3 [exhibitions fall/winter 2013/14] small formats.! 17 October March 2014 Opening: 16 October 2013 at 7 p.m. The small format marked the origin of Gugging Art. Originally used in test drawings, the miniature soon took on a life of its own: the ultimate gist. On just 10.5 by 14.8 centimetres (4.1 by 5.8 inches), nothing can be hidden or masked, the artist must consciously show everything. Stroke, colouring, every detail must be precise to create a piece of significance. Around three hundred works by more than twenty artists see the visitor through a realm of humorous small formats a land of smiles, ruled by the Gugging Artists. Catalogue: Feilacher, Johann (editor). small formats.: Residenzverlag, 432 pages, format 105x148 mm, hard cover, EUR The exquisite art book comprises around 300 works by Gugging Artists from the past five decades in original format, accompanied by Gugging Artists texts. It includes the artists August Walla, Oswald Tschirtner, Johann Hauser, Franz Kernbeis, Philipp Schöpke, Franz Kamlander, Johann Binner, Anton Dobay, Johann Garber, Johann Fischer, Günther Schützenhöfer, Ernst Herbeck, Karl Vondal, and many others. The catalogue will be published on 15 October ingolf ebeling sunray millionaire at the Novomatic Salon, Museum Gugging 17 October March 2014 Opening: 16 October 2013 at 7 p.m. The postcard project Der Sonnenstrahlenmillionär (The Sunray Millionaire) by the German artist Ingolf Ebeling (born in 1964) is a fascinating, almost endless work in progress. The Museum Gugging will present it to the public for the first time ever. Following an exact mathematical thought structure, the artist draws sunrays numbering from one to a maximum of 30 on single postcards until the rays amount to exactly 1 million all together. Curating the exhibitions is Johann Feilacher, artistic director at the Museum Gugging. The works on show belong to the Gugging Artists Private Trust s collection, to private lenders or to artists themselves. 4 [exhibitions fall/winter 2013/14] Side by side with small formats.! you can see faces from gugging 21 March March 2014 The exhibition faces from gugging shows works created in Gugging by several artists around the subject of portraits. It features Rudolf Horacek, the master of analytic portraits : he dissects faces and interweaves them with writing, sometimes drowning them out completely. Also on show: works by Oswald Tschirtner, Fritz Koller, Johann Hauser, August Walla, Johann Garber, but also lesser-known artists such as Johann Binner and Anton Dobay. 5 [small formats.!] In the small format there is no resort Johann Feilacher, artistic director and curator at the Museum Gugging, on the exhibition small formats.! The small format was the origin of all creative work in Gugging. Hence it is of historical importance and still significant today because the small format in combination with the simple tool of a pencil best reveals someone s talent and ability to find new formal solutions. No large format is needed to make a creative statement; this can be done very succinctly on a very confined format which has been mostly ignored in the art world of late. Everything was to be large, broad, high-flying and artificial; the exhibition proves this to be unnecessary: a grand, significant work is also possible in small format. It is much harder to focus on the essence than to splotch colours on a large canvas. In the small format there is no resort. The small formats history in Gugging In the mid 1950s, psychiatrist Leo Navratil ( ) was the head of a psychiatric ward for men at the then Gugging Sanatorium and Psychiatric Hospital, where he instructed his patients to draw according to certain rules. In 1949, during a study visit to London, he had come across the draw-a-person-test, a kind of diagnostic drawing test developed by the American clinical psychologist Karen Machover. Navratil applied this method in a somewhat adapted form with the unexpected and striking result that over the years some patients created highly idiosyncratic drawings and writings of a an impressive quality. Machover gave her test persons a sheet the size of a letter paper, a medium-hard pencil, and an eraser. I used thin cardboard the size of a postcard and made sure such cards ( ) were always in supply. I believe the thin carton to be more stimulating than ordinary writing paper, more of a challenge for the patient. But I also valued the small format, considering the stationary size overwhelming for many patients. A thin piece of cardboard the size of a postcard seemed to hold the balance between intricate and unassuming. ( ) from: Navratil, Leo. Art Brut und Psychatrie. Gugging Vienna, Brandstätter, Over time, the small format, originally used for diagnostic purposes, developed a life of its own. Bearing testimony to its great potential is, among other things, the exhibition small formats.! 6 [small formats.!] Gugging Artists and their use of the small format (selection) August Walla ( ) Excerpts from a conversation with Johann Feilacher: It is well known that August Walla painted large canvases, streets and house walls; but throughout all periods of his work, he reverted to the small format also. In principle, the Gugging Artists have all formats at their disposal. August Walla would take a batch of small formatted sheets to produce a few drawings before breakfast. He demanded a down payment from the Gallery for every picture taken in commission. Upon sale of the piece, the balance was transferred into Walla s bank account. But Walla was very distrustful of banks, and therefore insisted on cash deposits. Thus in Walla s case one might speak of the small format as his individual, artistically personalised currency. The pieces from Walla s last period not only the small formats are highly concrete. He chose everyday objects from a beer glass to a coat of arms devoid of any visibly metaphorical background. His surroundings, e.g. a restaurant, became the theme of his pictures; he drew what he saw, and not what he thought or imagined. After his mother s death, Walla had changed in style as much as in content. Following a creative crisis of almost two years, he slowly re-composed himself; in fact, he became the one and only August Walla only during that phase: before, his mother had always been a part of his self. Without her, he was incapable of interacting with his environment, and was forced to relearn how to communicate and be in the world. As a result of this self-discovery process, he relinquished all big ideological explanations of the world. He began to say and artistically express what he wanted and what was part of his life. Thus Walla s small formats can be seen as formally impressive, often almost ironic footnotes to his everyday life. Fritz Koller ( ) Fritz Koller s strokes were swift, often dissecting figures, objects and buildings into their components and arranging them on mostly small-formatted sheets of paper. He often drew people in mixed profile; webs of lines cover his sheets to the point of total abstraction. He completed his works within a few seconds energetic, masterful and of inimitable mirth. 7 [small formats.!] Oswald Tschirtner ( ) Oswald Tschirtner was born in Perchtholdsdorf, Lower Austria; having completed secondary school, he began to study chemistry. He served in WWII and was captured as a POW; he was first admitted to the Gugging Mental Hospital in He lived and worked at the Gugging House of Artists from 1981 until his death in Oswald Tschirtner s minimalist art mimicked his life, which he lived withdrawn, conferring only with his bible. His cephalopods are devoid of all décor; no attire or gender can be made out in those depictions of humans. With other subjects, Tschirtner s style becomes even more reduced: a single line may denote a landscape, or an animal cross the sheet as a mere dot. Oswald Tschirtner s stupendous work in small format inspired this exhibition. O.T. manages maximal concentration on A5 sheets or even smaller. In his advanced age, no longer capable of working on large canvases, he returned to the small formats of his early years. He mastered this despite serious age-related constraints, also through the new medium of minimal, subtle use of colour. Karoline Rosskopf ( unknown) Karoline Rosskopf s drawings followed the tradition of test drawings at first, but soon took on a life of their own. Drawing became part of her daily routine. There are only small formatted drawings left from this all but unknown Gugging Artist. Their formalism and geometric body images make them highly interesting and unmistakably humoristic. New Gugging Artists in small formats.! For the first time on show are Helmut Hladisch and Jürgen Tauscher, two new residents at the House of Artists, who work at the Open Studio. Helmut Hladisch (*1961) Helmut Hladisch grew up in Vienna, attended a special needs school and completed an apprenticeship for retail dealers in A year later he began to hear voices, which influenced him to the point of being unable to practise his profession. After the death of his parents and sister, who had been looking after him, he was admitted to the Vienna General Hospital AKH and hence referred to the Gugging House of Artists, where he showed an artistic talent he had been unaware of. In a short time, Helmut Hladisch developed an impressive personal shape language; these first drawings in small format expose his graphic talent so clearly that it seemed justified to include his works in the exhibition small formats.! His stroke is precise, clear and simple, his shapes reveal a highly idiosyncratic space solution, letting even simple pencil drawings result in exciting structures. Bildnachweis: Karoline Rosskopf, Ohne Titel, 1966 Privatstiftung Künstler aus Gugging; August Walla, Sauere Wurst, 1999 Art Brut KG 7

8 [small formats.!] Jürgen Tauscher (*1974) Jürgen Tauscher was born in St. Pölten, where his learning difficulty prevented him from attending school. When his grandparents, who he lived with for many years, were no longer able to care for him, he briefly stayed at the Mauer Psychiatric Clinic before being admitted to the Klosterneuburg Martinsheim. After several visits to the Open Studio, his drawing skills became apparent, and he now lives at the Gugging House of Artists. Jürgen Tauscher loves anything that can fly; hence his main themes are space capsules, aeroplanes and helicopters. He draws them with a rather nervous, often scribbling stroke, yet concentrated on the mostly small-formatted sheet. Less often, he fills out his objects surface all together but never obliterates his drawing s original details. Gugging Studio The Gugging Studio is for the use of the Gugging Artists, residing nearby in the Gugging House of Artists; furthermore, anyone wishing to try themselves out artistically in a creative atmosphere can make use of this institution s open structure. The Studio is one of the Art Brut Center Gugging s many modules, and functions exclusively as a workspace; it does not offer any forum for exhibitions or sales. Managing the Studio is the non-profit organisation Friends of the Gugging House of Artists Society. 9 [ingolf ebeling] [inhalt] ingolf ebeling Sun Ray Millionaire at the Museum Gugging s Novomatic Salon 17 October March 2014 Opening: 16 October 2013 at 7 p.m. Postcard project The Sun Ray Millionaire (original text contribution by the artist Ingolf Ebeling) Approach: I draw a four-sided sun on each post card. Beginning at the top left edge, I distribute the sun s rays along the four edges in a clockwise direction; the rays are numbered consecutively from ray #1 to ray #1,000,000 and beginning with postcard #1. Each sun has a minimum of one ray and a maximum of 30 rays; each sun is unique in the combination of its rays and only appears on one postcard. Following a mathematical formula, I work out all possible distributions of the 1 to 30 rays onto the sun s four edges. I draw the different ray combinations on the postcards until all the rays add up to exactly 1,000,000. This will require almost all possible ray combinations from one to thirty rays. There will be more than 42,000 postcards all together; then the project will be completed. The total processing time will be at least 10 years at 20 working hours per week (and around six weeks holidays per year). Material: =A6 postcards of high quality artist s paper (300g)= pencil=colour pencils (light grey and two different shades of yellow)=postal stamps (international) Design elements: =four-sided sun=words of affection=date=hour of day=signature initials=address field=postage stamp=postmark=ray numbers=card number Interpretation attempt: The sun shines new every day; every day in life is new and unique; love is new and unique every day. My beloved sun girl accompanies me through time and over the years through life with her love and affection and basically gives me strength to survive, to lead an ordered and honourable life. The sun cards demonstrate that life is worth living and that love basically makes life possible. The cards are my contribution to conquer life; they are necessary for me to secure life in the face of destructive forces. During the creative period, my daily routine is constantly interspersed with small rivulets of love, with soft rays of light warming my heart. My cards are a way of thanking my beloved, whose honest affection and genuine love have profoundly re-defined life for me. Without her, I would be no longer. 10 [ingolf ebeling] [inhalt] Note: The postcards addressee, Sina, by now a student at the Lower Saxony Police Academy, has never met Ingolf Ebeling in person; yet for the last 10 years, he and his Face of his Life have been in regular correspondence. Biography: In 1964 Ingolf Ebeling was born the oldest son of a good middle-class civil servant s family in Bremen; he currently lives in Hanover. In the late 1980s a chronic schizophrenic psychosis made it impossible for him to continue his medical studies or his later commenced biology and chemistry teacher training. In 1991 he began to paint as an autodidact, illustrating a children s story he had written himself. After his first visit to the Open Studio Gugging, founded in 2001, Johann Feilacher invited Ingolf Ebeling to the Studio. Ingolf Ebeling has been a regular visitor to the Studio since 2002; here he continues his work in progress, the postcard project The Sun Ray Millionaire. Ingolf Ebeling devotes himself to Christian sermons and the Bible in a successful attempt to contain his illness. Bildnachweis: Ingolf Ebeling, Projekt Sonnenstrahlenmillionär, /2 Ingolf Ebeling 10

13 [Art Brut & Gugging] [inhalt] Art Brut & Gugging The term Art Brut was coined by the French artist Jean Dubuffet, who used it to describe a genuine art displaying evidence of a highly personal and non-adjusted shape language. Art Brut is often created spontaneously and without reflection, outside the framework of academic or art-theoretic education. The Art Brut Center Gugging had dedicated itself to this understanding. Since the early 80s it has been a centre of multitude and variety, comprising different institutions under one roof. First of all there is the House of Artists. That building, painted in all the colours of the rainbow, is the origin of the multi-facetted events occurring on the premises these days. Since 1981 it has housed people whose pictures and objects have gained them a worldwide reputation as the Gugging Artists. The House is coined by its residents who have decorated it entirely in accordance with their wishes. Their inexhaustible productivity allows them to produce new works almost every day. In October 2009 the eagerly awaited gentle extension works began, a clever architectural solution making sure that the murals by Tschirtner and Walla on the south-facing façade could be conserved and remain visible. The existing, rather obsolete artists quarters were brought up to a present-day standard and the residents offered a better quality of living. Already in 1994 a gallery had been founded to house the work of the Gugging Artists. At the time, it was located in two small rooms inside the House of Artists, i.e. directly at the origin. In 1997 the gallery was moved, adapting the exhibition rooms inside today s Art / Brut Center Gugging, only 165 yards from the House of Artists. Since 2005 the gallery has been located on the renovated ground floor of the Art/ Brut Center Gugging. The galerie gugging exhibits and sells works by international Art Brut artists next to current paintings, drawings, prints and objects by Gugging Artists. Thus the visitors can receive a comprehensive insight into the world of Art Brut in addition to the exhibitions held at the museum gugging. Till November 3rd, 2013 the gallery shows the french Art Brut Artist Michel Nedjar and from November 6, 2013 the exhibition global art brut 1 is dedicated to the international Art Brut Scene. 14 [Art Brut & Gugging] [inhalt] The public studio, in existence since the year 2000 and also located on the gallery floor since two years ago, invites anybody who is interested to try themselves out. This is a way to kindle and discover new talents. The offer is primarily aimed at people who live in assisted accommodations. There is no need to meet any demands or parameters. The studio s main goal is to support individual and creative potential. The museum gugging opened in It is located on the upper floor of the main building. On display are works by Gugging Artists like Oswald Tschirtner, Franz Gableck, August Walla and many others. The museum gugging aims to establish ties with contemporary art and open up a dialogue with those whose work is either influenced by Art Brut or otherwise linked to it. The rich work of the Gugging Artists, constantly growing in size, and the large number of pictures from the Gugging Artists Private Foundation allow us to exchange and extend the exhibition of art works from Gugging. Also worth exploring is the shop gugging. Charmingly decorated, it invites you to discover a plethora of selected beautiful items: the attractive offer ranges from specialized literature, post cards and posters of the works exhibited in the museum and gallery to textiles by young Austrian designers. The Villa is idyllically located on a small hill a stone-throw away from the main building. It offers space for symposia and events of all kinds from readings, dance and theatre to concerts. The Villa is used for Art Brut Center functions, but it can also be rented. Bildnachweis: Innenansichten des museum gugging, Museumsshop, die Villa museum gugging 14
