3 PSRB(s) Approval (Please specify course which PSRB relates to. To include record of meetings held and outcome of consideration. Note official outcome and statement of accreditation). There was no requirement for a validation event to be held with the identified PSRBs, instead accreditation would be sought following approval. At the time of writing this record the validation process for the MSc Construction Project Management (Distance Learning) is still ongoing. PSRBs listed as follows: RICS and CIOB MSc Construction Project Management (Distance Learning); BCS and IET MSc Mobile and Wireless Systems Engineering; Association of Project Managers (APM) MSc Project and Programme Management; IET and IMechE MSc Manufacturing Engineering. (Note: this only applies to courses where PSRB accreditation is required for the course to run. Please state NONE if not applicable). Collaborative Approval (Please specify the named collaborative partner and related course. Outline process for approval e.g. meetings, resource visit and detail the approved mode of delivery and support). NONE (Note: this only applies to courses where collaborative provision has been considered. Please state NONE if not applicable). General comments on the process (such as the nature of student/employer/industry engagement) During the course of the initial planning meeting it was identified that separate PgC s were sought by the development team. It was agreed that work could continue on producing documentation for consideration subject to planning approval being granted as the modules would be part of the full MSc. The approval plans were approved by the DVC, Academic on 11 th July 2013 and the PgCs were therefore signed off by the External Advisers/Validation Team in tandem with the full MSc. The School also identified a further MSc/Pgc for validation (Database Technology). The proposal plan was approved on the 8 th May 2013 and was considered via correspondence with the External Adviser following her appointment in July Due to the volume of proposals considered and the varying degrees of re-submission work that was required by different development leads, it was agreed that Team Lead sign offs would be carried out course by course as they were completed. This enabled the course to be applicant ready without waiting for all courses to be signed off as a whole. A change of title for Transport and Infrastructure to Transport and Infrastructure Management was approved by the DVC Academic on 29/08/13 this was following confirmation of the appropriateness of the title in relation to the content of the course with the External Adviser and Validation team. 2 courses MSc Mobile Learning (Distance Learning) and MSc Construction Project Management (Distance Learning) at the time of writing this are currently still being considered for validation. This is due in the main to the transition to Faculties and relocation of key development staff to other Faculties. These will be considered at a later date and reported under a new Process Record. 5 Record of Initial Planning Meeting (IPM) Date: 8 th April 2013 Present: Dr Kay Biscomb (Chair), Phil Harris (STech), Prof. Robert Newman (STech), Belinda Cross (Officer) Planning Approval Date (to include areas for consideration, where applicable, and whether SQEC or other) 15 th March 2013 SQEC Other University Quality Panel (UQP) Short description of scope of validation / list of courses proposed (e.g. SAD Undergraduate portfolio) MSc Mobile and Wireless Systems Engineering (Full-time and part-time) MSc Transport and Infrastructure (Full-time and part-time) MSc Programme and Project Management (Full-time and part-time) MSc Mobile Learning (Distance Learning) MSc Construction Project Management (Distance Learning) MSc Manufacturing Engineering (Full-time and part-time) Identify exemptions being proposed. (Please specify course which exemption relates to. If none, please state NONE) 1. NONE Collaborative Partner and nature of collaboration proposed e.g. Supported Delivery. (Please specify course which collaboration relates to. If none, please state NONE) NONE relating to UK/Overseas collaborative partners, however it was identified that both UWBS and SEF had been approached internally to contribute to the MSc Project and Programme Management and MSc Mobile Learning (Distance Learning) respectively. Discussions were on-going with UWBS. Professional / Statutory / Regulatory Body (PSRB) and nature of PSRB to include level of involvement e.g. as part of the Developmental team or stand alone event. (Please specify course which PSRB relates to. If none, please state NONE) There was no requirement for a validation event to be held with the identified PSRBs, instead accreditation would be sought following approval. It was noted however, that RICS had identified that they would be willing to provide advice throughout the validation process for the MSc Construction Project Management (Distance Learning) to facilitate accreditation once validation was completed. It was suggested that an external adviser with RICS accreditation/background may be suitable to pursue to ensure that the course was validated with RICS requirements built in. PSRBs listed as follows: RICS and CIOB MSc Construction Project Management (Distance Learning); BCS and IET MSc Mobile and Wireless Systems Engineering; Association of Project Managers (APM) MSc Project and Programme Management; IET and IMechE MSc Manufacturing Engineering. Nature of student engagement (to include a brief outline) None identified in addition to that outlined within the proposal plans. Page 5 of 26

6 Nature of engagement with employers / industry / sector (to include a brief outline) The School advised that they have strong links with industry; the proposals have largely been driven by the involvement of KTPs and industry. It was highlighted that a questionnaire had been sent to employers in relation to the proposed courses, in particular to gauge feedback on the mode of delivery. Feedback was awaited. External Adviser nomination (to include brief outline of experience, institution and number proposed by School) 3 External Advisers would be appointed and grouped as follows: 1 to consider the MSc Project and Programme Management and MSc Construction Project Management (Distance Learning); 1 to consider the MSc Mobile and Wireless Systems Engineering and MSc Mobile Learning (Distance Learning); 1 to consider the MSc Transport and Infrastructure and MSc Manufacturing Engineering Nominations were yet to be confirmed / identified. It was suggested that Mike Bramhall, currently being used as an external adviser for the BEng Manufacturing Engineering validation, may be suitable to approach in order to provide continuity from the UG degree to the progression route. 7 Curriculum Development Documentation Checklist (Please and/or specify details if required) Proposal Plan already received Course Specification Module Specification new modules to be uploaded to e:vision Collaborative agreement (please N/A although the collaboration with SEF and UWBS specify) should be evident CVs (collaborative only) N/A however explicit reference to be made within the CSTs as to research background/strengths of staff delivering the courses PSRB Record Template N/A Other (please specify): Module Guides to be supplied for existing modules Distance Learning Materials materials to be provided for at least one module from each distance learning course Proposed Developmental Timeline April May Draft(s) available for comment 26/04/13 (date) Draft(s) deadline response from team 10/05/13 (date) Meeting with External Advisers Either w/c 20/05 or w/c 28/05 (Note: the months highlighted show the potential developmental timeframe for the team this does not however, imply that drafts will necessarily be submitted each month e.g. a draft submitted in October might not be re-drafted until December. This is at the discretion of the IPM.) Other comments, actions and items to follow up after the initial planning meeting Validation of separate PgCs for all courses Discussion focused on whether the School wanted to validate separate PgC s for all of the courses as per School practice (item raised at the planning stage). It was noted that this was something that the School did want to pursue. It was pointed out that there would need to be an audit trail with planning as to this request. Action: Mrs Cross to establish with the Head of Academic Standards and Quality if a memo outlining the proposal to validate separate PgC s would suffice as an audit trail with planning. Mrs Cross to confirm if a separate course specification was required for the PgC s or whether this could be built into the MSc CSTs in some way. Response: Revised ADPs to be submitted for all separate PgCs, work to continue on PgC s whilst approval sought. Action closed. Separate course specifications to be submitted for all PgCs. Action closed. Page 7 of 26

8 Validation of a conventional MSc Mobile Learning Discussion focussed on the possibility of the MSc Mobile Learning (Distance Learning) being also validated as a conventional course alongside the distance learning, this would provide the School with the opportunity to test the modules/course material prior to the delivery of the distance learning course. It was pointed out that this would need to be confirmed with the Head of ASQ as the planning approval was purely for distance learning. In relation to the distance learning courses it was also noted that the first delivery date of October 2013 may be later than this. Action: Mrs Cross to confirm the planning approval process with the Head of ASQ for a conventional MSc Mobile Learning course. Response: Planning approval would have to be sought to include conventional delivery. It was agreed that this would not be pursued at this time. Action closed. Planning items It was identified that several items had been raised at the planning approval stage by readers that needed to be closed through the validation process. It was agreed that these would be highlighted on the WOLF topic as items requiring a response by the School. Several items had also been raised by the distance learning validation team member that needed consideration/responding to by the School prior to validation, these would also be posted on the blog. Action: Mrs Cross to identify issues raised at the planning approval stage and by the distance learning validation team member on the WOLF topic for consideration / response by the School. Response: Identified and included on the WOLF topic. Action closed. Page 8 of 26

17 Appendix 2: External Adviser approval External Adviser Report Template Name of external adviser Institution of external Process Record Reference Number Named validation Professor Mike Bramhall Sheffield Hallam University MSc Manufacturing Engineering PgC Manufacturing Engineering General Comments The team have corresponded with me and have re-written the module learning outcomes for "Advanced Manufacturing for Automotive and Aerospace Sectors"; "Lean and Agile Manufacturing"; "Manufacturing Processes and Technology". I am now satisfied that the learning outcomes are distinctive from the course learning outcomes and I am happy with the level. They also cover the indicative content reflecting the depth and range of coverage. I am also satisfied that the Educational Aims of both the PgC and the MSc Manufacturing has been made clearer in both Programme Specifications. It is also clear from the descriptions of the Portfolio what elements/ tasks would be contained within them. I am now satisfied that the conditions have been met. For the provision included in the above process record, I can confirm that academic standards are set at the appropriate levels and that the course structure, content and available resources are such that standards can be met. Furthermore the provision has benefitted from external views during the planning and development process. Please use this section to highlight good practice and feedback on the developmental process (This may include engagement with staff and the use of the University s online systems e.g. WOLF and e:vision) As noted earlier this is one in a series of degrees which was proposed by the School. The School adopted a single point of contact for the development of these who had a responsibility to liaise with the individual key proposers. This worked very well from our perspective. The liaison person, therefore, had considerable work and this should be noted. A productive discussion was held earlier in the summer with the panel members and the external advisor and the recommendations have been adopted. There was a longer process to this particular set of courses because of the requirement from those discussions to liaise with UWBS. This has now been undertaken and some changes to the course were made as a result. The external advisor supported the proposed degree and I can confirm that the due process in the bullets above has been followed.
