Austin (0-0, 0-0 Southland) as these two old rivals meet for the 33rd time. This game was originally scheduled to be played in Ruston but due to fall graduation ceremonies taking place at the Thomas Assembly Center this weekend, it was moved to the William R. Johnson Coliseum. Next year s match-up will be in Ruston. This game is a match-up of two of the winningest programs in the history of women s basketball as LA Tech (1,043) ranks No. 2 and Stephen F. Austin (964) ranks No. 5. About Today s Opponent One year after posting a record and capturing a share of the Southland Conference regular season title, Stephen F. Austin is the preseason favorite according to the league coaches and media to repeat the feat. The Ladyjacks return four of their top players, including first team all-conference selection Porsha Roberts and and second team honoree Brittney Matthew. Roberts is the reigning SLC Defensive Player of the Year and averaged 17.0 points and 8.1 rebounds per game last season. Matthews started only 17 games last year before her season was cut short by injury. She averaged 12.2 points per game prior to her injury. Head coach Brandon Schneider enters his fifth season in Nacogdoches where he has compiled a mark. After being upset in last year s SLC Tournament, the Ladyjacks won three games in the Women s Basketball Invitation Tournament (WBIT) where they advanced to the championship game before losing to Illinois-Chicago. Just two weeks later, the University announced the hiring of Tyler Summitt in a press conference held on April 2. Summitt, the 24-year-old son of legendary Tennessee Hall of Fame coach Pat Summitt, comes to Ruston after serving as an assistant coach at Marquette for the past two seasons. He is the sixth head coach in LA Tech women s basketball history, following in the footsteps of Sonja Hogg, Leon Barmore, Kurt Budke, Chris Long and Weatherspoon. Youngest Division I Head Coach Tyler Summitt is the youngest Division I head coach in the country... and its not even close. Summitt turned 24 on Sept. 21 of this year. The next youngest head coach in Division I women s basketball is Omaha s Brittany Lange who will turn 28 on the last day of this year. HEAD COACH TYLER SUMMITT When Tyler Summitt was introduced April 2 as the sixth head coach in Louisiana Tech women s basketball history, it wasn t the first time that the 23-year-old had been to Ruston. Tyler, the son of legendary Hall of Fame coach Pat Summitt, followed the Tennessee Lady Vols and his mother to the Thomas Assembly Center numerous times during the course of one of the greatest rivalries in the history of the women s game. Louisiana Tech Athletics Director Tommy McClelland made a bold hire that could pay huge dividends for a Lady Techster program that ranks second all-time in wins (1,043), trailing only Tennessee. Tyler s challenge is to rebuild the storied program back into a conference contender and annual NCAA Tournament participant. Tech s 27 NCAA Tournament appearances ranks fourth all-time although the Lady Techsters have not made an appearance since Tyler spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach at Marquette University under head coach Terri Mitchell where he oversaw the team s offense while overseeing skill development for every position. He also served as the scouting coordinator. In addition to his coaching duties in the collegiate ranks, Tyler is also a co-founder and board member of The Pat Summitt Foundation, participates in public speaking engagements and is active in church with his wife. He graduated from the University of Tennessee Chancellor s Honors Program where he was a member of the Tennessee men s basketball team for two seasons, learning from Cuonzo Martin and Bruce Pearl. Tyler also served as a student assistant coach for his mother and the Tennessee women s basketball program. He was actively involved in the 2007 through 2009 seasons for the Tennessee women, two of which resulted in national championships. He was the head coach of numerous AAU teams in Tennessee, including the Tennessee Fury 17U who went on to win the State Championship. He has also been a head coach at the Pat Summitt, Cuonzo Martin and Bruce Pearl Summer Camps from Tyler married his high school sweetheart, Anne Dennis ( AnDe ) Ragsdale Summitt, on June 1, Name School Age Birthday Tyler Summitt LA Tech 24 y, 1 mo 9/21/90 Brittany Lange Omaha 27 y, 10 mo 12/31/86 DeUnna Hendrix High Point 30 y, 0 mo 10/27/84 Matt Insell Ole Miss 32 y, 1 mo 9/22/ ROSTER No. Name Ht. DeMoss, who serves as the associate head coach for the Lady Techsters, was the starting point guard on the first three Lady Techster teams ever ( ). DeMoss brings a treasure chest full of basketball coaching experience to Ruston as she boasts 35-years of the collegiate coaching experience, including 20 years as an assistant and associate head coach at the University of Tennessee. DeMoss spent the past two years as an assistant coach with the WNBA s Indiana Fever, helping guide the franchise to the 2012 WNBA championhip. She was a part of six national championships and 12 Final Four teams at Tennessee before reviving the Kentucky Wildcats program where she was named the 2006 SEC Coach of the Year during her four years as the head coach Memphis Assistant Coach University of Florida Head Coach Auburn University Assistant Coach University of Tennessee Assistant/Associate HC University of Kentucky Head Coach University of Texas Associate Head Coach University of Tennessee Associate Head Coach Indiana Fever (WNBA) Assistant Coach It All Started With a Meeting Mickie DeMoss is more than just the first point guard in the history of the Louisiana Tech Lady Techster program. She was instrumental in the women s basketball program starting back in As an undergraduate student in Ruston, DeMoss joined a physical education teacher by the name of Sonja Hogg in then President F. Jay Taylor s office. Hogg, who became the first coach in the history of the program and who is enshrined in the Women s Basketball Hall of Fame in Knoxville, and DeMoss convinced Dr. Taylor to start and fund the Lady Techster program. The rest is history. Summitt and DeMoss As a child growing up with the Tennessee Lady Vols basketball program, Tyler Summitt developed a close relationship with Mickie DeMoss, who served as an assistant for Pat Summitt for two decades in Knoxville. However, the relationship began when Tyler was born... as DeMoss was present in the room when Pat Summitt gave birth to Tyler. Tennessee Ties Tyler Summitt and Mickie DeMoss aren t the only two coaches on the Lady Techsters with Tennessee ties. Assistant coaches Bernitha Johnson and Amber Smith also have a Lady Vols background. Johnson was a manager for Pat Summitt and the Lady Vols during her college days while Smith served as a graduate assistant at Tennessee last year. Lady Techster Standards Family. Belief. Toughness. Competition. Character. These are the five standards the Lady Techster basketball program will lean on. Below are direct exerpts out of Tyler Summitt s coaching materials that he shares with the team. Belief -- We must believe in ourselves and believe in those around us before any success can happen. Everyone in our program will continually gain confidence and walk like a champion in every area of their lives. Family -- We will truly learn to sacrifice for one another and hold each other accountable. The family mindset goes beyond our team and to the University. We will commit each day to having a family first and University first mindset. Character -- Character is doing things the right way. Long-term success can not happen without character. As a whole, our program will show honesty and class in all that we do. Competition -- A competitor is someone who strives for an objective. Our objective is simple: Be the best we can be. We will place a higher importance on competing against ourselves than on competing against others. 3

Tech s seniors include Kanedria Andrews, Whitney Frazier, Savanna Langston, Kelia Shelton and Chrisstasia Walter. Welcome Wingate Junior forward Brandi Wingate will finally make her Division I college debut this year. Wingate was a highly-recruited prep star at Howard High School in Columbia, Maryland before knee injuries ultimately sidelined her college career. She lettered one year at Northwest Florida State ( ) before then missing the next two years with additional knee injuries. She signed with LA Tech in November of 2012 but was unable to play last season due to academic issues stemming from completing a course at her JC. Wingate was ranked as the No. 2 strong forward (12th overall) by Dan Olson s Collegiate Girls Basketball Report. NBA Dad Brandi Wingate comes from a basketball family. Her father, David Wingate, was an All-American for the Georgetown Hoyas helping lead the program to the 1984 NCAA National Title. He finished his career at Georgetown as the program s third all-time leading scorer. Frazier Earns Preseason All-CUSA Honors Louisiana Tech senior Whitney Frazier was one of eight players voted to the preseason all-conference USA team by the league coaches. The honor should come as no surprise. Frazier was a second team all-league performer last year as a junior when she averaged 16.2 points and 9.8 rebounds per contest. However, Frazier is the ONLY returning allleague performer out of 16 (8 first team, 8 second team) that returns to a Conference USA roster this year. Austin 61 Dec. 29, 2009 * San Antonio, Texas SAN ANTONIO - Adrienne Johnson scored 20 points while Shanavia Dowdell added 14 points and 16 rebounds to lead Louisiana Tech to a win over Stephen F. Austin in the first game of the 2009 UTSA New Year s Classic at the Convocation Center Tuesday evening. However, it was a couple of key plays by junior guard Whitney Jones late that propelled the Lady Techsters (7-3) to the four-point victory. After seeing SFA (5-4) storm back from a 17-point second half deficit to take its first and only lead of the game at with 1:48 to play on a jumper by Ebony Alexander, Jones sprinted up the court and scored on a fast break layup nine seconds later to give LA Tech a advantage. Jones then blocked a jumper by SFA s Whitney Cormier with 33 seconds to play in the game as Dowdell pulled down the rebound and was fouled. Following two free throws by Dowdell which upped Tech s advantage to 64-61, Jones came up big one final time, forcing Cormier into an off-balance fade-away three-pointer with 21 seconds left. Tech guard Tiawana Pringle pulled down the miss and hit 1-of-2 free throws as Tech pulled away for its seventh victory of the season. Jones late heroics were necessary after LA Tech saw a 17-point lead early in the second half evaporate. A three-pointer by Jones - one of only two made by LA Tech all night - gave the Lady Techsters advantage with 18:57 to play. However, a conventional three-point play by Alexander started a 12-0 Ladyjacks run over the next five minutes as Tech committed seven turnovers and missed all three of its field goal attempts during the timeframe. A Dowdell layup at the 14:23 mark broke the scoreless streak for Tech as the Techsters pushed the advantage back out to as many as nine. With Tech lead with just under 10 minutes to play SFA used a 6-0 run to tie the game at on a pair of free throws by Toni Davis, the first time the game had been tied since the opening tip. With Tech leading on a Johnson free throw with 4:38 to play, both teams went cold before Alexander finally scored with 1:48 to play, giving SFA its only lead of the game and setting up the final heroics for Jones. Tech won despite committing 27 turnovers in the game and allowing 22 offensive rebounds by the smaller SFA Ladyjacks. Jones finished with 13 points and eight rebounds for Tech, which won despite starting point guard Jasmine Bendolph only playing eight minutes and top reserve Tarkeisha Wysinger not touching the floor due to health issues. 8 Academic Excellence Louisiana Tech s student-athletes continue to reach academic progress superlatives as for the seventh straight year the University recorded all-time highs in the most recent Federal Graduation Rate Report released by the NCAA in October. Tech s student-athletes recorded a Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of 81 percent and a Federal Graduation Rate (FGR) of 60 percent, which both were improvements over last year s numbers. Louisiana Tech s 81 percent graduation success rate ranks as the highest in the state among Division I football-playing public institutions, tied with only LSU. LA Tech s graduation success rate is one percentage points higher than last year s (80) and easily outdistances the state average of 69 percent among the other nine Division I football-playing public institutions in the state of Louisiana. Tech also recorded the second highest federal graduation rate of any Division I football-playing public institution in the state at 60 percent, which also bests last year s mark of 59 percent. The GSR and federal rate calculations measure graduation in a six-year time frame from initial college enrollment. Student-athletes who entered college in 1998 were the first to be tracked using the graduation success rate. Thus, the most recent numbers released are based off of student-athletes who entered Louisiana Tech in The success of Louisiana Tech s student-athletes in the classroom was across the board as 14 of the 16 Division I sanctioned athletic programs recorded at least a 70 percent GSR led by men s golf, women s basketball and women s tennis with 100 percent scores. The Lady Techster basketball team s GSR ranked first in the state (tied with Tulane and Centenary) and first in C-USA (tied with Rice and Middle Tennessee). Shelton Makes Return Kelia Shelton returns for her senior year after seeing action in only five games as a junior. Shelton averaged 14.4 points and 6.8 rebounds in the final five games of last year helping the Lady Techsters to a 4-1 mark during that stretch. Shelton played as a freshman at Clemson before transfering to LA Tech. She sat out in before playing in 23 games (averaged 13.6 points, 6.7 rebounds) in She scored a WAC single game record 45 points in a win over UTSA on Feb. 7, 2013, earning the Ann Meyers Drysdale Women s National Player of the Week by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association. However, the Rock Hill, South Carolina native was dismissed from the team in early March (2013) for a violation of team rules. She was allowed to return to the team as a walk-on last year but since Shelton didn t take fall classes (Tech is on the quarter system), she wasn t eligible to play the first 27 games. However, following the completion of the winter quarter, she returned to the court for Tech during the final stretch of last year. Shelton earned her scholarship back this summer as new head coach Tyler Summitt was impressed with her work ethic, attitude and discipline on and off the court. 1,000-Point Club Junior Whitney Frazier hit a milestone Feb. 8 when she scored her 1,000th career point in LA Tech s loss at Marshall. Frazier s jumper with 11:02 to play in the second half were her 1000th and 1001st career point. Frazier became the 41st player in LA Tech history to join this elite club. What They Are Saying About Tyler Summitt Tommy McClelland (Athletics Director at Louisiana Tech) Tyler represents our philosophy of developing champions in the classroom, on the court and in life. He grew up in that championship culture and it is all he knows. His reputation as a great recruiter, a rising young star in the coaching business and a passionate leader is known throughout the nation. We are fortunate to have him lead our women s basketball program into the future. Dr. Les Guice (Louisiana Tech President) Tyler Summitt is an amazingly talented individual with tremendous character and leadership skills that will unquestionably propel him to success in life. I am absolutely thrilled to have him leading our Lady Techsters basketball program and am confident that he can return our program to national prominence. Leon Barmore (Louisiana Tech Lady Techster Head Coach Emeritus) I really respect and appreciate the commitment that President (Les) Guice and (Athletics Director) Tommy McClelland have shown to this program with this hire. They have put the Lady Techster program in the forefront. I met with Tyler (Monday). What I found out in the 45 minutes we spent together was that he truly respects this program. We certainly respect him and his family. In time he will prove to be an outstanding head coach. I know he is 23 years old, but he has been coaching since he was one. I really like the direction we have gone. I think this is a really good hire. I am fired up about it. Bruce Pearl (Head Coach for Auburn Men s Basketball) Tyler is one of the brightest young minds in college basketball. Tyler is so wise beyond his years, understands the game and has a proven system. I would hire him at Auburn if it weren t for this head coaching opportunity at LA Tech. Billie Moore (Former Head Coach for US Olympic Team, UCLA, Cal. State-Fullerton) Tyler has a special gift. He has a talent for teaching, a unique perspective of seeing and understanding the concepts and strategies of the game. Tyler is great with people; he is a tremendous communicator and a natural leader - things that have nothing to do with age. Quite simply, he has `it and there is absolutely no question in my mind that he will be a successful head coach. Cuonzo Marton (Head Coach for Tennessee Men s Basketball) Tyler has a tremendous work ethic and has the basketball knowledge. All his life he s been around the best that ever coached the game so he understands what it takes. Terri Mitchell (Head Coach for Marquette Women s Basketball) Tyler told me, `There s only one environment I know. That is a championship environment, and I will bring that to practice, to work and to games every single day. He absolutely delivered on that promise. He s going to be a star in our profession. Career Scoring List (see full list on page of media guide) 1. Pam Kelly , Janice Lawrence , Angela Turner , Venus Lacy , Adrienne Johnson , Erica Smith-Taylor , Angela Lawson , Shan Moore , Whitney Frazier 2011-present 1, Tia Sossamon , Alisa Burras ,134 Frazier Taking Next Step During the first two years of her collegiate career, Whitney Frazier struggled when the Lady Techsters would face teams from BCS -type conferences. During the course of those first two seasons, Frazier played in a total of 10 games against those schools, averaging only 4.9 points and 2.5 rebounds per game while shooting only 26 percent (16-62) from the field and 56 percent (14-25) from the free throw line. However, as a junior she came into her own. Against Danielle Donehew (Associate Commissioner for WBB at The American Athletic Conference) Tyler Summitt has a talent that is rare to find at any age. His basketball IQ includes lessons from many of our game s legends. He is committed to the student-athlete, excellence, discipline and his family. Tyler is a born leader and will be a successful head coach. I am certain Tyler will leave his fingerprints on our game in his own special way. Dave Hart (Athletic Director for University of Tennessee) Tyler Summitt is a rising star in the coaching profession. He is mature well beyond his years as a young professional. He has superb knowledge of the game of basketball, is a tireless recruiter who connects with prospects and players alike and his passion will galvanize every key University constituent. Joan Cronan (Women s Athletic Director Emeritus for the University of Tennessee) When combining the tradition of LA Tech with the potential of Tyler Summitt, I think you have a winning combination. I have literally known Tyler since birth, and I have been impressed with his maturity and work ethic from an early age. Tyler possesses many wonderful qualities, but the three I most admire are his character, communication skills and Christian values. This hire reflects the tradition of excellence of women s basketball at LA Tech. #WeAreLATech
