14 Short professional biography Sverker Lindblad was a student at University of Gothenburg, where he got his BA in 1971 based on studies in pedagogy, sociology and psykology. Lindblad got his PhD in Education (Pedagogik) at Uppsala University in 1976, was appointed Docent in 1980, held a Docentship (e.o. Docent) , acted as Professor in Education and was appointed Professor in Education (the Hammer Chair) in Sverker Lindblad is Professor of Education at University of Gothenburg since 2003 where he also was appointed Head of Research, a position he held Lindblad was the main supervisor for twenty-one doctoral theses and assistant supervisor for four doctoral theses. He has been the leader of several research programmes and during the period he achieved 46 million SEK in funds from international and national research councils. Lindblad is the author of around forty articles presented in scientific journals, nine books and thirty chapters in anthologies and research handbooks. Swedish University Committees and Services At Uppsala University Lindblad served as a member of the University Equity Committee ( ), the University Committee on Multicultural issues ( ), the Steering Group for Development Studies. He also chaired the scientific committee for teacher education as well as different university commissions (e.g. selections for chairs and professorships). At the University of Gothenburg he served as a member of the Research board , as a member of Internationalisation advisory board , as a member of the board of the Centre for research on Europe , as a member of the board for a Safe and Secure City (a cooperation between Chalmers University of Technology, University of Gothenburg and the City of Gothenburg) 2006 and onwards. Lindblad is a member of the board of the Gothenburg Centre for Globalization and Development and onwards. Lindblad is Chair of the University of Gothenburg Ranking Group and is Member of the SUHF (Swedish Association of Universities and Colleges. International research cooperation Sverker Lindblad was the scientific leader and co-ordinator for several research projects founded by different research councils, including a completed nine-country study on Education Governance and Social Inclusion and Exclusion funded under the EU-TSER programme (FP4). Lindblad was also scientific leader and coordinator for a EUfinanced (FP6) seven country research project on Professional Knowledge under Restructuring in Education and Health. He is directing the Swedish team in an international research cooperation the Learner Perspective Study. Lindblad was the coordinator for a Nordic network for Ethnography in Education financed by NoFA and is since 2007 convening a Nordic network for research on Politics in Education. He is since 2009 coordinating a Swedish Network for Research on the Political in Education, supported by the Swedish Research Council. Lindblad was participating in a research team analysing recruitment to Teacher Education on behalf of the Nordic Council of Ministers in Lindblad was a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1999, and has also functioned as a scientific advisor in different contexts for instance ( ) 14
15 in a EU financed project in Latin America. He has initiated different research cooperation activities with e.g. Freie Universität Berlin, Stanford University, University of East Anglia and University of Wisconsin-Madison. In recent years he has given keynote speeches and invited presentations concerning major educational issues in e.g. Moscow, Oslo, Hong Kong, Capetown, Edinburgh, Malaga, Taipei, Turku, Keele, Lille and Lahti. International research organization Lindblad has served as a member of the board of Nordic Educational Research Association (of which he was one of its founders and first secretary ) in several rounds, the last period in and as President of the European Educational Researcher Association ( ). As a president of the EERA Lindblad organised a set of large international conferences the ECER in Lindblad served as Secretary for the Council of Europe Workshop on Educational Technology ( ), as expert for the Swedish Commission concerning the Social Bias in Recruitment to Higher Education ( ), for the Swedish School Commission (1994) and for the Ten-Year National Evaluation of Swedish Education ( ). Swedish coordinator for the international PACT group Professional Actions and Cultures of Teaching ( ). At research organisation meetings Lindblad has organised a number of international symposia, such as Educating a Knowledge Society at ECER in Vienna in 2009, Atlantic Crossings: Comparative Conversations on Professional Cultures of Teaching and Institutional Restructuring as a World Movement at the AERA 2007 meeting in Chicago, and A World Championship in Higher Education at the AERA 2008 meeting in New York. Editorial work and activities in scientific journals Lindblad has participated in the founding of Nordic Studies in Education (Nordisk Pedagogik), Pedagogisk Forskning i Sverige and European Educational Research Journal. 16 Nordisk Pedagogik Pedagogisk Forskning i Sverige Teaching and Teacher Education Lindblad has served as a reviewer in these and other journals such as Journal of Education Policy. He served as a board member (until 2004) and an author for Pedagogiska Magasinet a Swedish Journal distributed to all members in the Teacher Union Lärarförbundet published in copies four times a year. In addition he has been the author of a number of articles on education in Swedish Newspapers and have been interviewed in radio and television, e.g. on education policy and on teacher education reforms. Work at research councils Lindblad was a previous member of the education committee at the Research Council of Sweden and of research Council for Development studies and is now serving the Research Council considering research in the Humanities and Social Sciences. He has served as a reviewer for different national and international research funds, such as The Academy of Finland, The Norwegian Research Council and the Estonian Research Council. He is now reviewing research European Commission and at the European Science Foundation, in the EuroHESC programme on higher education and social change. On behalf of the National Agency for Education Lindblad presented in 1992 an analysis of Research programmes and university departments doing research on education. On behalf of the Swedish Research Council Lindblad researched and analysed international arenas for educational sciences in 2003 which he now is updating. He has also on behalf of the Swedish Research Council analysing publications and citations of Swedish educational research in international scientific journals. On research positions and services Lindblad was a previous member of the Education Science Committee in the Humanities and Social Sciences at the Research Council of Sweden. He was also a member of The Research Council for Development studies connected to the Swedish Development Agency. Lindblad is now a member of the Riksbankens Jubileumsfond (RJ), an independent foundation with the goal of promoting and supporting research in the Humanities and Social Sciences. He is also Research Reviewer at the European Commission. Lindblad has served as a reviewer for different national and international research funds, such as The Academy of Finland, The Norwegian Research Council and the Estonian Research Council and evaluated the Danish University of Education in He is now reviewing research at the European Science Foundation and the European Commission research frameworks. Lindblad is also a member of a Higher education ranking group established by the Association of Swedish Higher Education. During a number of years he had the responsibility for the introductory course in education as a science and was chairing the C-course program in Education in different periods since the 1970s. Lindblad was directing research education courses on Qualitative and Quantitative studies and has been responsible for courses on International and Comparative Education, Curriculum Theory, Micro-ethnographies, on Education and Society etc. Besides that he has made a number of public lectures and coordinated research seminars. Concerning teacher education Lindblad was head of the scientific committee for teacher education in Uppsala and has been working as a seminar leader in teacher education in Gothenburg. Lindblad has worked with issues of Curriculum development and has produced teaching/learning materials.
