2 TAX AGENT CALLER Have you had a suspicious phone call or someone claiming to be from Inland Revenue at your door lately? There has been an increase in scams operating both by phone and door-to-door knocking in the recent months and Inland Revenue would like to warn customers to beware of tax agents who claim to be working on its behalf to ensure people receive their refund. Tax refund season is a very busy time of year and we want to make sure our customer s information is safe and avoid being scammed. Remember these simple things * Inland Revenue will never telephone, or knock on your door regarding your tax refund * We will never ask for your credit card details or monetary payment in order to receive your refund * We will never direct you to any other website other than We ask all our customers to keep their IRD numbers, tax information, online passwords and all other data safe at all times. Please report these scams to us by sending an to It is very easy for customer to manage their tax returns themselves. Simply, log into myir and request a personal tax summary. Once you have been sent this summary, you will be able to confirm the amount online and the refund will be automatically refunded into your bank account. For more information about tax refunds please visit Crime Prevention Advice, July 2014 Constable Rob Stanton, Ethnic Liaison Officer, Auckland City District There has recently been a lot of media coverage and public interest regarding scams and fraud. Much of this criminal activity is taking place with the help of modern technology; however there are still some old fashioned phone, postal and "door to door" scams taking place. Scams are much like viruses. Just when we think we have shut one down, another will appear in a slightly different format. As they are often originating from outside New Zealand prosecutions can be very difficult. We must therefore focus our attention on preventing people from becoming victims in the first place. It would take too long to describe all the scams and, as they are forever evolving, we would never cover all the possibilities. It is more practical to provide you with a few hints that might help you to spot a scam before you become a victim. * Be wary when someone approaches you with an offer, deal or proposition. An example of this may be a door to door salesman who is offering an exceptionally good deal, especially if they ask for some payment in advance. All unexpected mail, and phone calls should be treated with the same caution. Especially be aware of any that offer prizes, money or deals that sound too good to be true. * Always be careful when providing your bank account information. While we are increasingly banking and carrying out transactions on-line, it's important to only provide bank details to people and companies we know and trust. * Finally, if you have been scammed or believe you are being scammed please contact Police. Do not continuing sending money in the hope that you may still get something back. Scams can happen to anyone so do not feel embarrassed about coming forward. For more information regarding online safety go to or check out or go to m-types

It is an addition to the annual Zakat also called as Sadaqa-al-fitr. Its prominence is such that it is the hallmark of Eid and aptly named as Eid-ul-fitr. It amounts to the value equivalent to feed a person for one day. Ibn Umar said: The Prophet PBUH enjoined the payment of one Sa a of dates or one Sa a of barley as Zakat-al-fitr on every Muslim, young and old, male and female, free and slave. (Bukhari and Muslim). 8 June 28, 2014 / 29 Sha ban 1435H Bismillahirahmanirrahim To the Muslim Community in New Zealand, and supporters and friends of Fatimah Foundation, With Ramadan upon us, we are humbled that we have been given this test from Allah to be able to cleanse ourselves, our properties, our wealth, and our excessive materials. Today, June 28 th, 2014 / 29 Sha ban 1435H, our premise at 7 Piki Thompson Way, Otahuhu, Auckland, was broken into, vandalized and ransacked. We share these premises with the Otahuhu Maori Wardens, who also had their offices invaded. This morning one of the community members, who we have supported since 2010, noticed that our premise had been broken into, and contacted the police. The front door, the face of Fatimah Foundation Family Centre was broken into pieces. The offenders used the recycling wheely bins to break into the property. The back office door was kicked, and completely removed from its hinges. Our office equipment was stolen and furniture in the family center were also severely damaged. The police found that our food had been eaten and food parcels taken, and vandals were treating themselves at our centre. The following is a list of stolen and damaged property. Damages on our office equipment: 1 printer stolen, 2 printers damaged, they were thrown outside our Family Centre, 2 CPUs stolen, 2 monitors stolen, 3 phones stolen, 3 laptops stolen, and storage cabinets damaged. Damages to our Family Centre equipment: 1 television was stolen, 1 television was kicked and toppled over Audio equipment stolen, Fridges and freezes were vandalized and damaged, Children s toys damaged, and Items and (donated) clothes in our cabinets thrown all over the floor. We had purchased our office equipment from a recently secured funding to help with our operations. We use this equipment to communicate with our families and liaise with NZ Police, Child Youth and Family, and other support organisations. Unfortunately, our premise, including any office equipment was not insured, simply because we were unable to afford this expense. Alhamdulillah no staff, volunteers and community members were hurt in the incident. All documentations remain on site and are secure. Our staffs are immensely devastated and 1
9 distressed about the invasion. The police were very supportive and offered Victim Support. However we have declined this, as we will use our internal resources. As you know, we are a charitable organization that provides support services to the community, in particular to Muslim women and children. This devastating incident will have a significant negative impact to the delivery of our services especially to those who most need it. Although Ramadhan is upon us, those families that are currently in our service will still require continued support. The loss of our equipment makes it extremely difficult for us to function and communicate with the families and external agencies to effectively continue our services. We will be grateful for any financial donations and practical assistance from our community in any way possible. We especially need cash donations to replace the stolen and vandalised equipment, so that we can continue our operations and support Muslim families and our community. Fatimah Foundation is a charitable organization that relies heavily on donations from the Muslim public. We trust that the timing of this disturbing incident will open the hearts of our Muslim community and we humbly request that you consider Fatimah Foundation when giving Zakaat, and making Sadaqah and donations. Our details are as follows: Kiwibank Bank Accounts Account Name: Fatimah Foundation (Principal) (Food bank) (Zakaat) Swift code: CITINZ2X We are also on Telecom Foundation s Give a Little site at For the impact photos of the incident, please visit our Facebook page ( Insya Allah, we will still maintain our normal business hours Tuesday to Friday from 10am to 3pm, and Saturday from 1 to 3pm. For appointments outside these hours, please contact our office at If you have any queries, please contact Noeleen van de Lisdonk at or Zaidah Mustaffa at Yours Sincerely, Noeleen van de Lisdonk Service and Operations Manager, Fatimah Foundation 2
10 On this occasion of the Holy Month of Ramadhan, I am most pleased to extend my Heartiest Ramadhan Mubarak to the New Zealand Muslim community. May Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala accept our fastings and bless us all. May He also keep us united and on the right path. Dr Anwarul Ghani, President of FIANZ
