2 Island Adventure Celebrating over 21 Years at Camp Fiesta Island We, the 2015 Camp Fiesta Island Staff would like to thank you for choosing to spend your summer with us. This year we have added several merit badges to our program including Signs, Signals and Codes, Composite Material, Salesmanship, Wilderness Survival. On Wednesday we offer the Art, Fingerprinting, and Weather merit badges. As an added bonus this year we will have a shuttle to take participants to Wednesday activities around San Diego such as: our fishing, surfing, and other outof-camp adventures. We have all been working hard to bring to you the highest quality summer camp program that we can provide. This Leader's Guide has been created to help ensure that you will make the most of your week at CFI. We have included schedules, maps, camp rules, and information to ensure a smooth and enjoyable camp experience for your troop. The Camp Fiesta Island Staff is here to serve you and your troop. 4 Featured Program

5 Flying Hull Camp Fiesta Island s Advanced Catamaran Sailing Program is an intensive course for Scouts with sailing experience. They will learn catamaran sailing from start to finish including rigging, rules of the road, navigation, racing techniques, hiking out and flying the hull. The maximum class size is 6. Adults are also welcome to participate if there is space remaining. Must complete the Small Boat Sailing merit badge before attending camp. This program is for Scouts age 14 and above. Nautical Survival Are you looking for a unique and amazing adventure at camp? Do you like a challenge? Come join Camp Fiesta Island s ultimate survival class! Throughout the week Scouts will earn both the Wilderness Survival and Lifesaving merit badges. On Thursday afternoon the Scouts will depart from camp and swim a mile to our shipwrecked island. Using the newly learned survival skills the Scouts will build a shelter and spend the night on a secluded beach. Space is limited and this class fills quickly! This intense, high adventure program has been designed for Scouts 14 and older only. (Class Periods 1 and 2)

6 Personal Water Craft This exciting program teaches safety, basic maintenance, and skill-based handling of this watercraft. The program runs for two time slots during the week. Due to California state law, the program is only available for Scouts age16+. The cost for this program is $190 per participant, which covers the cost of fuel, routine maintenance, craft insurance and repairs. **Adult participants accepted if the class is not full. Call for details Night Paddle Join us as we organize a nightly flotilla to paddle around the bay to view the evening fireworks presented by Sea World from a different perspective. This is guaranteed to be one of the highlights of your stay camp! Participation is limited to one night during the week. For your convenience, kayaking and canoeing are offered everyday during open water and the aquatics staffs are available to demonstrate proper procedure or both watercraft. M-Th. 8:30 p.m.

7 Water Sports In this high-intensity program, scouts will learn the fundamentals of wake-boarding from San Diego s top instructors. The cost per-person is $180. Signupswill be available online beginning May 13 th. Payment is due at the time of registration. All participants must arrive in camp with a complete Surfing/Wake Boarding Waiver. Adults are welcome if space allows. M-Tu and Th- Fri. at 1:00 p.m. Boardsailing BSA Learn to surf the wind in this introductory class that teaches the basics of boardsailing (windsurfing). The program includes safety, entry, exit, and maneuvering skills. Burly Boatswain Do you think you ve got what it takes to be burly? Earn the title of Burly Boatswain by participating in a 4.3 mile run around the island, a night kayak adventure, a mile swim, and the Salty Sea Dog Canoe Expedition. Event times are listed on the day-by-day and below. Age 14+. Tuesday 4:00 p.m. 4.3 Mile Run: (meet at the top of the boat ramp) Wednesday 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., Salty Sea Dog Canoe Expedition Thursday 8:45 p.m. Burley Night Kayak: (meet at the top of the boat ramp) Friday 4:00pm Mile Swim: (must attend all practices).

8 Scuba Merit Badge (Sessions 1-5 Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri and all day Wednesday ) Learn to breathe underwater while earning your PADI Open Water Diver certification. Spend the first half of the week learning principles of SCUBA diving at San Diego s finest dive shop. Finish the week off diving in the Pacific Ocean at some of San Diego s most popular dive sites. Box lunch included each day. Transportation to and from dive sites must be provided by individual units. Each participant will be mailed a packet of home study materials and paperwork that must be completed prior to arrival at camp. Scuba is an additional $265 per participant. Scouts must provide their own Dive Rated Gear (boots, gloves, fins, mask and snorkel) Scouts and Adults are welcome! Age 13+ Xtreme Leaders Tuesday: Swim across the bay Wednesday: Jog around the island Thursday: Canoe Excursion Friday: Kayak adventure For all XTREME leaders out there interested in waking up at 5:30 in the morning to participate in a jog around the island, canoe trip in the bay, swim across the bay and kayak/portage through the bay; this is the program for you! You must complete 3 of the 4 events listed above to qualify as an extreme adult and earn the bragging rights to prove to the youth how extreme you really are! Be sure to bring a coffee mug to camp, as we will be sipping coffee and discussing your stay at CFI early in the morning.

10 Day Time Programs Please note that programs with asterisks (**) require the SPL to register scouts when they attend the SPL meeting on Monday morning with the camp commissioner. ALOHA FRIDAY: Join the Camp Fiesta Island Staff in celebrating ALOHA FRIDAY. Every unit is welcome to wear Hawaiian shirts and accessories to flags in the morning along with the staff. Go classy, with the basic Hawaiian shirt, or go BIG with a shirt, beads, leis, and hula skirts. Aloha Friday kicks off at morning flags. See you all there in your finest Aloha Apparel SPL CHALLENGE: Attention Senior Patrol Leaders! Do you have what it takes to survive the CFI SPL Challenge? Compete in three separate events during the week demonstrating your leadership skills, problem solving skills, and Scout skills. All SPL s are encouraged to represent your troop with honor and pride. Rise to the challenge and take home the prize for your troop! More information will be provided at the Monday morning SPL meeting. **DRAGON BOATING: Monday-Thursday at 4:00p.m. A sport that dates back over 2,000 years, Dragon Boating is the ultimate team building experience. Try your hand at paddling an Asian racing canoe through Mission Bay. Grab a paddle, life jacket, and 19 buddies for some fun under the sun! Patches are available in the trading post for scouts that complete this program.

11 SLUDGE SWIM: Join the staff at 7:000 a.m. on Tuesday and Thursday on the waterfront for the most fun you can have in the water all week! There is no better way to start the day than a brisk dip in the bay. INSTRUCTIONAL SWIM At CFI we love to teach scouts to swim! Non-swimmers and beginners will strengthen their swimming ability. See the Aquatic Director to schedule your instructional swim appointment. MILE SWIM BSA: (Training required throughout the week Prepare for the ultimate swimming experience. The schedule for mile swim is as follows: Tuesday - Thursday: Practice 4:00 waterfront Friday: Mile Swim 6:00 waterfront!

12 OPEN WATER Join us down on the waterfront for open swimming and boating. Some boat use is restricted to Scouts who are enrolled in the class. A buddy is required for all swimming and boating activities. T- Th -F 4:00pm to 5:00pm.and all day Wednesday from 9:00am to 12:00pm and 2:00pm to 5:00pm RAINGUTTER REGATTA The 15th Annual Raingutter Regatta Yacht Race will pit troop against troop and troop against staff in a battle of hot air and high-speed performance. Your troop can spend time preparing your vessel during free time and then compete in the race on Friday afternoon. Actual race requires two representatives from each troop. Each troop will be given a boat kit at the Monday morning SPL Meeting. Friday 4:00 p.m.

13 First Class Knots 4:30 pm Come learn the essential knots that all Scouts need to know. CPR Refresher

14 Evening Programs Totin' Chip (Monday 7:30 p.m.) Learn essential knife, saw and axe handling skills in this hour-long class. Scouts who complete this class will be awarded a Totin Chip card. Patches area available in the trading post for those who complete this class. Scouts Own (Tuesday 7:30 p.m.) A Scout is Reverent and all campers at Camp Fiesta Island are! encouraged to participate in the Scouts Own inter-faith religious service on Tuesday. We will gather in the amphitheater. Movie Night (Tuesday 8:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.) Join us for a Scout-friendly movie. Show up at the Bayview Terrace with a chair or blanket. Firem n Chit (Thursday 7:30 p.m.) Scouts participating in this class learn basic fire safety principles. Class is held at the amphitheater. Patches are available for those who complete this class. Night Time Handicrafts (Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday 8:00 p.m.) Come and try your hand at any of the handicrafts available during free time. It s a great opportunity to work on a crafts merit badge or make a souvenir gift for someone back home. 8:00 p.m. Order of the Arrow (Thursday 8:00 p.m.) All Arrowmen should bring their OA sashes. Thursday night we will recognize those Scouts who are members of the Order of the Arrow.

16 Adult Leaders Training Youth Protection Training (online training) This protects the youth members and you from being in situations where danger or liability could come into play. Safe Swim Defense: (Session 1 Monday) Safe Swim Defense is required to take a troop on any trip where swimming activities will be conducted. Certification is valid for 2 years. This class is available to anyone 18 years or older. Swimming and Water Rescue: (Session 2-4 Monday and Tuesday) This class is comparable to the 2008 and earlier BSA Lifeguard certification. It is strongly recommended that any unit conducting a unit swim or any other water related activity has multiple adults who have this certification. By the end of the course you will be proficient in the following skills: Active and passive drowning victim rescues with and without equipment, cervical spine stabilization, lost bather recovery drill, and various preventative measures that ensure a safe trip. It is also a requirement to not only be classified as a Swimmer (pass your swim test) but to be a strong swimmer as we will be in the water for up to 3 hours at a time. Must attend the Safe Swim Defense class or be currently certified in Safe Swim Defense (its recommended to recertify yourself while at camp) Class is approx. 2 hours in classroom and 4 hours on waterfront. Safety Afloat: (Session 1 Thursday) Safety Afloat is required to take a troop on any float trip. Certification is valid for 2 years. This class is available to anyone 18 years or older. Red Cross CPR/AED & First Aid Training Red Cross certification courses that includes CPR, AED and First Aid. This class involves a $30 fee that that is due before first day of class. Re-Certifications are allowed, and also includea fee.

17 Leader Specific Training Same training as offered by Council, will go along with IOLS to earn the Trained patch. Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS) IOLS is a training program where scoutmasters take the role of the scout in a two daylong campout scenario. Scouters will learn all skills that a scout from Tenderfoot to First Class will need to know, and will learn techniques to help them pass it along. This class includes a participation fee of $20 to cover food and material costs. Paddle Craft Safety: (Session 2-4 Thursday and Friday) Paddle Craft Safety will cover paddling techniques, boat rescue techniques, how to read rivers, and recognize and respond to paddle craft emergencies. Expect to get wet on the first day of class!! Must attend the Safety Afloat class or be currently certified in Safety Afloat (its recommended to re-certify yourself while at camp) (approx. 2 hours in classroom and 4 hours on water) Leave No Trace: (Monday 7:15pm) The Boy Scouts of America has adopted the principles of Leave No Trace, which are easy to learn and apply. As each principle is learned, it should be applied. Every outing and activity should be conducted with Leave No Trace in mind. This is not a certification, its an outdoor ethics awareness course designed to inform the adults so they can pass it on, and quiz their scouts. Nap Safely Every good leader knows the key to success is quality training. Here at CFI we offer NAP ON SAFELY, a program designed to ensure your leaders have been fully trained when it comes to napping at various scouting events and outings. Naps can be dangerous! Don t try napping without proper training. Training begins Tuesday during lunch in the La Jolla conference room. Patches are available in the trading post. Leader Social: (7:30 p.m. Tuesday) Join the Camp Fiesta Island s management team in the La Jolla conference room for snacks and games as we all get to know one another.

18 Scoutmaster Merit Badge (throughout week) This leaders-only adventure will take you to every corner of our island wet and dry. Patches are available for those who complete this program. Xtreme Leaders Program For all XTREME leaders out there interested in waking up at 5:30 in the morning to participate in a jog around the island, canoe trip in the bay, swim across the bay and kayak/por tage through the bay; this is the program for you! You must complete 3 of the 4 events listed above to qualify as an extreme adult and earn the bragging rights to prove to the youth how extreme you really are! Thursday: Canoe Excursion! Friday: Kayak adventure! Dutch Oven Cook Off On Wednesday we will have a Scoutmaster Desert Dutch Oven Cook Off! We would love to taste some of the excellent Dutch Oven Recipes that you have accumulated in your Troops. The Directors will come around to your campsites on Wednesday to taste who has the best tasting dish for the week. We ask that your desert is ready by 8:00pm so that we can come by and taste the wonderful dishes that you and your Troop have created. We have had cobblers of every shape, size, and level of moist. We have had banana logs. We are looking for presentation, taste, and originality. The winner will receive the Highly Sought Golden Spoon!

20 Wednesday in San Diego Balboa Park (5.4 mi) The nation s largest urban cultural park. Home to 15 major museums, renowned performing arts venues and beautiful gardens. The Park has an ever-changing calendar of museum exhibitions, plays, musicals, concerts, and classes all in the beautiful and timeless setting of this must see an Diego attraction USS Midway (5.5 mi) The USS Midway (aircraft carrier) Museum is an unforgettable adventure for the entire troop. Go to sea without leaving port! Explore more than 60 exhibits with a collection of 25 restored aircraft. Located in downtown San Diego near the San Diego Maritime Museum San Diego Maritime Museum (5.5 mi) The Maritime Museum of San Diego enjoys a worldwide reputation for excellence in restoring, maintaining and operating historic vessels. The museum has one of the world s finest collections of historic ships, including the world s oldest active ship Star of India. Our collection of ships and exhibits are available for daily public tours. Located in downtown San Diego near the USS Midway

21 San Diego Zoo (5.3 mi) Home to more than 4,000 rare and endangered animals representing more than 800 species and subspecies, the San Diego Zoo is a world famous conservation organization where visitors view exotic animals in habitat environments. Zoo guests may view rare giant pandas, cuddly looking koalas, reptiles of various shapes and sizes and many more interesting species La Jolla Shores (5.5 mi) Nestled between the Torrey pine covered cliffs to the north and Mt. Soledad to the South, this beach is a premiere spot for San Diego locals. Parking is limited. Mission Beach (2.1 mi) One of San Diego s most popular beaches. Located next to The Wavehouse and Belmont Park. Free

22 Old Town (2.6 mi) Old Town San Diego State Historic Park presents the opportunity to experience the history of early San Diego by providing a connection to the past. Prices vary by attraction Mormon Battalion Come experience the long march from Iowa to San Diego with the Mormon Battalion. Learn why this group of Latterday Saint men and women joined the U.S. Army and what they accomplished during and after their march. This newly remodeled center evokes Old San Diego and includes hands-on exhibits and resources for learning more about those who served in the Battalion Juan St. San Diego, CA Admission is free

23 Camp Fiesta Island Deep Sea Fishing Wednesday Where: Point Loma Sport Fishing 1403 Scott Street San Diego, CA The Plan: The Scouts and leaders who signed up for this morning event will meet at the Sail Bay at 5:00 AM. We will be leaving Camp Fiesta Island at 5:30 AM. Transportation: Camp Fiesta Island will be providing transportation for the Scouts and their leaders. The Boat: The Daily Double plans to depart as soon as everyone has boarded. The Daily Double has a full galley and will be serving a FREE breakfast Burrito to all scouts and leaders going on this adventure. The Return: The Daily Double will return to Point Loma Sport Fishing around 12:30 PM and we should be returning to Camp Fiesta Island by 1:00 PM, with what we hope is a big bag of fish!! Please remember that one of the requirements for the Fishing Merit Badge is to catch, clean and cook their own fish.

24 Mission Bay Aquatic Center Wednesday Surfing Adventure Join us as we hit the waves of Mission Beach with the help of the Mission Bay Aquatic Center. Each Wednesday there will be a surfing adventure for the scouts or adult leaders to get lessons on the finer points of surfing and a chance to put their skills to the test on the waves of Mission Beach. Adventure Times: 2:00pm- 4:30pm (Must have a filled out Waiver Form to participate in this activity)

26 Wednesday Kayak & Snorkel Tour 2.5-Hour Guided Tour Exploring the Caves in La Jolla Shores This tour is a combination of our Kayak Tour of the 7 Caves and a snorkel adventure. We make snorkeling easy by taking the snorkel gear aboard the kayaks! Get up close and personal with the Garibaldi, Leopard Sharks, Rays, California Sea Lions, and unique local creatures in the Ecological Reserve at La Jolla Shores. Includes all kayaking equipment, snorkel gear, and wetsuits. Tour also includes Leopard Shark Encounter. Each Wednesday Afternoon From 3:30pm / 6:00pm (Transportation and equipment included) (Must have a filled out Waiver Form to participate in this activity)

27 Snorkel Tour - Swim with the Sharks Want to get a little bit closer to the marine life? This Snorkel adventure is designed for those who want to get a little bit closer to the fish. You can find Garibaldi, Sea lions, Leopard Shark and abundance of marine life in the Ecological Reserve area, which is just off shore of the beach. Don t miss this opportunity to swim with the Leopard Sharks in La Jolla! 33 Counselor Training Program A unique opportunity for Scouts and Venturers 14 & 15 years old to: Learn New Leadership Skills, Enjoy Summer Camp, Make New Friends, Have FUN, Earn Merit Badges or Ranger Requirements. Participants will participate in a 3-week specialized program which will involve a half day of work experience with a half day of summer camp experience, all under the guidance of a dedicated Counselor Training Director Registration is limited to 20 participants per session for CFI. All participants will receive 2 t- shirts, a hooded sweatshirt, all meals and full lodging! Participants may only attend one session per summer camp facility. Graduates of an approved National Youth Leadership Training course, who complete the three-week Counselor Training Program, may be eligible to receive a refund of up to 50% of their NYLT course fee. Ask for more details. **Applicants must have Scoutmaster or Crew Advisor recommendation. 34 Day Trekkers Day Camp All sessions of Camp Fiesta Island offer a five-day Day Trekkers DAY CAMP exclusively for younger scouts, or scouts who do not wish to stay overnight. Day Trekkers can enroll in any course suitable for their age group, which may include Scout Skills, Aquatics, and Nature merit badges, as well as our Mariner Program. The Day Trekkers schedule runs concurrent with CFI s weeklong resident camp and is integrated into our daily courses. Please Note The Mariner program is designed to give newest Scouts the opportunity to advance to First Class while completing a variety of requirements from Tenderfoot to First Class. Scouts participating in the Mariner Program will earn the First Aid and Swimming merit badges and two other merit badge class choices. MONDAY Arrival 8 AM Daily Arrival -- 8:30 AM Departure 4:30-5:00 PM Friday: Optional Dinner & Closing Campfire. SPACE LIMITED TO ONLY 32 SCOUTS COST: $250 includes all lunches, daily snack, camp patch, T-shirt, Friday night dinner for Scout and one parent, and dedicated Camp Fiesta Island Supervision staff.
