1 Welcome Welcome to Hickory, North Carolina! Located in, Hickory is the economic, social, and cultural center of the Catawba Valley. According to 2005 statistics, Hickory is the 6th largest metropolitan area in North Carolina with a population of 355,654. This metropolitan area is also called the Unifour and includes the counties of Catawba, Alexander, Burke, and Caldwell. Three times an All-America City including in 2007, and the recipient of numerous awards, Hickory continues to attract tourists, families, and industries to this part of the state. Guide for Newcomers Edition Hickory International Council City of Hickory PO Box 398 Hickory NC ext According to the 2005 data, 39 % of the Hickory Metro Area s population growth from 2000 to 2005 was the result of international migration. The two largest international groups, Asian and Hispanic, total almost 12% of the local population and are strong indicators of the international nature of our communities. Considering the above data, the Mayor s Hickory International Council (HIC), a commission of the City of Hickory, facilitates the implementation of measures that allow the Hickory area to become more internationally friendly. The work plans of the Council are geared toward this goal and include, among others, the development of this Newcomer Information Guide, the unveiling of a multilingual welcome sign on the Square in Hickory this past May, and continuing the current tradition of hosting an International Spring Fest once a year. Whether you are a newcomer to the Hickory area or a resident for some time, I believe that the activities of the HIC will prove to be essential in promoting goodwill, improving the quality of life, and making Hickory a more international city.
