3 Event Management Certificate Program Introduction: The Event Management Certificate Program is the founding member of the International Consortium of Event Management Programs. This standardized curriculum is offered throughout the world and is the first comprehensive program in higher education providing classroom and distance learning courses leading to industry certification in special events. The program is designed to meet your needs, whether you enroll for one course or earn your Professional Certificate in Event Management. Courses in the Event Management Program are taught by the George Washington University School of Business Jordan Local Instructors. Instructors include specialists in event management, owners of event management firms, and experts in event marketing and sponsorship. Best Practices in Event Management This course addresses major trends and successful business practices in Event Management to provide the knowledge and tools to improve your effectiveness and profitability as an event manager. Learn how to: Structure and manage an event planning schedule to improve profitability Conduct comprehensive needs assessments and feasibility studies Identify and prioritize event goals and objectives you will also: Identify all potential challenges to a successful event and choose appropriate solutions by using efficient planning scenarios Conduct mid- and post-event evaluations Create and present proposals and agreements that are advantageous to all parties of an event Appreciate the rewards of being in the Event Management profession 2. Event Coordination This course covers the nuts and bolts of successfully coordinating a professional event. Learn how to: Develop creative elements including decor and entertainment and properly sequence them at events Develop and implement a site plan and conduct a thorough site inspection Understand the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), permit requirements and labor union issues and their impact on event coordination Analyze and implement professional registration, admission procedures, security, and protocol. 3. Event Marketing This course examines how to use events to promote products, services and causes, and how to promote events themselves. Learn how to: Identify and develop a promotional strategy, including the event proposal, invitations, advertising, publicity, contests, promotional merchandise, sales promotions, packaging, and even personal appearances Distinguish the relative strengths of print, electronic, and other advertising mediums Analyze, establish, and implement a public relations strategy using video and audio news releases, as well as many other new tools Incorporate electronic media Formulate an effective event sponsorship program Conduct market research prior to the event Create a comprehensive marketing/sales measurement methodology 3
5 4. Event Sponsorship This course provides you with a comprehensive plan for identifying, evaluating, soliciting, selling, managing, and coordinating long-term sponsorship deals. It provides case studies, practical skills, and tools to succeed in this lucrative area. Learn how to: Conduct a comprehensive sponsorship needs-assessment and feasibility study Craft a complete strategic plan Identify qualified prospective sponsors Create attractive sponsorship proposals Develop an effective and realistic financial plan for increasing sponsorship revenue Comply with laws governing sponsorship solicitation Develop an easy system for monitoring and improving event sponsorship services Create event sponsorship (including multi-year) agreements 5. Meetings and Conferences Virtually every organization, from trade associations to government agencies, regularly holds large and small meetings. This course provides the basic tools to successfully plan and manage local, national and international meetings and conferences. Course information covers the basic competencies tested in the ISES Certified Special Events Professional (CSEP) and Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) examinations. 6 6. Exposition/Trade Show This course helps you understand the growing role of expositions and trade shows in the marketing and sales process, both in the United States and internationally. It provides practical information for designing and managing projects from a trade show exhibit to planning and coordinating an entire exposition. Learn how to: Use research to target the exhibit or exposition to primary and secondary markets Identify resources, including designers and general service contractors Negotiate successful vendor contracts Develop a thorough and comprehensive marketing strategy and measure results Incorporate promotional activities that enhance marketing efforts Prepare sales and exhibitor communications Use commercial sponsorship to decrease operating expenses 7. Risk Management: Legal and Ethical Safeguards Risk Management: Legal and Ethical Safeguards. This course thoroughly and systematically analyzes potential threats to your events. As the final core course, this practical approach to risk management ensures that you understand and use every possible safeguard to produce safe and successful events. Learn how to: Create a budget for your event using accounting principles Develop a forecasting method to identify future income and expense and improve receivable collection Use financial software to improve efficiency and save time Understand the key components of event contracts Comply with health, safety, and security regulations Conduct a thorough risk assessment for every event Identify basic first aid techniques, including CPR and the Heimlich maneuver (this course does not replace or provide certification in CPR) Understand and comply with copyright, trademark, and service mark protection requirements 5

8 Instructors: Amjad Sawalha: With over 11 years of professional experience in professional event management, Amjad has gained both practical and educational experience to acquire the status of a certified trainer for George Washington University, U.S.A to deliver their Professional Events Management Certificate Program in Jordan. In addition, Amjad also holds two certificates in Professional Event Management and Destination Management & Marketing also from G.W University, U.S.A and currently holds the position of Training and Events Manager at USAID/Jordan Tourism Development Project II. Emad Deeb is the Founder and Managing Director of Pro4 Total Event Solutions, a pioneering enterprise in Jordan in the events management field. As a practitioner, Emad has more than 12 years of experience in event management and production for all types of events locally and regionally. Emad is a certified trainer for the Event Management Program from George Washington University, U.S.A. Sameera Qadoura is a Training and Communications Specialist with more than 18 years of experience in project management, training design and delivery, events planning and organization, small business development, and gender and development, and she is a certified trainer for the Event Management Program from George Washington University, U.S.A. She currently runs a private firm (ICMD- Aim for Results) for Management and Development, and directs the strategic communications and outreach component in support of USAID Jordan Economic Development Program (SABEQ). Her responsibilities for SABEQ include personnel recruitment, training and events, budget development, outreach activities, public relations campaigns and communications strategies. Samar Shawareb Ashqar holds a Masters degree in Business Administration and is a Certified Event Management Professional from George Washington University. She has worked for several years at the British Embassy in Amman promoting and developing trade and investment relations with the United Kingdom as Deputy Commercial Attaché. Samar now runs her own company, Events UnLimited, producing and managing various events including conferences, trade shows and exhibitions. 7
9 Certificate Requirements and Program Policies 1. Complete four core courses and three electives. 2. Complete a minimum of 100 hours of practicum experience. 3. Submit a "professional" portfolio to demonstrate your ability to manage an event or to analyze and synergize what you have learned in the program. 4. Upon successful completion of entire Program (7 classes), portfolio, and practicum hours, a student receives a Certificate in Professional Event Management from The George Washington University School of Business. 5. All courses include a brief mastery quiz to assist students with evaluating their level of performance at the conclusion of the course. 6. All in-class courses include a student workbook. 7. After each course the students will receive a certificate of attendance. Portfolio: What is a portfolio? A portfolio is the documentation of an actual event in which you have participated. You have to be familiar with a significant portion of the research, design, planning, coordination and evaluation processes for this event (including administration, marketing, legal, ethical, and risk management issues). Sections 2-9 may not exceed five doublespaced 8 1/2" by 11" pages per section. Total pages for sections 2-9 combined may not exceed 40 pages. Photographs, illustrations, floor plans, slides, video tape would be in addition to this number and must be included in Section 10: Appendix. The Appendix may not exceed 25 pages. The total portfolio, excluding the Table of Contents, Portfolio Affirmation and Release Form may not exceed 65 pages. Each page should be in a clear plastic sleeve. Portfolio grading is based on a possible total of 150 points. Student must earn 70% (or 105 points) to pass. Students who score less than 70% will have an opportunity to resubmit their portfolio with corrections. Portfolio candidates will lose one point for each page over the page limit indicated above. 10 Practicum Hours: The Practicum Summary Sheet and Practicum forms for each Practicum activity must be the first forms inside the portfolio. If the Practicum Summary Sheet is not included or the total number of Practicum hours indicated are less than the total number required for graduation (currently, 100), the entire portfolio will be returned to the student for resubmission. P.S. practicum hours forms are available upon request. Submission Date(s): Portfolios may be submitted at any time 1 *. However, to be eligible for the July graduation, portfolios must be submitted no later than May 31. To be eligible for the February graduation, portfolios must be submitted no later than December 31.
