1 U.S. News & World Report 2015 Best Colleges ings Summary Report U.S. News World Report releases the Best Colleges ings each fall. These undergraduate rankings are used by students to help them decide where to apply to college. ings are based on criteria such as retention and graduation rates, peer assessments, student selectivity, and faculty and financial resources. This report presents the 2015 U.S. News Best Colleges ings for the University of Tennessee - Knoxville and our peers. Detailed peer rankings, and rankings methodology, are presented in the appendices. This year U.S. News made no changes to the methodology. The University of Tennessee - Knoxville In the 2015 rankings, The University of Tennessee Knoxville (UTK) dropped three places in the public school rankings, from #47 to #50. We also dropped in the national rankings from #101 to #106. In both rankings, UTK is tied with other institutions. Our overall score decreased by four points, from 48 in 2014 to 44 in The University improved in the following areas: graduation and retention rank, six year graduation rate, average freshman retention rate, freshmen in the top 10% of class, and high school counselor assessment. The University regressed in the following areas: faculty resources rank, student selectivity rank, and alumni giving rank. Among public universities, the undergraduate business program ranked 31 st and the undergraduate engineering program ranked 32 nd (up 5 places). Two private institutions are also tied with us: Loyola University at Chicago and University of San Francisco. For the past three years, we have been tied with a large group of public institutions. Most often it has been the University of Nebraska, University of Oklahoma, University of Kansas, and Iowa State University. Other notable changes in the 2015 rankings include: Pennsylvania State University s decrease in the national rankings (11 places) was mainly due to a 13 place decrease in the selectivity rank Purdue University and North Carolina State both moved up 6 places in the national rankings with increases in graduation and retention, student selectivity, and alumni giving Institutions seeing a large slip in the national rankings (more than 10 places) include Pennsylvania State University, Michigan State University, and Auburn University In the public school rankings, UTK tied with Iowa State University, University of Kansas, University of Oklahoma, and the University of Oregon U.S. News 2015 ings Summary p. 3
