1 SUMMER THINKING CITY SCHOOL BEYOND RESILIENCE SUMMER SCHOOL THINKING CITY is an interdisciplinary programme on city planning and city making, organised by the Foundation Thinking City in collaboration with the University of Amsterdam and the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions (AMS). AMSTERDAM A group of sixty scientists, planners and designers from all around the world will work for two weeks on specific urban challenges for the city of Amsterdam, in close collaboration with local stakeholders. In the evenings a free public lecture programme will be accommodated in various buildings that make part of Amsterdam s extensive cultural and educational network. This second edition of the programme, themed Beyond Resilience, will explore the capacity of urban systems to not only withstand unexpected changes or even crises, but benefit from them. This question will be addressed through six different case studies, ranging from the topics of urban infrastructure and circular economy to health and the urban environment, from the role of art festivals in the city to the liveability of a tourist hot spot, from the participation of refugees in society to the quality of life of elderly in an urban neighborhood As a result of the programme each studio will create a narrative, about the case study they have worked on, about the themes they addressed, about the future of Amsterdam a story that will draw the attention, open the imagination and mobilise the city for further action JULY

2 CASE STUDIES CASE 1. WATER AND URBAN VITALITY Stakeholder: Rob Ververs (Waternet), Marcel van Hest (Alliander) Team: Boris Hocks (POSAD Spatial Strategies), Bas van Vliet (environmental sociologist WUR) A study of potential water, waste and energy systems for one of Amsterdam s most diverse areas. CASE 3. STAGING HEALTH IN CITIES Stakeholder: Jaap Goudsmit (global head Janssen Prevention Center, UvA) Team: Janna Bystrykh (associate OMA/ AMO), Sanne van den Breemer (architect, tutor Berlage) An exploration of potential formats, platforms and models for a renewed collaboration between urban planners, (public) health professionals and (new) stakeholders in city development, to address healthcare concerns associated with the wide spreading of welfare related diseases. CASE 4. ART AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP Stakeholder: Yvonne Franquinet (), Felix Guttman (Amsterdam Light Festival), Aart van Bolhuis (Amsterdam Light Festival) Team: Marta Relats (Delft University of Technology), Miriam Meissner (University of Amsterdam) A study of the growing festival culture in Amsterdam, the policies and processes that steer these cultural initiatives, the spatial manifestation of these temporary events and their potential influence on urban environment on the long term. CASE 5. BEYOND CONSUMERISM Stakeholder: Pauline Buurma (Rokin Entrepreneurs Association) Team: Nathan de Groot (urbanist) and Roel van Herpt (strategist) A reflection on the notion of the shopping street by studying the Rokin -- one of Amsterdam s most populous shopping areas -- from different points of view: urban planning and design, storytelling, filmmaking, psychology and art.
