3 Joint Project VMGD-GNS : Establishment of a modern volcanic monitoring system in Vanuatu to increase resilience to natural hazards MFAT/SSDPF Establish a real-time, remote monitoring capability at the five highest risk volcanoes in Vanuatu Develop volcanic hazards databases for use in assessing future eruptive activity. Improve the existing public outreach and awareness program to communities with monitoring products and services Develop standard operating procedures (SOPs) to deal with crisis response to geological hazards and 24/7 operation Develop programs for monitoring ground movement and chemistry of gases and waters at volcanoes Real time volcano monitoring system for Yasur Volcano, Tanna -Established in July seismograph, 1 Digitizer, 1 Camera, -Data transmission system Radio transmission -Volcano-seismic Data transmitted in real time, photos updated every 15 min in the Geohazards website 3

4 Volcano monitoring products and services -Photos -Daily seismic plots - Near real-time Displayed on Geohazards website Volcano monitoring products and services (cont.) RSAM SSAM -Real-time R l Seismic-Amplitude i Measurement (RSAM) -Seismic Spectral-Amplitude Measurement (SSAM), -Automatically loaded into the Geohazards intranet -Trigger of issuance of volcanic Alert bulletins 4

5 Vanuatu volcano monitoring and the the Melanesian Volcano Network (MVN) The MVN Concept endorsed by the MSG leaders in 2008 Establishing Partnerships and Creating Synergies through Exchange and Sharing of the following: Melanesian PEOPLE experienced in vulcanology and disaster management Monitoring EQUIPMENT deployed on active volcanoes especially at times of crisis EXPERIENCE and EXPERTISE in studying the past history of volcanoes, in the instrumental monitoring of volcanoes, and in eruption forecasting. INFORMATION about volcanoes and how they work and how this information canbestbepassedontovulnerablecommunities IDEAS for better sub-regional coordination of volcanic risk-reduction activities. Vanuatu volcano monitoring and the Melanesian Volcano Network (cont.) MVN progresses 1- Ambrym Crisis: DGMWR-RVO(PNG), April-May 2009 Rabaul Volcano Observatory (PNG) intervention in the Ambrym volcano monitoring with the DGMWR 2. Gaua volcano crisis: VMGD- GNS (NZ), September 2009 July 2010 the Gaua volcano crisis monitoring with support in portable seismograph and volcano data analysis training to Geohazards personnel funded by NZAID under the MVN concept. 3- Real-time volcano monitoring system: Solomon Islands (GMRD) Vanuatu (VMGD), Installation of the SAVO volcano monitoring system by Vanuatu Geohazards, and training in the data analysis and stations maintenance - Participation of the GMRD in the establishment of the first RT volcano Monitoring system in Vanuatu 5

6 Vanuatu Volcano monitoring perspective Complete the estalishment of Real-time monitoring on ambrym, Ambae, Gaua, and Lopevi. Develop and review the existing volcano monitoring products and services issued from the RT volcano monitoring Develop and review standard operating procedures (SOPs) to deal with volcano monitoring, volcanic crisis response and 24/7 observations operations Assist the DMOs in Volcanic Contingency Plans for all volcanoes Continue and expand collaborations with other volcano observatories in the region (PNG, Solomon Islands, Samoa, Tonga) in the establishment and running of RT volcano monitoring systems Thank yu tumas 6
