3 Education, Training and Translation Education, Training and Translation NISCAIR is equipped with the necessary facilities and manpower to train and prepare science communicators, R&D personnel and library and information professionals for meeting the challenges of current times. NISCAIR s Human Resource Development programmes conducted by Education, Training and Translation Group (ETTG) can be broadly categorized as follows: Associateship in Information Science The institute has been offering an advanced master s degree level course in Documentation and Reprography since 1964, which was renamed in 1977 as Associateship in Information Science (AIS). The course has been revised and redesigned to incorporate the expanding dimensions of documentation and information science to suit the changing information needs of the country as well as other developing countries. From the academic session , one seat has been earmarked for each nation in the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). The course is run under the overall guidance of the Board of Studies, which consists of eminent information professionals, industry personnel and academicians of the country. The objective is to train the students in techniques of information handling and management with special emphasis on application of information technology for designing, implementing, operating and managing information systems. An important feature of this two - year course is the periodic holding of colloquia and seminars, which provide opportunities to students for debating, articulation and collective thinking. Besides, the students are also given the opportunity to participate in seminars, workshops and short-term courses conducted by NISCAIR from time to time. Opportunities are provided to the students to visit, observe and study the working of institutions such as documentation and information centers, libraries and government departments connected with industrial development, planning, etc. The course comprises theory classes, practicals, training in different divisions, seminars and the final examination in the first year. In the second year, research work is assigned to students and they are required to submit a dissertation. For the batch, 22 students (19 Indian and one each from Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka) have joined the AIS Course that commenced from September 20, The Indian students were admitted on the basis of qualifications, written test and interview. The students from Maldives, Nepal, Sri Lanka and one student from India have been sponsored by the SAARC Documentation Centre (SDC). Short-Term Courses NISCAIR organizes short-term courses on various topics, 93

4 94 Annual Report particularly in areas of information technology, computer applications and communication. During the year, NISCAIR organized two courses on Information Technology for Information Management, two courses on Library Automation and Resource sharing, one course each on Scientific Paper Writing and on WINISIS. In all, six short-term courses were organized. The first short-term course on Information Technology for Information Management was organized during 17April-19 May 2006 and the second during 28- August -29 September These courses were exclusively conducted for the candidates sponsored by SAARC Documentation Centre (SDC). The first course was attended by 13 participants and the second course was attended by 14 participants. The first short-term course on Library Automation and Resources A view of the Classroom Sharing was held during July, Twelve participants attended the course. Second course was organized during January, Thirty participants attended the course. Short-term course on Scientific Paper Writing was conducted during August 21-25, Four participants attended the course. Short-term course on WINISIS was organized during December 14-20, Ten participants sponsored by SDC and one participant (non-sponsored) attended the course. Attachment Training Programmes NISCAIR organizes regularly onthe-job training or attachment training programmes for persons requiring specialized training in the field of information science, information management, information technology and related activities. During the year, NISCAIR organized two Attachment Training Programmes for SDC sponsored candidates on Information Technology for Information Management during April 17 - July 14, 2006 and August 28 - November 24, Each programme was attended by four participants. 5 Education, Training and Translation during May 29-June 02, Thirty-eight participants (MLISc students) attended this programme. IGNOU Sponsored Courses NISCAIR has been identified as the Programme Study Centre for the following IGNOU sponsored programmes: i) Master in Computer Applications (MCA). ii) Master in Library and Information Science (MLISc). iii) Bachelor in Library and Information Science (BLISc). NISCAIR has the responsibility of organizing and conducting the following components of the above mentioned programmes: Theory Counselling Practical Training Seminars/Projects Practical Examination Evaluation of Assignments Six hundred and twenty-one students were trained in MCA. In MLISc/BLISc, 113 and 142 students were admitted, respectively. About 843 students appeared in Term End Practical Examination. The faculty members for these courses were from NISCAIR, IGNOU and other institutions. 6 Annual Report Translation and Interpretation Services Translation Service NISCAIR provides translation of S & T publications from Japanese language to English, on request. Over 100 orders were executed from which 1357 pages were translated during the year. The translation work also included the authentication of Japanese to English translation for legal purposes. Interpretation Service During the period, a total of 40 interpretation assignments in Japanese language were carried out. Some of them are listed below. (a) Head of State Level Meeting NISCAIR has provided interpretation services for the President and Prime Minister of the country. Thisincluded accompanying the Prime Minister to Japan as official interpreter during his state visit to Japan in December 2006 and providing the interpretation services during official meetings, interviews and discussion on the floor of the Japanese Diet. (b) Conference Interpretation (i) (ii) (iii) Meetings of Government level delegation from Japan with Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Environment and Forest, Ministry of Steel, Ministry of Power, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Ministry of Agriculture, Tax Department, Patent Office, etc. Defence Minister & Finance Minister level dialogue between India and Japan. Interview of JETRO chief during opening of Business Support Centre. (iv) Meeting of Delhi and Tokyo Governments. (v) Meeting of Japanese delegation led by former Agriculture Minister with Commerce and Industry Minister. (vi) (vii) Japanese IT Minister meeting with Indian IT Minister and also at Prasar Bharati. Lectures by the Chief Priest of historical Todaiji temple of Japan. (viii) Green Aid Plan (GAP) policy dialogue between India and Japan Governments. (ix) Toyota brain storming session on Toyota s strategy to enter small car market in India. (x) Japan Chamber of Commerce and FICCI seminar on Indo-Japan business relations and others. (c) Industrial Interpretation (i) TQM examination at Mahindra & Mahindra and Asahi Glass India Ltd. (ii) Technical visits to industries in the field of automobiles, electronics, steel and component manufacturing such as Maruti-Suzuki, Toyota, Honda and Bokharo. 96
