2 B. Breakdown of Stem Cell Research, by Cell Type Research supply companies preparing to launch a stem product line or expand an existing one are likely considering several stem cell types for use in product development. As such, it makes sense to consider the degree to which a specific stem cell type contributes to total global stem cell research activity. On the one hand, it makes sense to launch products for which there is significant current research demand, but on the other hand, it also makes sense to consider the importance of entering a stem cell product area earlier than the competition for purposes of product positioning, establishing market share dominance, and building brand loyalty. Thus, this section considers the degree to which specific stem cell types contribute to total global stem cell research activity. The figures below are based on trailing twelve month (TTM) data, for January 1, 2013 to Dec 31, 2013, generated using rate data from the PubMed database, the largest and most comprehensive global meta-database available for scientific publications. 1 Note that stimulus-triggered acquisition of pluripotency (STAP) cells have not been included in this analysis, because their validity has yet to be confirmed. The stem cell types included in analysis were: Embryonic Stem Cells (ESCs) Fetal Stem Cells Cord Blood Stem Cells Dental Stem Cells Hematopoietic Stem Cells (HSCs) Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) Neural Stem & Progenitor Cells (NSCs) Cancer Stem Cells Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells (ipscs) Other ( Novel ) Stem Cell Types Neural Rosette Cells (R-NSCs) Very Small Embryonic Like (VSEL) Stem Cells 1 Publication Rate Data, Date Range: Jan 1, 2013 Dec 31, 213. Source: Pubmed Database ( Data collected February 1, 2014.
3 TABLE: Percent of Stem Cell Research, By Cell Type (Determined Using Trailing 12-Month Scientific Publication Rate Data) Stem Cell Type % of Stem Cell Research # of TTM Publications (Jan 1, Dec 31, 2013) Mesenchymal Stem Cells 24.8% 3,877 Hematopoietic Stem Cells 24.1% 3,763 Embryonic Stem Cells 15.8% 2,459 Cancer Stem Cells 10.1% 1584 Neural Stem & Progenitor Cells 9.9% 1537 Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells 8.9% 1387 Cord Blood Stem Cells 5.2% 818 Dental Stem Cells 0.2% 27 Fetal Stem Cells 0.3% 43 Search Terms "Mesenchymal Stem Cells" OR "Mesenchymal Stem Cell" "Hematopoietic Stem Cells" OR "Hematopoietic Stem Cell" "Embryonic Stem Cells" OR "Embryonic Stem Cell" "Cancer Stem Cells" OR "Cancer Stem Cell" "Neural Stem Cells" OR "Neural Stem Cell" "Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells" OR "Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell" "Cord Blood Stem Cells" OR "Cord Blood Stem Cell" OR "Umbilical Stem Cell" "Dental Stem Cells" OR "Dental Stem Cell" "Fetal Stem Cells" OR "Fetal Stem Cell" Other Stem Cells 0.7% 116 (See Sub-Categories Below) - Neural Rosette Cells 0.1% 18 - Very Small Embryonic Like (VSEL) Stem Cells 0.6% 98 TOTAL 100.0% 11,734 "Neural Rosette Cells" OR "Neural Rosette Cell" "Very Small Embryonic Like Stem Cells" OR "Very Small Embryonic Like (VSEL) Stem Cell"
4 Percent of Stem Cell Research, by Cell Type (Determined Using Trailing 12-Month Scientific Publication Rate Data) 8.9% 10.1% 0.2% 0.3% 5.2% 0.7% 24.1% Hematopoietic Stem Cells Mesenchymal Stem Cells Embryonic Stem Cells Neural Stem & Progenitor Cells Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells 9.8% Cancer Stem Cells Cord Blood Stem Cells 15.8% 24.8% Dental Stem Cells Fetal Stem Cells Other Stem Cells As seen above, mesenchymal stem cell research (24.8%) and hematopoietic stem cell research (24.1%) 2 together accounted for nearly half (48.9%) of all stem cell research over a trailing twelve-month period. Interestingly, when this analysis was last conducted using data from full-year 2012 (Jan 1, 2012 Dec 31, 2012), hematopoietic stem cell research led mesenchymal stem cell research, but that relationship has since switched, revealing an interesting preference toward mesenchymal stem cell research among the scientific community. While human embryonic stem cell research remains ethically controversial, embryonic stem cell research with other species (especially mouse and rat) was prevalent, causing embryonic stem cell research to be the third most common type of stem cell research (15.8%). Also of interest is that for the trailing-twelve months, induced pluripotent stem cell research activity represented 8.9% of global stem cell research activity. When this analysis was last conducted using full-year 2012 data (Jan 1, 2012 Dec 31, 2012), induced pluripotent stem cell research activity represented only 4.0% of global research activity, which means that a substantial year-over-year shift has occurred. 2 It is also not surprising that hematopoietic stem cell research was a common type of stem cell research, as hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is the only widely practiced form of stem cell therapy worldwide.
