Only now the light is digital as I will try to demonstrate to you now But first, a few words about the City

3 Background Paris, capital of France is the seat of France's national government. Paris covers an area of 106 square kilometers and is divided into 20 administrative districts ( arrondissements ). Paris is also the capital of the Île-de-France Region (the "Paris Region"), which encompasses the city of Paris and its agglomeration.

4 Vital Statistics Population : 2,144,700 Labor force : 1,815,000 Mean household income : 39,960 The fact that the residential density of the city (20,000 residents per km²) is superior to the city s average employment density (15,700 jobs per km²) shows that Paris is at the same time a city where people live and a city where people work. 30% of the population are between 20 and 39 years old and one-third of France s chief executive officers are based in the Paris Region. 55% of Paris population are under 40 years of age and only 19% are over 60.

6 The Parvi Program In 2001, Paris City launched one of its most innovative program, Parvi (Paris Ville Numérique Paris the Digital City). The Parvi program focuses on the deployment of very high-speed networks and wireless technologies on the provision of Internet access for all.

7 Encourage competition on the telecom market By encouraging telecommunications companies to deploy wired and wireless broadband in Paris, the City wants to foster competition to bring down prices. With respect to wired broadband, the City has reviewed different ways of achieving connectivity everywhere The sewer and water distribution systems in Paris provide a dense network of well maintained and easily accessible pathways, making it easier and far less costly to install a fiber network. Using this unique characteristic, the City has decided to lower by 25% the fees for the operators to use the sewer and water distribution systems to install their fiber.

8 The Present of «Paris, the digital city» Network Infrastructure : About 1800 km of fiber optic to provide Very High Speed DSL have already been installed. Internet Access for All : The DSL penetration rate is up to 60%. Thus, 650,000 of Paris households are connected to ADSL. 18 Public Digital Spaces (Espaces Publics Numériques) have been set up to cater to the needs of the less affluents. These public access points welcome more than 120,000 visitors each year. 25,000 moderate rent dwellings (social housing) are connected to high-speed broadband. Employment Growth: Between 2000 and 2004, the number of companies operating in the ICT sector increased by more than 46%. In 2004, the number of ICT companies in Paris amounted to 9,367.

9 Paris : Mobility Now The City of Paris is capitalizing in mobility by : Providing free WiFi access in 400 public spaces and municipal ( buildings (e.g., the city halls, libraries, parks and gardens Deploying specially designed benches and chairs to offer WiFi access with solar energy power supply. Providing free WiFi to the inhabitants, tourists, professionals, and companies in the city s quarter Montorgueil, becoming thus the first city's digital neighborough. Renting at economical fees, city lamps, city lights, roofs of municipal buildings to the new operators of Wimax and Personal MobileTelevision

10 Target : an All Digital City The target : To connect 80% of Paris buildings to high-speed networks by The players : Already 3 private operators have announced their intention to commit themselves to this aim : France Telecom, Free and Neuf Telecom The City helps by : Making available the use of municipal equipment, in particular the sewer and water distribution systems of the City of Paris Reducing the fees for the operators Creating the smart building label for all municipal constructions Inciting operators to share their networks inside the buildings ( concerned especially in social housing ( dwellings Creating of a supervisory body to ensure the further development of high-speed broadband and services in Paris
