Pulls existing wellness committee together monthly to learn history of committee and determine next steps : Continue to meet monthly, Measurable goals set for year to focus efforts. Establish Wellness Newsletter distributed semiannually : Received WCH Grant, $18, Completed SHI across district ; developed three goals to work on for Developed website for district wellness information : Working on three goals established in Performing assessment of efforts. 5 Statewide multi-year effort to encourage and support population-based obesity and tobacco prevention in Illinois communities. Created out of the Community Transformation Grant awarded to IDPH from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Strategies support transformational, sustainable change within a variety of community settings that impact a larger number of people. McLean County Health Department focused on 4 areas: Coordinated School Health (district-wide implementation), Worksite Wellness, Smoke-Free Multi-Unit Housing, and Smoke-Free Public Places.

7 Coordinated School Health The Case for Coordinated School Health Coordinated school health (CSH) is recommended by CDC as a strategy for improving students' health and learning in our nation s schools. Why Schools? The healthy development of children and adolescents is influenced by many societal institutions. After the family, the school is the primary institution responsible for the development of young people in the United States. Why School Health? The health of young people is strongly linked to their academic success, and the academic success of youth is strongly linked with their health. Why Coordinate School Health? Eliminate gaps and reduce redundancies across the many initiatives and funding streams Build partnerships and teamwork among school health and education professionals in the school Build collaboration and enhance communication among public health, school health, and other education and health professionals in the community Focus efforts on helping students engage in protective, health-enhancing behaviors and avoid risk behaviors Source: Center for Disease Control:

8 School Health Index Self-assessment and planning tool that schools can use to improve their health and safety policies and programs. Developed by CDC in partnership with school administrators and staff, school health experts, parents, and national nongovernmental health and education agencies to Enable schools to identify strengths and weaknesses of health and safety policies and programs Enable schools to develop an action plan for improving student health, which can be incorporated into the School Improvement Plan Engage teachers, parents, students, and the community in promoting health-enhancing behaviors and better health The SHI is based on CDC s research-based guidelines for school health programs, which identify the policies and practices most likely to be effective in reducing youth health risk behaviors.
