6 GIVER 1 INSPIRED Peter comes across an example of the impact of giving locally through the Keep the Change for Microfinancing and is inspired. 2 RESEARCH He goes online to research the concept and reads about more local projects and people that have benefitted from the microloans. Peter is pleased he has finally found the solution to how he can contribute to the community in a low risk and easy way. 3 SIGN UP Peter sign up with the service provider. He indicates his interests, sets his saving goals, his spending limits and time period for repayment. Here you can really start to see the financially empowerment in the idea, because the exercise helps to financially empower Peter (he is setting saving goals, etc) but he in turn enables those who benefit from his loan to be more financially empowered. 4 CHOOSE PROJECT Based on Peter s profile, the service provider suggest relevant projects with like minded people in Peter s community. 5 TRACK PROGRESS Peter receives updates and notifications on the project(s) he s funding, regarding the health of the project as well as repayment status. Peter shares the updates with his friends, both promoting the Keep the Change for microfinancing initiative, as well as Jessy s dog walking business. 6 LOAN IS REPAID The loan is repaid within the indicated timeframe. The Giver has access to the money either to take back, or reinvest in a new local initiative.

7 RECEIVER 1 AWARENESS Jessy hears about the opportunity to get a microloan from someone local during her save the park group. 2 RESEARCH She finds out about the concept of Keep the Change for microfinancing and is delighted to hear that she is eligible for a microloan. 3 MAKE A PLAN She gets help from her uncle to set up a business plan for a dog walking business, and applies for a microloan. Someone from the service provider also helps her refine her plan in order to get the most benefit from the loan and repayment structure. 4 PUBLISH PROJECT Based on the service provider s perimeters, it is established how much money is made available to invest in Jessy s dog walking business. She puts the project online, and communicates with locals who are invested in investing in her project. 5 SHOW IMPACT Jessy communicates the impact of the loan on her day to day business and the growth of the dog walking business. She shares her stories with the givers and community, who continuously help her with useful tips and advice. She is so excited about how much the small investment has enabled her to build her future. 6 PAY IT FORWARD Jessy has repaid the loan completely, as her dog walking business is now profitable and selfsustaining. She helps others in the community with her knowledge and financial literacy, and plans in the future to also start saving money through the Keep the Change for microfinancing initiative. This last part is important, as it closes the cycle of givers and receivers, which is important in making the initiative work within a local community.
