Elder abuse is defined as any abuse and neglect of a person age 60 and over by a caregiver or another person. It can be intentional or unintentional and can occur in any setting including a home, skilled nursing facility, rehab, assisted living, independent living, etc. There are seven types of elder abuse: 1. Physical abuse: Any action that causes pain or injury 2. Emotional abuse: Verbal or nonverbal acts that cause emotional pain or distress, such as harassment, threats, controlling behaviors, and ignoring 3. Confinement: Physically restraining or isolating an older adult 4. Sexual abuse: Any sexual activity with an older adult who does not consent, is forced, or does not have the mental capacity to understand 5. Willful deprivation: Intentional denial of basic needs (food, water, medical care, shelter, or other assistance) 6. Passive neglect : Unintentional failure to provide an older adult with basic needs (food, water, medical care, shelter, or other assistance) 7. Financial abuse: Withholding or misusing an older adult s finances, property or assets. 3 Adult Day Services P A G E 3 West Suburban Senior Services Adult Day Care Program is a planned program of activities designed to promote well being through social and health related services. WSSS operate during daytime hours Monday-Fridays, in a safe, supportive, cheerful, environment. WSSS Adult Day Care Center is primarily two fold. -To provide older adults an opportunity to get out of the house and receive both mental and social stimulation. -To give caregivers a much needed break in which to attend to personal needs or simply to relax or rest. Here are some of the activities we provide: Arts and Crafts Sing-a-longs Mental Stimulation (Bingo) Exercise Movies Birthday Celebrations Field Trips ( spring and summer only) Pet Therapy Wellness Groups Due to circumstances at this time we are down a driver. Expect delays. SAGE Program Offers Education Ambassador SAGE West Suburban Senior Services Program Director Eric Vironet is now a volunteer education ambassador for the National Resource Center on LGBT Aging, the educational arm of SAGE (Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders). Eric joins 12 other volunteer ambassadors in Illinois in offering a free hour long introductory presentation about LGBT aging issues to area organizations and agencies who are interested in training their staff. The training examines the unique history and needs of LGBT older adults and how aging service providers can create an environment which allows all older adults to access programs and services to improve their health and well-being, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. 4 P A G E 4 B I N G O Bingo is played on Mondays and Thursdays at the Center in Bellwood from 12:15pm- 1:15pm. There is a fee. L E G A L C L I N I C The Center for Disability and Elder Law (CDEL) hosts a monthly legal clinic at the Senior Center. Seniors may receive free assistance with a variety of legal (Non-Criminal) matters. She will motivate you to move and stretch! If you prefer Yoga, join the instructor on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 9:30am. Exercise classes are taught by volunteers so they are free of charge. 5 P A G E 5 Celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. ( ) was a Baptist minister and social activist who played a key role in the American civil rights movement from the mid-1950s until his assassination in Inspired by advocates of nonviolence such as Mahatma Gandhi, King sought equality for African Americans, the economically disadvantaged and victims of injustice through peaceful protest. He was the driving force behind watershed events such as the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the March on Washington, which helped bring about such landmark legislation as the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 and is remembered each year on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a U.S. federal holiday since Courtesy of History.com: (

WSSS does not have a membership fee, and area senior citizens are welcome to attend any and all events that they find interesting.
