1 Mapelastic Roller-Grade, Flexible Cementitious Membrane for Concrete Waterproofing and Protection DESCRIPTION Mapelastic is a cementitious membrane for protecting new concrete structures, concrete structures repaired with Mapecem or Planitop mortars, renders with hairline cracks adnd any cementitious surface subject to vibrations and the subsequent cracking. Mapelastic also is designed as an intermediate waterproofing membrane on such hydraulic projects as channels and faces of dams as well as swimming pools, basins, storage tanks, balconies and terraces. FEATURES AND BENEFITS Robust protection against water and aggressive elements Outstanding bond to a variety of horizontal and vertical surfaces Remains flexible in most environments Easy application with roller, brush or plaster pump Suitable for waterproofing system use as an intermediate coating INDUSTRY STANDARDS AND APPROVALS ANSI: Exceeds A standard (Waterproofing Membranes for Thin-Set Ceramic Tile) IAPMO: Listed for use as shower pan liner LEED Points Contribution LEED Points MR Credit 5, Regional Materials*... Up to 2 points IEQ Credit 4.2, Low-Emitting Materials Paints & Coatings...1 point * Using this product may help contribute to LEED certification of projects in the categories shown above. Points are awarded based on contributions of all project materials. WHERE TO USE Mapelastic is a two-component mortar based on cementitious binders, finegrained selected aggregates, special additives and synthetic polymers in water dispersion, blended according to a formula developed in MAPEI s research laboratories. Mixing the two components creates a blend with a plastic consistency. The mixed product may be applied to horizontal and vertical surfaces at a thickness of 40 to 80 mils (1 to 2 mm) per coat by brush, roller or spraying with a plaster pump. Due to its high-quality synthetic resins, a hardened layer of Mapelastic remains constantly flexible under most environmental conditions (not for use in conditions below 14 F [-10 C]). Mapelastic is completely waterproof up to a pressure of 50 head feet (positive side). It is resistant to the penetration of aggressive atmospheric substances (such as carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide and sulphuric anhydride), and of soluble salts (such as chlorides and sulphates) in seawater and in the ground. Mapelastic has excellent bonding properties to all cementitious, ceramic and marble surfaces that are solid and sufficiently clean. These properties protect and waterproof structures to be hard-wearing, even under particularly adverse climatic conditions, in coastal areas high in atmospheric salt content and in industrial areas with heavy air pollution.
2 Mapelastic Uses include: Intermediate waterproofing membrane for hydraulic channels, faces of dams and basins Intermediate waterproofing membrane for retaining walls and foundations Intermediate waterproofing of bathrooms, showers, balconies, terraces, swimming pools, etc., before laying ceramic tile dressings Protection against water and aggressive atmospheric elements for cementitious renders and concrete that has cracks from shrinkage, from small movements caused by thermal gradients or from dynamic stresses due to vehicles Protection against carbon dioxide for concrete pillars and joists as well as road and railway viaducts repaired with Mapecem or Planitop products Protection against aggressive elements for structures with an inadequate layer of concrete over the reinforcement rods Protection of concrete surfaces that could be exposed to seawater, such de-icing salts as sodium and calcium chloride, and sulphates LIMITATIONS Do not install over substrates containing asbestos. Do not apply Mapelastic at temperatures lower than 46 F (8 C). Do not add cement, aggregate or water to Mapelastic. Do not leave Mapelastic as an exposed surface. Consult MAPEI s Technical Services Department for installation recommendations regarding substrates and conditions not listed. SUITABLE SUBSTRATES Cementitious surfaces Masonry block Ceramic and marble surfaces SURFACE PREPARATION 1. Protection and waterproofing of concrete structures (e.g., intermediate waterproofing membrane for pillars and beams for road and railway bridges, cooling towers, underpasses, retaining walls, applications in coastal areas, basins, swimming pools, channels, faces of dams, columns, faces of balconies) Make sure the surface to be treated is sound and perfectly clean. Remove all cement laitance, flaky parts and traces of powder, grease, oil and removing compounds by sandblasting or washing down with high-pressure water. If using Mapelastic to waterproof and protect a structure that is in a poor condition, remove the damaged parts by hand or mechanical demolition, or by using a hydro-demolition system or a hydroscarifier. Note: Using high-pressure water for the previous 2 steps is particularly recommended so that the reinforcement rods are not damaged, and the structures are not subject to vibrations that could cause hairline cracks in adjacent concrete. Sandblast the structure to remove any rust, then repair damage with a ready-mixed Planitop or Mapecem mortar (see respective Technical Data Sheets [TDSs]). It is generally advisable to make any required repairs to the substrate to smooth depressions or rough substrate. Dampen absorbent surfaces with water before treating them with Mapelastic. 2. Intermediate waterproofing membrane for terraces, balconies and swimming pools Cementitious screed: Use a high modulus epoxy (such as Planibond EBA or Planibond CR 50) to seal cracks caused by plastic shrinkage. If creating slopes, filling in dips or making concrete repairs, use the appropriate product from the Planitop or Mapecem family (see TDSs). Cracks should be repaired before Mapelastic is applied, although MAPEI does not warrant that cracks will not reappear when following established repair techniques. Existing floors: Existing ceramic floors and coverings must be wellbonded to the substrate. They also should be free from substances that could compromise the quality of the bond, such as grease, oil, wax and paint. Renders: New rendering materials must be well-cured; in good weather, allow at least 7 days per 1/2" (12 mm) of thickness applied. These materials also should be adherent to the substrate and free from laitance and paint. Before treating absorbent surfaces with Mapelastic, dampen them with water. MIXING Note: Choose all appropriate safety equipment before use. Refer to Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for more information. 1. Pour one half of the Part B (liquid) into a suitable, clean container. Slowly add all of the Part A (powder) while stirring with a mechanical mixer (do not hand-mix). At this first stage, the higher powder-to-liquid concentration will provide greater shear in the mix, and result in more complete product mixing.
3 2. Using a low-speed mixer to prevent air entrapment, mix Mapelastic for 2 to 3 minutes, ensuring that no powder remains stuck to the sides or the bottom of the container, and any lumps in the material are broken up. 3. Mix material until a homogenous mixture is achieved. Then add the final half of the Part B liquid to the mixture, and mix for another 2 minutes until a homogenous mixture is again realized. 4. A mortar mixer can instead be used to prepare Mapelastic. If this technique is used, ensure that the mixture is homogenous and lump-free before it is poured into the hopper of the pump. PRODUCT APPLICATION Brush or roller application: 1. Read all installation instructions thoroughly before installation. 2. Using a brush or roller, apply at least two coats of Mapelastic within 60 minutes of mixing, achieving a final thickness of at least 80 mils (2 mm). 3. MAPEI s Mapetex Sel must be used when waterproofing terraces, balconies, basins and swimming pools, and for protecting substrates with hairline cracks and particularly stressed elements. Embed Mapetex Sel in the first layer of fresh Mapelastic to act as a reinforcement, and ensure correct thickness of material is applied. 4. After the mesh has been laid, smooth the surface with a flat trowel. Once the first layer of Mapelastic sets (in about 4 to 5 hours), apply a second layer. 5. When waterproofing, be careful around expansion joints and joints between horizontal and vertical surfaces. In these cases, use MAPEI s Mapeband (rubber-coated polyester fiber coving tape). 6. After applying Mapelastic, wait at least 2 to 5 days (depending on temperature and humidity) for curing (in favorable climate conditions) before laying ceramic tiles. Using fast-setting mortars (Granirapid, Ultraflex RS or Ultracontact RS) can reduce this waiting time. Spray application: 1. Read all installation instructions thoroughly before installation. 2. After preparing the surface, apply Mapelastic with a spray gun, using a lance fitting designed to smooth mortar. Apply at a minimum thickness of 40 mils (1 mm) and a maximum thickness of 60 mils (1,5 mm) per layer in order to realize a final layer of two coats, at least 80 mils or (2 mm) thick. 3. Successive coats should only be applied once the previous coat is dry (after 4 to 5 hours). 4. In areas with hairline cracks or that are highly stressed, insert 3/16" (4,5 mm) Mapetex Sel in the first layer of fresh Mapelastic. Immediately after laying the mesh, smooth the Mapelastic with a flat trowel. 5. To achieve full encapsulation of Mapetex Sel, wait for the first layer of Mapelastic to dry (4 to 5 hours) and apply another layer of Mapelastic with a spray gun. When working around expansion joints and joints between horizontal and vertical surfaces, use Mapeband. Installing ceramic tiles: 1. Install tiles for balconies and swimming pools with the appropriate MAPEI cementitious mortar. For swimming pools and areas where mosaics are installed, use the Granirapid System, the Kerabond/ Keralastic System, or Keraset and Keraply. 2. Grout the joints between the tiles with a suitable cementitious grout, such as Keracolor S or Ultracolor Plus. 3. Seal expansion joints with the appropriate sealant. Alternate membrane reinforcing technique with Mapetex Sel nonwoven fabric: Utilizing Mapetex Sel mesh provides additional dimensional stability and crack bridging capability of greater than 1/8" (3 mm). 1. Apply (by roller, trowel or spray) an initial coat of Mapelastic at 40 to 60 mils (1 to 1,5 mm) thick to the substrate. While material is still wet, lay Mapetex Sel fabric into the material and run a flat-bladed trowel across the fabric until it is completely buttered with the first coat of Mapelastic (ensure that any air pockets are removed). 2. Immediately apply a second coat of Mapelastic (40 mils or 1 mm thick), and finish to the desired finish. 3. If mesh is covered (encapsulated in Mapelastic ) and final thickness is 80 mils (2 mm) or greater, no third coat is required. CURING After applying Mapelastic, wait at least 16 to 24 hours in favorable conditions (greater than 73 F [23 C] and less than 50% humidity) for curing before laying ceramic tiles. If cooler or more humid, provide additional curing time (up to 2 to 5 days total). In all cases, the material must be dry, and firm (not soft) before proceeding. CLEANUP Due to the high bonding strength of Mapelastic, even on metals, wash tools with water immediately after use and before the mortar sets. Once the product has set, it can only be removed by mechanical means. PROTECTION 1. During hot weather, keep the Mapelastic components (powder and liquid) out of direct sunlight before mixing. 2. After application, and in particularly dry, hot or windy weather, use sheets to protect the drying surface from rapid evaporation. 3. Do not use solvent-based curing compounds. 4. Protect from rain and water spillages for the first 24 hours after application.
