1 HSS 114 INTRODUCTION TO PHYSICAL THERAPY s and s, College Park Center, Rm 210, 12:00-12:50 pm or 1:30-2:20 pm (as assigned) 1 credit hour Instructors, NCS, C/NDT College Park Center: Rm 209B College Park Center: Rm 207F Course Description Office: Office: HSS 114 Introduction to Physical Therapy explores the many facets of the profession of physical therapy. Guest speakers and documents of the profession and its professional organization will highlight the in various settings and roles that comprise the continuum of physical therapy care, review the profession s history, and provide insight into the future of PT. HSS114 also introduces several health professions that physical therapists work with to better understand the responsibilities of a PT. This also allows for exposure to other health related professions as possible career options. Finally, HSS 114, explores graduate professional education for health related professions, with emphasis on preparing for successful entrance into Doctor of Physical Therapy programs. Course Grade Your final grade is based upon your attendance, five projects, and final exam. The amount each contributes to your grade and the grading scale is noted below. 2 Isidore This course will use Isidore for receiving and submitting assignments, announcements, grade book, quizzes, and possibly for the final examination. You will login by going to and entering your novel username and password. You are responsible for logging in at least once a week to receive any announcements that may be posted. ALL of your assignments will be turned in using Isidore. HSS 114 INTRODUCTION TO PHYSICAL THERAPY Course Objectives Upon successful completion of this course, the student shall be able to: I. Discuss the history of the physical therapy profession. II. III. IV. Discuss the role of today s physical therapist in the variety of settings that comprise the continuum of physical therapy care. Discuss how the role of the physical therapist may change in the future. Discuss the academic requirements for consideration of entrance into graduate schools for physical therapy. V. Discuss the need for and type of volunteer work required for successful entrance into graduate school programs in physical therapy. VI. VII. VIII. IX. Identify one extra-curricular activity of interest to pursue this calendar year that may provide insight into some aspect of physical therapy Compare and contrast physical therapy with other medical/ allied health professions Identify and use major physical therapy periodicals, literature, resources. Demonstrate understanding of political implications on the practice of physical therapy. PT Admissions Assignment Prior to your lecture on graduate school admissions, you will research three graduate physical therapy programs you are interested in and print out the prerequisites required for entrance into each individual program. Compare these lists to the curriculum of the pre-physical therapy degree at The University of Dayton and list those requirements that are not required at UD. Also list any volunteer hours you may have accumulated that will count towards each program and a detailed plan when you will complete the volunteer requirement. Due September 4. Three points will be awarded for each of the 3 listings of prerequisites, the comparison to UD s program and a detailed plan to accomplish the required volunteer hours for your selected graduate school program. An additional point will be awarded for neatness and overall quality. The same procedure for late assignments applies to this project.

3 Reflection on Emmanuel s Gift The film Emmanuel s Gift will be viewed by each student on Isidore. Write a 1 page single spaced (Times New Roman 12 point font) reflection about the impact that the film has had on you and your view of yourself as a future physical therapist. Include your views about the role that therapists should or should not play as activists. This paper is worth toward your final grade. Five points are for writing style, grammar, and spelling. The remaining 5 points are for the quality and depth of your reflection. I m looking for evidence that you really did spend time thinking things through and applying your thoughts to yourself. A simple I think activism is great and everybody should do it will not work. Due October 9th. Graduate School Oral Presentation In order to familiarize you for the requirements of graduate schools and practice in oral presentations required in all graduate professional programs, you will each be required to choose one graduate school that you would be interested in attending (PT, Chiropractic, Medical, Dental School, etc.). You will work as a trio and choose a unique type of school to expose you to as many different schools and locations as possible. On the class held August 30th, we will have a discussion where you will determine which school you wish to present. The presentations will be given on September 18 th and 20th. Presentations are limited to 5 minutes apiece. Those who have the last choices with respect to schools will be given first choice on time and date to present. The things that I believe should be covered should include (but not be limited to): location, type of degree conferred, length of program, entrance requirements/prerequisites, how courses are set up (curriculum), costs, % of graduates passing licensure exams, etc. Do not limit yourself to just these categories; use these as a jumping off point. This project will be worth. You will be given two points for clearly explaining the program s curriculum, two points for outlining prerequisites, two points for being the class expert on the school (meaning knowing where it is, what the class sizes are, how long the school has been around, etc), and four points for overall quality of the presentation. YOU MUST PRESENT USING POWERPOINT AND HAVE NO MORE THAN 12 SLIDES. The PowerPoints are due on September 13th. APTA Assignment The American Physical Therapy Website, APTA.org, has a wealth of information reflecting physical therapy as a profession. Use this website to complete the upcoming assignment reflecting the role of the APTA as well as resources available from the organization. Due August 30th. Resume Project Looking into the future as a senior at University of Dayton, professionally prepare a resume reflecting your accomplishments to guarantee a position in a graduate physical therapy program. Please be thorough, as this will be the blueprint for you to effectively plan your pre-physical therapy years. Your resume must be no more than one page, using Times New Roman 12 point font and single spacing. Due September 27th.

4 This project is worth toward your final grade. You will receive five points for overall quality, two points for proper resume form, three points for demonstrating knowledge of the qualities needed to achieve entrance to graduate programs. You will have a final exam to assess how well you have met the course objectives. This will be an open notebook exam and will count for 40 points toward your course grade. The exam will address all of the nine course objectives. In addition, any information provided by guest speakers and handouts are subject to exam questions. FYI attend, take notes and ask questions!!! The test will either be held in class during finals week or on Isidore due by the end of finals week. I will announce the plan as soon as I know. Late Assignments All assignments must be submitted on Isidore by 11:55 PM on the date specified. All late assignments will be eligible for no more than 50% of the posted points regardless of the reason that the assignment is late.
