1 Instructions on how to install the ICoNExam software (as of 1 st June 2007) The software for the ICoN examinations can be run on any computer equipped with Java Virtual Machine 1.4 or following. The software can be downloaded from the ICoN website and is available in different versions suitable for the different operating sistems. The page is: In order to let the students take their ICoN examinations, it is necessary to: a. Install the software for the ICoN examinations (ICoNExam) b. Copy, on the same computer, the dat. files containing all the examination texts of each student The instructions here below explain how to install the software, where to copy the dat. files and how to run the program. Completion of the examination C. Sending of the examination A. SOFTWARE INSTALLATION 1. Java Virtual Machine installation

2 The correct execution of the examination procedure requires the installation on the computer of the Java Virtual Machine Java Runtime Environment (JRE). If the program is not yet installed, you can download it from the links indicated in the page Advised version: Java Virtual Machine 1.4 (ca 11Mb). If you are not sure that Java is already installed on the computer, you can try to install the software (see point 2). If the software does not open the window to insert username and password, probably Java is not installed on the computer. In this case you have to install Java following the instructions given here below. 2. Installation of the software for the execution of the examination The ICoNExam file can be downloaded from the page: The file has a dimension of about 300Kb. By making a double click on the downloaded file (or anyway by executing the file) you will start the procedure of installation of the program. For example: by executing the normal procedure and using Windows, the program will be installed in the folder

3 C:\Programma\IconExam\ Now the program can be activated as all other programs of the operating system (for example, in Windows there will be a group of ICoN programs to be reached with Start). If the program has been previously installed, you will be asked to overlap the previous version. CAUTION: the ICoNExam program is regularly updated and improved. Before each examination session we recommend to INSTALL THE MOST RECENT VERSION. You can donload it from the ICoN website at the link indicated here below. 3. Insertion of the file containing the examination text Each student is given two.dat files named with the name of the student (for example: exam:namesurname1.dat and exam_namesurname2.dat). The student will have to choose one of the two files. The choosen file will be his/her examination text. The choosen file must be copied in the folder in which the software for the exam has been installed. In case it is in Windows, the file can be copied in the C:\Programmi\IconExam\ folder The non choosen file can only be opened in case the choosen one is damaged. The files containing the examination texts can not be read with programs other than ICoNExam (for example, can not be read with the Word program). All the answers given by the student are recorded into the file containing the examination text. At the end of each test the choosen.dat file will be therefore of different extension. A. EXECUTION OF THE EXAMINATION Once the program has been installed, the examination can be done this way (instructions for Windows): a. Execute the ICoNExam file that you find in the installation folder (for Windows: from Start\Programmi\ICoN\IconExam)

Once you start the program you will see a window in which the student will have to digit his/her USERNAME and PASSWORD previously choosen to access the ICoN website (pay attention to capital letters). You will have to use the PASSWORD ORGANIZZATORE previously given to you by from the ICoN Technical Support. The right procedure will lead you to:

6 c. Now you can load the examination text. By clicking on the link Apri you will open a window that will enable you to select the.dat file previously copied in the installation directory. If you do not see the.dat file, it could be that it has been displayed somewhere else on the hard disk. In this case you can find it by means of the tools made available from the operating system of the computer (for example, with Windows, using Esplora risorse) and put it in the righ position. When opening the file you could find this error message:

7 In this case you have to check that the following has been correctly inserted: 1. The username and the password of the student 2. The password organizzatore. By clicking (above on the left ) on the label Azioni you will open a menu in which you will have to select the option Imposta password. You will have to digit again username and password. CAUTION!: Username and password will have to be digited paying attention to capital and small letters. In case of doubt, students can ask to receive their password at their address by digiting their username here: Now the student can start his examination by clicking on the button Inizia Esame. C: SENDING OF FILES At the end of each examination you will have to print a copy of the answers given by the student. There are two ways for printing: You can push the button with the printer icon inside the program. You will see a print preview from which you can proceed and print. To complete this procedure you will have to enter again the program because it will automatically close once the student has ended his/her examination.

8 You can use the html print preview automatically created when the student has ended his/her examination. These files are recorded in a folder named stampa in the installation folder of the ICoNExam program and will have the name of the student and the name of the examination just taken. These files can be opened with the Internet Explorer browser. The html files used to print the examination texts will have to be sent to the ICoN Technical support (supportotecnico@italicon.it) upon request. If students take their examination in more days, they will have to use ALWAYS THE SAME COPY OF THE FILE CONTAINING THE EXAMINATION TEXTS. At the end of EACH examination you will have to: 1. Close the ICoNExam program (the program will automatically close when the student has ended the examination) 2. Send the.dat file used by the student in attachment to this address: The.dat file will be used by ICoN to mark the examinations. When you send back the file to the ICoN Technical Support you will have to indicate the examinations taken by the student that day and precise of the students has made the exercises, the paper or both of them. CAUTION! Please check that the.dat file you send is actually the one used and modified by the student. During its normal functioning the ICoNExam program automatically creates files as examinationsurnamename_tmp.dat These files will only have to be sent upon request of the ICoN Technical support in case it is necessary to confirm or retrieve examinations contained in the main file. Usually, you will only have to send the.dat file actually used by the student.
