4 Palliative care and end of life Course title Who is it for? What will I learn? Date Venue Palliative Care (Survivorship awareness session follows on the same day) Qualified staff, complementary therapists, clinical psychologists, social workers, volunteers in information centres, etc. To build knowledge of palliative care and survivorship. The course will include: understanding the emotional effects on patients and families at the end of life understanding what care can be provided at the end of life understanding how families deal with loss and bereavement. 14/04/14 (1/2 day a.m. session) 16/10/14 (1/2 day a.m. session) Young people facing bereavement Delivered by St Christopher's Hospice For experienced qualified staff To develop skills and approaches to support young people in the face of bereavement. The course will help you to: better understand young people's needs when facing bereavement (11-18 yrs) understand how young people grieve develop approaches and skills to support young people. 30/09/14 Advanced care planning Delivered by St Christopher's Hospice Macmillan professionals, especially those working with patients at end of life To provide the knowledge and skills to provide better planning and support at end of life. The course will help you to: understand the value of Advanced Care Planning and practice the skills required be better able to understand how to assess patients needs at the end of life develop skills and confidence to assist in developing advance care plans. 30/10/14 4

5 Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT): Introductory day Delivered by St Christopher's Hospice Clinicians involved in delivering end-of-life care in any setting An introduction to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, including: basic understanding of the CBT model and its use in long term or life limiting conditions and at the end of life awareness of a number of basic CBT skills increased understanding of which patients/carers may benefit from this approach 25/02/14 Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) in cancer and palliative care: "First Aid" basic skills Delivered by St Christopher's Hospice Clinicians working in oncology and palliative care settings, whose role specifically includes the provision of psychological care for patients and carers, and who are involved in assessing for psychological distress, providing appropriate psychological and/or supportive interventions. Suitable for those practising Level 2 of NICE guidance in supportive and palliative care A three-day course designed to develop your use of CBT in any setting. Training will involve a combination of didactic teaching, experiential learning, demonstration and discussion, including: a detailed introduction to the cognitive model an illustration of how this model can help clinicians gain a better understanding of how emotional reactions to illness are shaped by underlying beliefs and characteristic coping strategies Exploration of a range of cognitive and behavioural skill along with emotion / supportive techniques. 24/09/14, 25/09/14 and11/11/14 Important: Please note this is a three part course and you must be able to attend all dates Think Tank for palliative care nurse independent prescribers and prescribing pharmacists Delivered by St Christopher's Hospice Palliative care nurses, independent prescribers and prescribing pharmacists A half day interactive workshop to support prescribers around palliative care. You will need to bring one or two case studies to discuss in the group. The course will provide: guidance on prescribing in specific clinical conditions relevant to palliative care an update on prescribing support for prescribers with their ongoing practice. 06/11/14 5

6 Challenging conversations at the end of life Delivered by St Christopher's Hospice For experienced qualified staff who regularly contribute to the care of people approaching the end of life Important: Please note this is a two part course and you must be able to attend both dates A two day course focusing on communication skills in an end of life environment. The course will help you to: increase awareness of your personal communication style and the impact it can have increase skills and confidence in listening and responding develop a personal strategy for future practice development. 11/02/14 and 12/02/14 25/06/14 and 26/06/14 20/11/14 and 21/11/14 New technologies for palliation Delivered by St Christopher's Hospice For palliative care specialists To understand new developments in palliative care treatments, including: the range of new interventional technologies that potentially have significant benefit for selected patients an exploration of what is available for bleeding, bronchial obstruction, vertebral collapse and fungating skin lesions. 14/11/14 Emotional well-being in palliative care Delivered by Mike Kay, University of Wales tutor and Neuro- Linguistic Programming Practitioner Macmillan professionals working in end of life care and with palliative care teams This day seeks to develop a greater understanding of how to develop and maintain your own well-being, with a focus on the unique demands of your role. It will enable you to: develop self insight into emotional wellbeing and stress develop skills, techniques and approaches to alleviate stress and restore emotional well-being understand how to produce your own unique "live" plan of change. 25/02/14 24/06/14 04/11/14 Peterborough Surrey Sussex 6

Delivered by St Christopher's Hospice Non-clinical front line support staff, indirect volunteers, etc. An introductory course on communication skills for non-clinical front line support staff in hospitals, hospices, care homes or local authorities. The course will help you to: better understand what to say when confronted with unexpected telephone calls, meetings in corridors, etc. gain an overview of loss and the varied responses to it explore the basics of good communication skills and ways of responding to people who may be distressed, confused or angry. 17/11/14 7

10 Annual Primary Care event Macmillan LASER GPs The day will provide a valuable opportunity to develop knowledge and network with other peers. The event includes: updates on Macmillan s work and resources to support your practice presentations and guest speakers to inform and inspire opportunities to build awareness of skills and competencies and consider their relevance in primary care practice for supporting patients during, after treatment and in commissioning cancer care. 03/07/14 Know what you can say about welfare benefits For CNS s, information managers and ward nurses caring for cancer patients To increase knowledge and understanding about the welfare benefits system and how it applies to people affected by cancer. The course will help you: improve understanding of the impact of financial problems on cancer patients increase understanding of the new welfare benefits system better understand what resources staff can signpost patients to. TBC TBC Bury St Edmunds The role of integrated medicine in cancer care Professionals interested in this topic A presentation by Dr. George Lewith. 14 Service development, marketing and influencing commissioning Delivered by June Davies, Allied Health Solutions For experienced professionals with an interest in or a need to know more about how commissioning works A "bite sized" overview of influencing commissioners, marketing your services, the importance of clinical commissioning for outcomes and how you can lead and transform patient-led healthcare services. Date Venue One day course in mindful compassion For GPs, practice nurses and practitioners working with primary care teams This is an introductory mindful compassion course which will enable you to: understand what is meant by mindfulness and compassion. learn a few key mindful and compassionate practices. have an overview of the neuroscience of emotional systems and how these can develop the practice of self compassion. reflect on how this learning can impact on work and home life. learn to care more deeply for ourselves - which enhances the caring we do at work. 09/05/14 12/09/14 Cambridge Bury St Edmunds HOPE facilitator training (Help to Overcome Problems Effectively) Delivered by Coventry University For experienced staff/staff with personal experience of cancer or staff who work closely with cancer survivors/volunteer lay cancer survivors or lay volunteers with experience of caring for someone with cancer or working closely with cancer survivors. Important: this is a two day course and you must be able to attend both dates This two day course will teach you how to successfully facilitate the HOPE programme. The course includes: the theory and spirit of the HOPE programme and positive psychology. Teaching methods include interactive power point presentation, group discussion, group activities (role plays) and media clips. how to deliver the HOPE programme using the facilitator manual. The course will help you to: learn about updates on the programme maximise activity planning and delivery use feedback from patients and carers share ideas about how to promote the programme and recruit new facilitators share good practice and gain structured peer support to overcome challenges. 25/06/14 02/07/14 Stevenage Bury St Edmunds HOPE carer conversion course Individuals who have already attended the facilitators training This half day will enable HOPE trained facilitators to run carer courses. 20 Self management support and health behaviour change master class Delivered by Petrea Fagan, Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Trust Macmillan professionals who have attended a previous introductory self management support course This intensive and highly interactive workshop enables you to practise and test key self management support (SMS) and health behaviour change (HBC) skills including: clinical communication skills motivational interviewing Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. It includes patient activation, exploring ambivalence, practical examples of application, tips for service re-design and how the skills can also be used for successful shared decision making. 17/09/14 St Albans Introduction to leading and managing health services Macmillan professionals This day will introduce you to the concepts underpinning effective management and leadership in a health context. The day is an interactive session that will focus on building awareness of approaches, impact of personal style and how you can develop in order to enhance management and leadership capability. The course will: provide increased knowledge of management and leadership styles and approaches explore the impact of differing styles and approaches in a health context raise awareness of personal preferences and how this can influence outcomes identify how individuals can develop effective management and leadership capability help you to develop a personal action plan to increase management and leadership knowledge and skills. 10/07/14 Surrey 20

The course will include: differences between listening and other helping strategies the importance of listening and responding appropriately opportunities to practise and develop listening and responding skills in a supportive environment. TBC South East Research Masterclass Professionals interested in research, who are considering or undertaking a Master s research project An opportunity to network (evening refreshments provided), hear about professionals research projects and debate the topic. This session will help you: understand how to approach a research subject debate subjects within your peer group TBC (Time 18.00hrs 19.30hrs) 21
