline; (f) develop and implement appropriate interventions for children and adolescents with learning, emotional and behavioural challenges, within the school setting; (g) adhere to the professional code of ethics for psychologists 6
7 SENATE AND FACULTY RESOLUTIONS Faculty of Education: Degrees, Diplomas and Certificates Recommendation That the Undergraduate Studies Committee recommend that the Academic Board recommend that Senate approve the amendment of the Resolutions of the Senate relating to the Degrees, Diplomas and Certificates in the Faculty of Education (page 255, University of Sydney 2000 Calendar) with effect from 1 January 2002 by: (1) including in the list of degrees in the Faculty of Education: 2.(1)(l) Bachelor of Education (Secondary)/Bachelor of Science (Psychology); and 2.(1)(m) Bachelor of Education (Secondary)/Bachelor of Arts (Psychology); and (2) the subsequent re-numbering of that section. Faculty of Education: Senate Resolutions Recommendation That the Undergraduate Studies Committee recommend that the Academic Board recommend that Senate approve the amendment of the Resolutions of the Senate relating to the Combined Courses in the Faculty of Education (page 259, University of Sydney 2000 Calendar) with effect from 1 January 2002 by including the underlined text, as set out below. Combined courses: Bachelor of Education (Secondary: Humanities and Social Sciences)/Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Education (Secondary: Humanities and Social Sciences/Bachelor of Economics (Social Sciences), Bachelor of Education (Secondary: Mathematics)/Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Education (Secondary: Science)/Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Education (Secondary)/Bachelor of Science (Psychology), Bachelor of Education (Secondary)/Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) 1. Candidature for the degrees in the combined courses is full-time. 2. Candidates qualify for the award of the degrees in the combined course by completing 20 credit points, except for the BEd/BA/BSc (Psychology) for which completion of 2 credit points is required. 3. Candidates may, after two years of candidature in the combined course, abandon the combined course and elect to complete either degree in the combined course in accordance with the Resolutions of Senate governing that degree.. Candidates will be under the supervision of the Faculty of Education for the duration of the combined course. If a candidate elects to abandon the combined course and elects to complete the degree in the other Faculty, he/she will then be under the supervision of the other Faculty. 5. Candidates who qualified for either/or both of the degrees and who are otherwise qualified to do so may complete the degree with Honours, according to the Resolutions of the Senate governing that degree. 6. The Deans of both Faculties shall jointly exercise authority in any matter concerning the combined course program not otherwise dealt with in the Resolutions of Senate or these Resolutions. 7

Candidates in the combined course qualify for the degrees of BEd(Sec:Humanities and Social Sciences)/BA by completing the following: (a) A major in Education, at least 32 senior credit points, taken in accordance with the Resolutions of the Bachelor of Education; (b) At least, 72 credit points from Part A of the table of units of study for the Bachelor of Arts, including a major; (c) At least, 32 credit points in Professional Studies in Curriculum Methods; (d) 32 credit points in Teaching and Learning including successful completion of the practicum. 8. Candidates in the combined course qualify for the degrees of BEd(Sec:Humanities and Social Sciences)/BEc(Social Sciences) by completing the following: (a) Economics 1001 and 1002, or Political Economy 1001 and 1002; (b) A major, at least 32 senior credit points in each of two subjects in Table A, one of which is Education; (c) No more than 60 credit points at junior level; (d) At least 32 credit points in the Method and Practice of Teaching; (e) 32 credit points in Teaching and Learning including successful completion of the practicum. 9. Candidates in the combined course qualify for the degrees of BEd(Sec Ed:Mathematics)/BSc by completing the following (a) At least 12 credit points from the Science Subject Areas of Mathematics and Statistics; (b) 2 credit points from Junior units of study in Science Subject Areas, including at least, 12 credit points from Junior units of study from each of two Science Subject Areas other than Mathematics and Statistics; (c) At least 72 credit points from Senior and Intermediate units of study in Science Subject Areas taken in accordance with the Resolutions of the Bachelor of Science; (d) A major in Education, at least 32 senior credit points, taken in accordance with the Resolutions of the Bachelor of Education; (e) At least 32 credit points in Professional Studies in Curriculum Methods; (f) 32 credit points in Teaching and Learning including successful completion of the practicum. 10. Candidates in the combined course qualify for the degrees of BEd(Sec Ed:Science)/BSc by completing the following: (a) At least 12 credit points from the Science Subject Areas of Mathematics and Statistics; (b) 2 credit points from Junior units of study in Science Subject Areas, including at least, 12 credit points from Junior units of study from each of two Science Subject Areas other than Mathematics and Statistics; (c) At least 72 credit points from Senior and Intermediate units of study in Science Subject Areas taken in accordance with the Resolutions of the Bachelor of Science; (d) A major in Education, at least 32 senior credit points, taken in accordance with the Resolutions of the Bachelor of Education; (e) (f) At least, 32 credit points in the Methods and Practice of Teaching; and 32 credit points in Teaching and Learning including the successful completion of the practicum. 11. Candidates in the combined course qualify for the degrees of B Education(Secondary)/B Science (Psychology) by completing the following: Years I to III (a) (b) 36 Junior credit points in Science, of which 12 must be in Mathematics, 12 in Psychology and 12 in either Chemistry or Physics; and 32 Intermediate credit points in Science of which 16 must be in Psychology and 16 in Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry; and 8
9 (c) 32 Senior credit points in Psychology; and (d) At least 8 credit points in Education, taken in accordance with the Resolutions of the Bachelor of Education (Secondary Education: Science); and Years IV and V (a) IVth year Psychology (honours equivalent/graduate Diploma in Science); and (b) 16 credit points in School Counselling; and (c) 16 credit points in Education, taken in accordance with the Resolutions of the Bachelor of Education (Secondary Education: Science); and (d) 16 credit points in Science in either Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry 12. Candidates in the combined course qualify for the degrees of BEducation(Secondary)/B Arts (Psychology) by completing the following: Years I to III (a) 60 credit points in Psychology, of which 12 must be Junior, 16 Intermediate and 32 Senior credit points; and (b) A major (at least 32 credit points) in one subject area offered by the Faculty of Arts, taken from Part A of the Table of Units of Study for the Bachelor of Arts. The major should be the proposed teaching subject and may comprise English, History, a language that is taught in NSW Secondary Schools, Linguistics, Performance Studies or Fine Arts; and (c) At least 12 additional Junior credit points in Arts, taken from Part A of the Table of Units of Study for the Bachelor of Arts; and (d) 8 credit points in Education, taken in accordance with the Resolutions of the Bachelor of Education (Secondary: Humanities and Social Sciences). Years IV and V (a) IVth year Psychology (honours equivalent/graduate Diploma in Science; and (b) 16 credit points in School Counselling; and (c) 16 credit points in Education, taken in accordance with the Resolutions of the Bachelor of Education (Secondary: Humanities and Social Sciences) and (d) 16 credit points in Arts taken from Part A to complete the major area of study other than Psychology. 9
