Clinical/Health and Forensic Career Panel Thursday 11 February 2016 School of Psychological Sciences In partnership with The University of Manchester Alumni Association and Careers Service
Welcome Welcome to our Career Panel event. It gives you the opportunity to talk to former students who studied similar subjects to you, and have gone on to be successful in their careers. You will meet alumni at different stages of their career who are able to offer advice and guidance. You will have the opportunity to ask them questions about their individual career paths. At the end of the session, we will break and you will have the opportunity to network with our alumni informally. Here you can ask follow up questions, seek additional advice and exchange contact information. Timetable 17:00-17:15 Registration and refreshments 17:15-17:20 Welcome talk 17:20-17:45 Alumni introductions 17:45-18:30 Question and Answer session 18:30-19:00 Networking Making the most of the event Before the event Research the alumni - in this guide you will find information about the alumni attending the event including their career timeline. What do you want to know - think about what you want to get out of the event, who you re particularly interested in meeting and what you need to ask about their individual career path. During the event Exchange contact details - don t be afraid to ask for contact details, if there s someone you d like to stay in contact with, ask them for an address or phone number. After the event Get LinkedIn - now that you ve met some people working in the sector you re interested in, connect with them on LinkedIn and discover more about them and their employers. Prompts and possible questions to ask What is a typical day like in your role? How did you get started in this role? What kind of work experience would be helpful? What is the selection process like? What are the key skills needed for this role? What is the working environment like? What do you enjoy most about this role? What is the most challenging part of your role? Where did you look for work? Is there any other advice you could give someone interested in this career path?
Emily Haythornthwaite BSc (Hons) Psychology 2013 MSc (Hons) Forensic Psychology Find me on LinkedIn Clinical Mental Health Practitioner and PhD Student The University of Manchester My advice would be to grab every work opportunity offered. Be proactive, always be on the look-out, don t be afraid to ask for work experience! You have to reach for it. Don t think some work experience is beneath you, you may have to start at the bottom and work up. Be realistic. Clinical Mental Health Practitioner Mental Health Care Support Worker Graduated from University of Central Lancashire Worked as a Research Team Assistant at Primary Care Research Centre (Initially Volunteer and then paid) Volunteer at Youth Offending Team Graduated from University of Manchester Assistant Psychologist (Initially Volunteer and then paid) Sophie Brown BSc(Hons) Psychology 2013 Psychological Well-being Practitioner Sunderland NTW NHS Don t rush through getting experience just for application purposes. I found spending three years in a fairly new therapy area taught me so much in therapeutic alliance; something which can t really be taught. So don t be afraid to spend more time within that role because the experience is really valuable to any clinical role you decide to choose as a career path. Mentor for trainee PWPs and co-lectured on a few lectures at Newcastle University on the PWP course Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner, started additional training in eating disorders, older adults and long term physical conditions Volunteered with St. John ambulance in varied roles Worked in computerised cognitive behavioural therapy Gained 2:1 degree in Psychology Trainee Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner
Lee Mulligan Clinical Psychology Doctorate (ClinPsyD) Chartered Clinical Psychologist Greater Manchester West Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust Try and gain as much practical experience as you can and don t be afraid to approach people for voluntary positions - for the ClinPsyD course, experience of working with people who have mental health problems is just as important as university grades. Starting working as a Clinical Psychologist in the NHS 2015 Graduated from the Manchester ClinPsyD course 2008 Graduated with a BSc(Hons) in Psychology Amy Degnan BSc(Hons) Psychology 2010 MSc Clinical & Health Psychology 2012 PhD Clinical Psychology and Research Project Manager/Senior Research Assistant 2010 Graduated with an MSc in Clinical & Health Psychology Find me on LinkedIn 2010 Assistant Clinical Psychologist on the RECOVERY Programme The University of Manchester Get as much clinical and research experience as you can. There are plenty of opportunities to develop skills in these areas. You can always find voluntary positions at local mental health services and charities. Speak to your tutors as they are often searching for reliable volunteers to work on psychological research studies. It is easy to get disheartened by knockbacks or competition. My advice would be to persevere and try to enjoy every step of the way it is definitely worth it! BSc (Hons) Psychology at the UoM Mental Health Support Worker and undertook various voluntary posts at Universities and local Mental Health Services MSc Clinical and Health Psychology at UoM PhD Clinical Psychology, UoM Research Project Manager/ Senior Research Assistant, 3 year NIHR-funded Programme Grant, Manchester Mental Health and Social Care Trust/UoM 2013 Research Project Manager, R&D Department, Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust
Jessica Lomas BSc(Hons) Psychology 2015 Forensic Psychology and Mental Health MSc student The University of Manchester Take up as many relevant experience opportunities you have time for. Summer may be a good time for this, but be aware that some things can take a while to get sorted and you may not start straight away. Don t be afraid to contact people you might be interested in volunteering with directly, it shows you are keen. Recently gained placement at Wathwood secure hospital within the Psychology department Currently undertaking training as a Mental Health Recovery Worker Volunteered at Circles and Support of Accountability during my undergraduate degree Graduated in 2015 Began MSc in Forensic Psychology and Mental Health 2015 Jane Lawton BSc(Hons) Psychology 2001 MPhil Psychology 2004 Clinical Psychologist Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust All lived experiences are useful to working as a clinical psychologist so consider what your experiences have provided you with. It can be hard work to be accepted on to the doctorate training but persist and do your research about which courses interest you. Network with other people seeking the same career as these people will be your biggest source of information and support Graduated with BSc (Hons) Psychology Completed part time MPhil and gained work experience as Assistant Psychologist/Research Assistant Completed doctorate in Clinical psychology present Lead psychologist in NHS Alcohol Assertive Outreach Team Worked in United Arab Emirates (Dubai) in Community Health Centre Worked in NHS within services for people with complex, severe and long standing difficulties
