1 Manhattan College Policy on Internships MBAE 601 MBA Program Information and Instructions for Students and Sponsoring Faculty Aligned closely with the mission of Manhattan College, the mission of the Internship Program is to provide learning opportunities beyond the traditional classroom that engage students in applying theory and knowledge gained in the classroom to practical application in a business or professional setting. In this setting, students will advance their own professional and personal development, which includes the acquisition of key academic and life skills such as critical thinking and problem-solving, communication, collaboration, goal setting, and self-appraisal. Learning Goals At the completion of the internship, students will be able to: 1. Relate knowledge learned in the classroom to the work of the business or organization. 2. Acquire new knowledge related to the student s course of study and field work. 3. Reflect on new learning through articulation of critical or creative thinking and problem solving during the internship. 4. Give examples of productive interactions and collaboration with colleagues at the site of the internship; include examples of dealing with people or negotiating experience if any occurred and what was learned. 5. Describe experiences which advanced the student s cultural awareness or appreciation of cultural and human differences. 6. Analyze new learning from setting goals and achieving goals for the internship, managing career development, acquiring technical and life skills, and living a purposeful life. Assessment of Learning (Rubrics attached): Study paper in which student analyzes a current topic(s) relating to his/her discipline and the industry/field experience. Student will receive guidelines for this paper from the faculty member evaluating the learning experience. (Addresses Goals 1 and 2) Reflective writing via periodic journal reports and the personal assessment. (Addresses Goals 3-6). Will be assessed by the faculty member evaluating the learning experience. Requirements and Guidelines Students must be admitted in the MBA program and have completed their fourth (senior) year of study. Students must confer with the director of the MBA program on the application of credit towards the experiential MBA requirement. Students must present a clear job description provided by the employer and outlining expectations and responsibilities. The internship must entail at least 150 hours of work.

2 Students must complete the Application for MBAE 601 Internship (attached below) and submit to the MBA director and internship coordinator. The application will include: o A clear job description provided by the employer and outlining expectations and responsibilities. o An academic contract. The application must be approved (signed) by the faculty sponsor, onsite supervisor, director of the MBA program, and internship coordinator. Students may register for MBAE 601 only once. In the semester that a student elects to pursue an internship, the student will not be allowed to take more than 12 credits total (including internship) except in the most compelling of circumstances, and only with the Dean s approval. Students must complete the required journal, paper, and meetings with faculty sponsor. At the conclusion of the internship, students must confer with their onsite supervisor on the students learning and performance and ensure that supervisors complete evaluations of the students performance and submit it to faculty advisors. Students must complete self-assessment of learning and submit to the faculty advisor. Check List Prior Complete application. (attached) Include job description. Complete academic contract. (attached) Obtain signatures Register for course. During Complete 150 hours onsite at the workplace of the employer. Confer with your faculty sponsor on your progress/learning via or in a face-to-face meeting at least three times during the internship. A week before the end of the term, set a meeting date with your faculty sponsor to discuss your paper and self assessment assignments. Set a date to meet with your onsite supervisor to confer on your learning and performance; ensure that the supervisor has completed an evaluation and has submitted it to the faculty advisor. (attached) Submit paper and journal and personal assessment to faculty sponsor. Plan on presenting your internship experience to your peers/an undergraduate business class during the current or upcoming semester.

4 Manhattan College Internships MBAE 601 MBA Program Academic Contract Grades will be determine by the following weights: 3 Progress Communications 15% Journal 15% Final Report/Paper 40% Employer Evaluation 15% Self Assessment 15% 1. PROGRESS COMMUNICATIONS-- Types and Dates: Students are expected to communicate with their faculty advisors at least three times. Faculty Sponsor: Please choose from: face-to-face- -blackboard-other. Specify dates and deliverables for each communication with the student. Mid-way through the internship, contact the onsite supervisor for a progress report. Onsite supervisor will be asked to complete a midterm evaluation of student performance. 2. JOURNAL Students are expected to keep a weekly journal outlining their duties and reflecting on progress and developments for the duration of the internship. Faculty Sponsor: Please highlight specific requirements.

FINAL REPORT/PAPER Students are expected to complete at least a ten-page final report/paper Elements may include: Company/Industry description Key issues or concepts related to field Quantitative or qualitative questions and analysis Review of processes Assessments and observations Organizational structure Competitive position The final report should be presented in a professional business report. The report should incorporate the students experiences on the job. The following guidelines apply to the final report: All pages must be computer generated. All pages should be consecutively numbered and the report should contain a table of contents. All sections and sub-sections should be clearly marked with headings. All supporting material should be placed in an appendix. These appendices must be clearly labeled and the information in each appendix should be referenced within the body of the final report. A bibliography should be included listing all information sources consulted, including individuals with whom you have spoken or interviewed. 6 4. PERSONAL ASSESSMENT. Students must complete a two-page personal assessment. This is a crucial part of the learning experience. It offers the opportunity to reflect on the entire internship experience and think about both the positive and negative aspects of your internship. The assessment should address the following questions and issues: To what extent have you learned new disciplines for learning and managing your time? Have your career goals been reinforced or have you decided to alter your original goals? What new skills have you acquired and what present skills have been reinforced? Consider the full range of skills: leadership; technical; communication; artistic; social; political and others? What specific techniques from your coursework have you learned which will improve your interpersonal skills? How will these improve your ability to be a successful manager? How could your internship experience have been more beneficial? What were the most positive and negative aspects of your experience? What suggestions would you make for improving this internship experience? Faculty Sponsor: Please specify due date, topic, and scope. 5. PERFORMANCE EVALUATION Your onsite supervisor should complete an Employer Evaluation of Student Intern form and send it to your faculty supervisor.
