3 Construction Site Fencing Art Project in Geuzenveld The City Borough of Geuzenveld-Slotermeer and Corporatie Stadgenoot invite you to come up with ideas for an art project for the fencing surrounding various construction sites in Geuzenveld. This initially involves a project for existing fencing in Cuypershof and Dudokhaken, surrounding existing or future construction sites. This document should give you an idea of what we have in mind for the fencing project and sets out the project criteria. Why an art project? A project involving fencing around construction sites has a positive effect on the surroundings. This is very much needed when a construction site is placed in the middle of a residential area as it does cause a great deal of inconvenience. For example, a positive effect can be created by: having the surroundings consist of more than just the construction site the fact that art can inspire people and put them in a more positive frame of mind What do we want you to do? We would like you to come up with a project for fencing around construction sites that: fits in with the surroundings has a positive effect on the area (because of the design, the theme, etc.) can be reused possibly involves the local residents has a clear physical presence and can be used on or around construction site fencing provides some form of connection between the various locations To be submitted: scale models 1:20 and 1:100 a PowerPoint or similar presentation visualising the project a booklet in which the project is clearly explained both in pictures and in words You will have the opportunity present your project on Friday 7 February to interested parties from the City Borough, the housing corporation and residents from the various locations. Please do remember that you will be presenting to a very broad audience. 3

4 The sites and fencing The sites are shown on the map on the following page. The first construction sites are at the following locations: 1 Cuypershof: 75 fences (3.40 m by 1.85 m) 2 Dudokhaken Phase 1: 115 fences (3.40 m by 1.85 m) Phase 2: 115 fences (to be erected in mid-february) (3.40 m by 1.85 m) 3 Eendrachtparkbuurt This project will not take place until autumn 2009 (see map for area of construction site). It should however be noted that it may be possible here to work with some other kind of boundary marker rather than the existing fencing. the existing fencing was made by Heras and measures 3.40 by 1.85 m. other options may be possible in the Eendrachtparkbuurt. This must be discussed with Marieke Koenes (from Stadgenoot) on Monday 2 February. Impressions Cuypershof Dudokhaken 4

This will also consist of 115 fences 5

6 Background information Urban redevelopment in Geuzenveld-Slotermeer The borough was built fifty years ago and the area no longer meets modern housing requirements. The large amount of green and space in still appreciated, but there are problems also, such as safety issues, a lack of variation in the type of housing on offer, complex management issues and a decrease in the number of local shops. The disproportionate amount of cheap rental accommodation on offer leads people who can move away to do so, so that only the more underprivileged population groups remain. The objective of the urban redevelopment scheme is to strengthen or emphasise the positive aspects of the borough and to improve on its weaknesses. In summary, to help people progress. The underlying principle of the city borough and the housing corporations is that the nuisance and temporary negative effects experienced by residents and businesses as a result of renovation in Geuzenveld Zuid, Buurt Ne9en, Buurt 5 and Slotermeer Buurt 1, 2 and 3 should be minimised as much as possible. Even during the renovation process accessibility, quality of life, safety and good information services should be maintained.this will require some extra effort. When people move out networks are broken, meeting places disappear and the local area feels more and more empty. There is a reduction in social cohesion and an increased feeling of insecurity. Social activities can give the people who stay behind the feeling that it is still their area and ensure that, despite all the problems, people still enjoy living there. Transitional Social Management Transitional social management encompasses the measures aimed at improving security, social cohesion and cooperation (local networks). The clients are the city borough and the housing corporations. The transitional social management department carries out activities which supplement the normal management activities. These activities are primarily focused on maintaining and strengthening the quality of life and the empowerment of current and new residents in an area. The transitional social management department largely does this in response to signals from the local community. In community projects a relationship is established between the area, the residents and what is going to take place. 6
