19 Historic TWA Terminal at JFK Airport New York, New York (USA) Eero Saarinen s TWA Terminal at JFK International Airport has been an icon of modern architecture since it opened in The Terminal was an experiment in aviation technology, incorporating the first use of jetways and baggage carousels. The airline industry quickly outpaced the unique Saarinen design, and in 2001 it was closed. The terminal was later listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the Port Authority began a reconstruction and renovation of the concrete building. The public areas were restored, incorporating life and fire safety improvements, so the terminal may reopen to the public as a pass-through to the JetBlue terminal and for special events. On the interior, the sunken seating area was restructured with new banquettes and benches installed. Enhanced lighting dramatically illuminates the interior. A new accessibility lift, emergency lighting, fire alarms and a smoke detection system were incorporated into the restoration. Finally, the original Solari information boards were redesigned with LCD technology and reactivated. The most challenging part of the project was the restoration of the penny tile interior finish made up of tiny mosaic hexagonal tiles. After a painstaking search for a qualified manufacturer, more than 3 million pieces were produced for use in this project and to have on hand for future restoration. MAPEI custom-blended a special Keracolor S grout color to match the existing grout used with the small mosaic tiles. This custom color was called TWA Gray. Keracrete additive was mixed with the Keracolor S to set and grout the tiles. Mapelastic AquaDefense was used as a means of crack isolation in newly tiled sections on the bulkheads in the main area. Mapeguard 2 was used on the top part of the bulkheads to address existing cracks. Mapecem Quickpatch was used for patching wherever cracks and divots resulted from removing the old tiles. One of MAPEI s fast-track carpet adhesive was used to install carpet on the floors of the tubes leading from the main area of the historic terminal to the new JetBlue concourse in Terminal 5. Planipatch patching compound was used for patching small holes and divots before installing the carpet. The Western Canada location was chosen because of the tranquil views of the lake near Vernon, BC. Photo: Evgeni Chekanov Photography. MAPEI products were used to install various tile products related to the pools, changing rooms and sauna areas, as well as 3,716 m 2 of tile and other flooring throughout the resort. The spa was a huge project with many challenges from the waterproofing of pools and hot tubs to the typical tile- and stone-related issues commonly seen in today s fast-paced world of construction. Areas were waterproofed with Mapelastic AquaDefense, and tiles were set with the Kerabond/Keralastic and Granirapid mortar systems. The installers used Kerabond/Keralastic to tile floors and walls in the massage rooms and hot mud rooms with marble, as well as tile the floors surrounding the cold sauna (which operates at a temperature of 79 C). Marble was installed on the walls of the wellness treatment areas, the pool areas and all the changing rooms with Kerabond/ Keralastic as well. Huge pillars near the pools were wrapped in glass mosaics, using Kerabond/Keralastic. Common areas and rest rooms in the spas were also set with this premium two-component mortar. Granirapid was used wherever there was a need for speed in the installation. In guest suites, wall tiles were set with Ultraflex LFT, while Kerabond/Keralastic was used on the floors to set granite tiles. In the back-office areas, VCT was laid with Ultrabond ECO 711. Wool Axminster carpet was set with the double glue-down technique, using Ultrabond ECO 810 for the pad and Ultrabond ECO 220 for the carpet. 23 Ottawa Convention Centre Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Like an abstract crystal vision of a giant tulip petal, the new Ottawa Convention Centre (OCC) replaces an earlier building on the same site in Canada s capitol city. As green in spirit as the beautiful tulips that are celebrated each year at the Ottawa Tulip Festival, the OCC was built to LEED Silver Certification standards and adheres to sustainable practices in its operation. Bellai Brothers was contracted to fix recesses in the slabs that occurred due to engineering requirements and to do an extensive amount of leveling work in all areas of the OCC. For these tasks, they used a variety of MAPEI s repair mortars and selfleveling underlayments. Wherever a deep pour needed to be filled, Mapecem 100 was used for the first 3,8 cm; then the area was coated with Primer L and covered with another 3,2 cm of Ultraplan 1 Plus. Where a 5-cm thickness was needed to complete a recess repair, the crew used Primer T and Ultraplan Easy self-leveling underlayment for time-saving repairs. Ultraplan Easy was especially useful for leveling over the top of old residue in the remaining part of the original building. Ultraplan 1 Plus self-leveling underlayment and Novoplan 2 were used with Primer L in many areas for effective, cost-efficient leveling of slabs, including areas such as the mechanical room and bathrooms. Ultraplan 1 Plus was preferred for all areas where a quick turnaround time was needed. Planitop X repair mortar was employed for vertical and overhead horizontal repairs wherever necessary. For a specialty repair on the third floor of the convention centre, where a structural repair was needed for a large recess, they laid down 6 mm of pea gravel and then topped this with Ultraplan M20 Plus self-leveling underlayment. Primer L and Novoplan 2 self-leveler were used to further smooth the floors. Ultrabond ECO 810 was used to install m 2 of the Ecowerks eco-friendly carpet tiles. In the ballroom and other convention rooms where heavy machinery was scheduled to be used shortly after the installation, the crews set m 2 of the carpet tiles with Ultrabond ECO 885, a new MAPEI carpet adhesive specifically designed to provide a very aggressive bond to polyolefin-type carpet backings where traditional adhesives will not work. 24 Page 21 Armani Hotel in the Burj Khalifa Tower Dubai, United Arab Emirates
25 Armani Hotel in the Burj Khalifa Tower Dubai, United Arab Emirates With its 162 floors and razor-edge spire that reaches 828 meters high, the Burj Khalifa Tower was designed by the Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP design studio from Chicago. The tower is divided into 354 residential apartments, 237 suites, a series of exclusive hotel rooms, offices, and fitness centers, a mosque and an observation terrace. Construction work on the Burj Khalifa Tower started in The plan was inspired by the form of the hymenocallis, a flower that is particularly loved in Dubai, and the skyscraper is composed of three elements with a central nucleus. Through its local subsidiary, IBS LLC, MAPEI played a key role in supplying the Armani Hotel housed inside the skyscraper. The hotel offers 160 guest rooms and suites, eight restaurants, luxury shops and one spa center. MAPEI Technical Services supported the project s hotel interior fit-out contractors and recommended the use of Keraflex for the installation of ceramic tiles and stone slabs on walls and floors in several areas (front of house, reception, apartments, residence, boutique offices, restaurant, etc.). Substrate preparation was carried out to certain critical areas such as the ballroom and business center using Mapecem, for screeds, and Ultraplan and Ultraplan Maxi for smoothing the substrates. Tile joints were grouted with Keracolor FF. In the bathrooms, Ultracolor Plus grout was used for the joints. Natural stone slabs were laid on the walls of the bathrooms within the Armani Nightclub with Keraflex adhesive. Granirapid adhesive was also used to bond the slabs on the floors to other areas, after the substrate s wet areas were waterproofed with Mapelastic. Joints were grouted with Ultracolor Plus and Keracolor FF. Kerapoxy was used for grouting the joints in the bathrooms and in the kitchen. The project also included some high-quality pre-engineered wooden flooring installed with Ultrabond P990 1K in the corridors and in the lobby. 26 Page 23 Crowne Plaza Hotel Lieges, Belgium
27 Crowne Plaza Hotel Lieges, Belgium The Crowne Plaza, considered to be one of the best five-star hotels in Lieges, was recently restructured to combine two buildings Hotel des Comtes de Méan and Hotel Sélys-Longchamps. This latter construction is a listed Wallonia heritage site. It was the home of aristocratic families for years until it was bought by baron Maurice de Sélys Longchamps in 1910, who converted it into a hotel. When the baron died, the hotel frequently changed hands until it was purchased by its present owner, who began extensive restructuring work to transform it into a five-star hotel. The building work lasted two years, and the hotel eventually reopened in June 2010, providing guests with 126 rooms and 15 suites located in the tower of old Hotel Sélys Longchamps. The building covers an area of 13,000 m², and the MAPEI Technical Services team was called upon to help install the wooden and textile wall and floor coverings. The client decided to lay an oak parquet floor in the main ballroom covering approximately 400 m². First, Primer MF epoxy primer was applied to the cementitious substrate for strengthening and waterproofing purposes. After the primer dried, the oak strips were installed in a fishbone pattern using the two-component adhesive Ultrabond P902 2K. The main lounge area, pub and restaurant floors were also covered with oak parquet, installed using Ultrabond P990 1K adhesive. Textile floors were installed in all the bedrooms using Ultrabond ECO Fix and Ultrabond ECO 520 adhesives, which have very low emission levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Where required, the substrate was smoothed using Nivorapid+Latex Plus. 29 Cowboys Stadium Dallas, Texas, USA The Cowboys Stadium was completed in Arlington, next to Dallas, in Texas (USA) in May This stadium can host more than 110,000 people. Nearly 28,000 m 2 of walls and flooring were covered with ceramic tiles and stone slabs. MAPEI products contributed to the completion of this stadium. Primer L was used to prime the 18,600 m 2 of substrate, which was then leveled with Ultraplan 1 Plus and Ultraplan M20 Plus self-leveling compounds. Mapelastic AquaDefense waterproofing membrane was used for its crack-isolation properties to cover the surface. Granirapid had been specified for the stone installation. Ultracolor Plus grout in black, gray and Sahara beige shades was used to grout the joints. Color-matching Keracaulk S was used for control joints in the floors. Ultraflex LFT was used for bonding the largesize granite slabs on the floors in the lobbies. In the 365 Entry lobby, which is open year-round for ticket purchases and access to the Cowboys Pro Shop, the floor substrates were leveled with Ultraplan 1 Plus and treated with Mapelastic 400. Light gray basalt slabs were laid on the floors with Ultraflex LFT. Joints were grouted with Ultracolor Plus. Keracaulk was again used for the control joints. Glass mosaics were set on the backsplashes for the countertops in 400 luxury suites with Adesilex P10 adhesive. 30 Pirelli Building Milan, Italy On April 18, 2002, at 5:47 p.m., a single-engine Commander 112 Tc aircraft hit the façade of the Pirelli building in Milan, Italy, between the 26th and the 27th floors. Impacting practically on the centerline of the building, the plane crashed through the wall. As a result of the impact, the engine of the aircraft detached from the fuselage, exiting from the opposite side of the building. The two fuel tanks, located near the wings, exploded. A fire started in the breached outer wall, with a highly visible column of smoke billowing from the building. The aircraft itself came to rest against machinery spaces between the floors. While there was no damage to the 26th floor, the shock wave from the fuel tank explosion caused highly visible downward deformations in the 26th floor s frames and upward deformation in the 27th floor s frames. The restoration project entailed the static repair of the beams of the central area of the 26th and 27th floors frames. The first step was to realign the frame by forcing it, in a controlled manner. After the damaged sections were re-built and the gaps were sealed, the damaged structures were returned to their original load-bearing capacity by a combination of post-tensioned external cables and the use of carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) to plate the bottom face of the girders and parts of the floor. Page 27 Pirelli Building Milan, Italy After repairs were completed on the degraded concrete, the structural strengthening of the girders and the bottom face of the floor slabs was performed by applying pultruded carbon fiber laminas. The substrate was thoroughly cleaned, an epoxy primer (MapeWrap Primer 1) was applied to consolidate the surfaces, and then Carboplate E 170/50 was applied with an epoxy adhesive (Adesilex PG1).
31 Diagnostic work was done throughout the process to define the restoration techniques and determine the best materials to restore the façade and the load-bearing capacity to the 26th and 27th floors. MAPEI worked diligently with the Pirelli Building owners to deliver a satisfactory repair that allowed the building to reopen on April 18, TECHNICAL DATA Period of MAPEI Intervention: Client: Regional Government of Lombardy Designer: Gio Ponti Contractor: Grassi & Cresspi Srl., and Marcora Srl.
