2 I have 25+ years in Secondary & Post-Secondary Education with the past 7+ Years involved in Career and Technical Education and Workforce/Economic Development endeavors I have an extensive background in CTE Curriculum & Program Development with an emphasis in Community Partnerships for employment opportunities as well as educating students and parents on career pathways to success at both High School and Community College levels Experience in developing Fast Track Training Programs with internship/clinical components for displaced workers/new students in order to fill employment gaps in regions to meet employer needs 3/17/2015 CMC 2

4 From 2014 Talent Survey Shortage Results: Skilled trade workers, engineers, IT staff and nurses are some of the top jobs employers are having trouble filling in the U.S. CTE plays a critical role in training workers in these areas. From 2014 Out of Inventory: Skills Shortage Threatens Growth for US Manufacturing More than 75 percent of manufacturers report a moderate to severe skills shortage, resulting in an increase in overtime costs and an annual loss of 11 percent of earnings CTE plays a vital role in helping American businesses close this gap by building a competitive workforce for the 21st century. From Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce (2013) Middle-skill jobs, jobs that require education and training beyond high school but less than a bachelor s degree, are a significant part of the economy. Of the 55 million job openings created by 2020, 30% will require some college or a 2-Year associate degree. 3/17/2015 CMC 4

5 BUSINESS/INDUSTRY NEED: 1. Base level skills where an individual can come in and be a valued employee of the organization from Day People with abilities to work in a job setting from Day 1 with the ability to be retrained to specific needs for organizational operation. 3. Individuals that can fill specific needs to a job description that the employer needs filled right now. EDUCATION WANTS: 1. To prepare students for their future endeavors whether they go to college or prepare for a viable career opportunity upon their graduation. 2. To expose students to multiple exploration opportunities so they can make informed decisions for their futures and paths in life 3. To develop the necessary skills and abilities in our students so they have multiple opportunities to pursue their dreams upon graduation not the end but the beginning of their lifelong journey. 4. 6 QUESTION Are Business/Industry Needs and Educational Wants mutually exclusive agendas? This is not an US V. THEM issue! This is a WE issue as to how we can make this work for the betterment of our areas, our schools and our employers. 3/17/2015 CMC 6

7 CTE_WORKS_FACT_SHEET%202014%20(1).PDF For High School Students: 1. 80% of students taking a college preparatory academic curriculum with rigorous CTE met college and career readiness goals (compared to 63% for students taking the same academic core who did not experience rigorous CTE) 2. The average high school graduation rate in 2008 for students concentrating in CTE programs was 90% (compared to 75% nationwide graduation rate) For Post-Secondary Students: 1. 43% of young workers with licenses/certificates earn more than those with an Associate degree 2. 27% of young workers with licenses/certificates earn more than those with a Bachelor s degree 3. 31% of young workers with Associate degrees earn more than those with a Bachelor s degree. 4. Postsecondary CTE concentrators achieve significantly higher earnings than those who majored in academic fields, esp. in an industry related to their program of study. 3/17/2015 CMC 7

13 Continue the dialogue to expand opportunities in alignment with the state expectations for Education and Workforce Development Educate parents, students, business/industry and education on the importance of CTE to opportunities for individuals for lifelong earning and learning Address social issues/soft skills that impact the ability of individuals to meet workforce expectations: Drug Testing, Displaced Workers, Remediation/Training Issues, Retention/Promotional Opportunities, Professional Development/ Growth Opportunities, Problem Solving/Critical Thinking, etc. 3/17/2015 CMC 13
